Chapter 9: The Search for Allies The air in Yellowstone was heavy with the aftermath of the battle. Smoke rose from the ruins of homes, and the cries of the injured echoed across the village. Despite their hard-earned victory, the reality of the situation weighed heavily on everyone’s hearts. They had repelled King Cole’s forces for now, but they all knew it was only a matter of time before he returned with even greater strength. Ben and Allira stood at the village center, where Elder Ardin leaned on his staff, his face grim. "We cannot survive another assault like that," he said, his voice filled with resignation. "King Cole will not stop until all of Yellowstone is under his control." Ben glanced at the horizon, where dark clouds gathered like a promise of more danger. "We need more help. Allies who can stand against Cole’s army, and more importantly, his wizards." Allira nodded, her expression determined. "We’ve heard of other kingdoms, other forces out there that have the power to fight back. We just need to find them." Elder Ardin nodded, though there was a flicker of doubt in his eyes. "There are those who could help, but they are not easily swayed. You’ll have to travel far and wide, and face many dangers to rally them." Ben and Allira exchanged a glance, both knowing this journey would be fraught with peril. But they had no other choice. "We’ll do whatever it takes," Ben said firmly. "We can’t let King Cole conquer any more lands." "Then you must start with the most powerful ally you can find," Elder Ardin said, his voice low. "There is a witch who lives in the Floating Citadel. Her name is Erathis, and her power is said to rival that of King Cole’s wizards. If she agrees to join you, her magic could turn the tide of this war." "The Floating Citadel?" Allira raised an eyebrow. "Sounds a bit… unsteady." Elder Ardin gave a dry chuckle. "It is far more dangerous than it sounds. The citadel is suspended in the sky, surrounded by shifting clouds that distort reality. Many have tried to reach it, but few have returned." Ben’s eyes narrowed. "We’ll reach her. We have to." --- The journey to the Floating Citadel was long and arduous. Ben and Allira trekked across rolling hills, through dense forests, and over rocky cliffs. The further they traveled from Yellowstone, the more dangerous the terrain became. But despite the hardships, their determination never wavered. One evening, as they camped under a starless sky, Allira poked at the fire with a stick, her brow furrowed in thought. "You think this witch will help us? What if she’s as dangerous as Cole’s wizards?" Ben looked at her, his expression thoughtful. "She might be. But we don’t have many options. If we don’t find someone powerful enough to fight back, Cole will crush us all." Allira sighed, leaning back against a rock. "I just hope we’re not walking into a trap. I don’t like the sound of ‘shifting clouds’ and ‘distorted reality.’ Sounds like a bad dream waiting to happen." Ben smirked. "When have we ever had it easy?" "Good point," Allira replied, giving him a half-smile. "Let’s just hope this witch doesn’t turn us into frogs or something." The next morning, they reached the edge of a vast valley, and there, floating above it, was the Citadel. It was a massive structure made of dark stone, with towers that spiraled into the sky. The citadel hovered in place, suspended by invisible forces, and surrounded by thick, swirling clouds that shimmered in the light. The clouds twisted and shifted constantly, as if the very air around the citadel was alive. "That’s… unnerving," Allira muttered, staring up at the impossible sight. Ben nodded, his hand tightening around the hilt of his sword. "We’ll have to go through it. There’s no other way." --- As they approached the base of the citadel, the clouds seemed to reach out toward them, swirling in strange patterns that played tricks on their eyes. Allira blinked, trying to focus, but the world around her twisted, making the ground beneath her feet feel unstable. "I don’t like this," she muttered, glancing at Ben. "It’s like the world’s shifting every second." Ben’s expression was grim. "We just have to keep moving. Keep your eyes on the citadel." They began the ascent up the winding stairway that led toward the floating fortress. But the stairway was unlike any they had ever seen. Each step seemed to stretch or shrink, as if the very fabric of reality was bending around them. At times, the stairs disappeared altogether, only to reappear in a different place, forcing them to leap from one section to the next. "Watch your step!" Ben called out as he narrowly avoided falling into a gap that had appeared beneath his feet. "I’m trying!" Allira shot back, her heart racing. "This place is messing with my head." The stairway grew more treacherous the higher they climbed. Strange illusions appeared around them—visions of people they knew, long-lost memories, and even nightmares made real. At one point, Allira saw a vision of her village burning, with her family trapped inside. "No!" she cried, reaching out instinctively, but her hand passed through the vision as if it were smoke. "Don’t trust anything you see," Ben said, his voice steady despite the chaos around them. "It’s all illusions. Focus on what’s real." Allira nodded, shaking off the lingering fear. "Right. Just keep going." They pressed on, fighting through the illusions and the disorienting magic. The higher they climbed, the more intense the distortions became. At one point, the stairway twisted upside down, forcing them to walk on the underside of the steps, their minds struggling to comprehend the impossible angles. "This is insane," Allira muttered as they carefully navigated the inverted steps. "Are we even going the right way?" Ben glanced around, his expression uncertain. "I think so. But everything keeps shifting… it’s hard to tell." Suddenly, a deep voice echoed through the air, filled with both power and amusement. "You seek an audience with Erathis, do you?" Ben and Allira froze, glancing around for the source of the voice. "Who’s there?" Ben called out, his hand on his sword. The clouds shifted, and a figure appeared before them, standing on one of the floating platforms. It was a tall, regal woman with long silver hair and eyes that glowed with an ethereal light. Her robes billowed around her, blending into the swirling clouds. "I am Erathis, the keeper of this citadel," the woman said, her voice echoing through the air. "You have braved my illusions and come far to seek me. But why should I help you?" Allira stepped forward, her gaze meeting Erathis’s glowing eyes. "We need your power to stop King Cole. He’s destroying everything—our homes, our people. We can’t fight his wizards alone." Erathis tilted her head, her expression unreadable. "And what makes you think I care about your struggles?" Ben stepped up beside Allira, his voice steady. "Because if Cole isn’t stopped, he’ll come for you next. He’ll take your power, just like he’s taken everything else." For a moment, there was silence. Erathis studied them, her eyes narrowing as if weighing their words. "Perhaps," she said softly. "But you must prove yourselves worthy of my aid. Survive my trials, and I will consider your request." With a wave of her hand, the world around them shifted once more, and they found themselves standing in the middle of a vast, glowing arena, surrounded by the swirling clouds. "Let the trial begin," Erathis said, her voice fading into the wind.
