Chapter 5: The Ghost of the Forest
Chapter 5: The Ghost of the Forest
The rumors had been swirling around the village for weeks, whispered among the villagers as they went about their daily tasks. Some spoke of eerie sounds in the night, while others swore they had seen a ghostly figure gliding through the forest at the edge of Yellowstone. Most of the villagers avoided the forest altogether, too frightened by the stories to venture near.
But for Allira, the tales were nothing more than superstition.
"I can't believe everyone is afraid of some ghost story," Allira muttered as she and Ben worked to repair the roof of a neighbor's cottage. She handed him a fresh bundle of straw, her brows furrowed in frustration. "The forest is just a bunch of trees, and ghosts aren't real."
Ben, balancing on the roof, chuckled as he took the bundle from her. "And here I thought you’d be curious. You’re the bravest person I know. Are you sure you’re not just a little interested in finding out what’s causing all the fuss?"
Allira snorted, placing her hands on her hips.
"Oh, I'm curious all right. I'm curious why everyone's too scared to even step foot in the woods. If you ask me, it's probably just some trickster playing pranks."
Ben finished laying down the straw and climbed down the ladder, dusting his hands. "Well, it wouldn't hurt to check it out. Maybe there's something—or someone—behind it."
Allira shot him a sideways glance.
"You really want to go ghost hunting, don’t you?"
Ben grinned.
"Why not? It could be fun. Besides, what else are we going to do tonight? Sit around and listen to more stories about it?"
She sighed, shaking her head.
"Fine. We'll check it out. But if it turns out to be some ridiculous prank, you're chopping firewood for a week."
---
Later that evening, after the sun had set and the village had grown quiet, Allira and Ben found themselves at the edge of the forest. The trees stood tall and ominous, their branches swaying gently in the evening breeze. The moonlight filtered through the canopy, casting long shadows across the ground.
"Still not scared?" Ben teased as they stepped into the woods, the underbrush crunching beneath their feet.
"Not even a little," Allira replied, her voice steady but her eyes scanning the trees. "But I’m more worried about you. If something jumps out at us, I hope you don’t faint."
Ben laughed, adjusting the small lantern he carried. "I think I’ll manage. Though if it really is a ghost, you might have to save me."
They walked deeper into the forest, the village behind them slowly disappearing from view. The further they went, the quieter it became, until all they could hear was the rustle of leaves and the occasional hoot of an owl.
Despite her outward bravado, Allira couldn’t help but feel a slight chill creeping up her spine. Something about the forest felt different tonight, like they were being watched.
"So, what’s the plan if we actually find this ghost?" Ben asked after a long stretch of silence. "Are we going to ask it for a friendly chat?"
Allira smirked, keeping her voice low. "If we find anything, I’m leaving the talking to you. You’re the one who wanted to come out here, remember?"
Ben opened his mouth to respond, but before he could say anything, a strange sound echoed through the trees—a faint, distant wail that sent shivers down both of their spines.
Allira froze, her hand instinctively reaching for the small dagger she carried at her belt.
"Did you hear that?" she whispered.
Ben nodded, his expression serious.
"Yeah. And it didn’t sound like an owl."
They exchanged a glance before continuing forward, their steps slower and more cautious now. The wail came again, louder this time, and closer. It sounded like the mournful cry of someone in deep sorrow, echoing through the woods like a phantom’s lament.
Suddenly, a pale, ghostly figure appeared in the distance, barely visible through the trees. It glided silently, its form shimmering in the moonlight. Allira and Ben stopped in their tracks, eyes wide.
“There… there it is,” Ben whispered, his voice barely audible.
Allira tightened her grip on her dagger, though she wasn’t sure what good it would do against a ghost. “Looks like the villagers weren’t exaggerating.”
The figure moved closer, its outline becoming clearer as it floated toward them. It was humanoid in shape, but its features were obscured, as if its face and body were made of mist. It didn’t seem to notice them at first, but as they stood there, frozen in place, the figure paused, turning its head toward them.
Ben took a cautious step forward. "Hello?" he called out, his voice trembling slightly. "Can you hear us?"
The ghost stopped moving and slowly turned to face them. As it did, the wailing ceased, replaced by a haunting silence.
“Who disturbs the forest?” a voice echoed through the trees, soft but filled with ancient power.
Ben swallowed nervously. "We—we’re from the village of Yellowstone. We’ve heard stories about you and came to see for ourselves."
The ghost hovered in place, its form rippling like a disturbed pond. "I have no quarrel with the living. Leave this place."
Allira stepped forward, her curiosity outweighing her fear. “Wait. Who are you? What happened to you?”
The ghost remained silent for a moment before answering, its voice heavy with sorrow. “I was once a protector of this land… a wizard of great power. But I was betrayed by those I trusted. My spirit now wanders, bound to these woods by a curse.”
Ben’s eyes widened. “A wizard? You were a wizard?”
The ghost’s form flickered, as if the memory pained it. “Yes. Long ago, I served the kingdom of Yellowstone, defending it from evil forces. But those who feared my power conspired against me, and I was struck down. My body may be gone, but my spirit remains, unable to find peace.”
Allira frowned. “So you’re not here to harm anyone?”
The ghost shook its head slowly. “No. I am bound to these woods, but I mean no harm to the villagers. I only seek to guard this land as I once did… though I am but a shadow of what I was.”
Ben glanced at Allira, then back at the ghost. “Is there any way we can help you?”
The ghost seemed to consider his words for a long moment. “Perhaps. The curse that binds me to this place was cast by a dark sorcerer. If you can find the source of the curse and destroy it, I may be free.”
Allira raised an eyebrow. “And where exactly would we find this sorcerer?”
The ghost’s form flickered again, and its voice grew faint. “The sorcerer… has long since perished. But his dark magic lingers in an ancient relic… hidden deep within the mountains to the north. If you seek it, be warned—the path is treacherous, and many have perished in search of it.”
Ben and Allira exchanged a look. It was a dangerous quest, but it was clear that this spirit wasn’t the malevolent force the villagers feared.
“All right,” Allira said, her voice firm. “We’ll help you. We’ll find the relic and break the curse.”
The ghost bowed its head slightly. “Thank you. But be wary… dark forces still guard the relic, and they will not let it go easily.”
With that, the ghost began to fade, its form dissolving into the night air. Before it disappeared completely, it spoke one last time.
“May the light guide you… brave souls.”
And then it was gone.
---
For a long moment, Ben and Allira stood in silence, staring at the spot where the ghost had vanished. The forest seemed quieter now, as if the presence of the spirit had subdued the usual sounds of the night.
“Well,” Ben said, breaking the silence, “that was… unexpected.”
Allira let out a slow breath, shaking her head.
“I’ll say. Looks like we’ve got ourselves a new mission.”
Ben grinned, the excitement of the adventure sparking in his eyes. “You know, I never would’ve guessed we’d be ghost hunters. But I kind of like it.”
Allira shot him a smirk. “Just don’t let it go to your head. We’ve got a long journey ahead of us.”
As they turned to leave the forest and head back to the village, Ben couldn’t help but feel a sense of purpose stirring within him. This quest, dangerous as it was, felt like something he was meant to do—like a piece of the puzzle was finally falling into place.
Allira, on the other hand, was already calculating their next move. The path ahead would be perilous, but for the first time in a long time, she felt a strange excitement brewing. There was more to this world than she had ever imagined, and she was ready to face whatever lay ahead.
Together, they walked back toward the village, their minds buzzing with the possibilities of what they might discover.Download Novelah App
