Chapter 10: Trials of the Citadel
Chapter 10: Trials of the Citadel
The arena in which Ben and Allira found themselves was unlike anything they had ever seen. The swirling clouds above them cast strange shadows on the ground, which seemed to shift and ripple like water. The walls of the arena were made of towering stone columns that rose into the sky, disappearing into the fog.
Ben’s hand tightened on the hilt of his sword, while Allira stood close by, her senses on high alert. They had no idea what kind of trial awaited them, but they knew it wouldn’t be easy.
Erathis’s voice echoed around them, cold and impassive. “If you are to earn my aid, you must prove your strength, your cunning, and your loyalty to each other. Only then will you be worthy of my magic.”
Allira glanced at Ben. “No pressure, huh?”
Ben smirked, though there was tension in his eyes. “We’ve gotten through worse. We’ll make it.”
Without warning, the ground beneath them rumbled, and a series of massive stone platforms rose from the ground. They formed a spiraling staircase that led into the sky, each step uneven and jagged.
Ben looked up, frowning. “I guess we’re supposed to climb.”
Allira sighed. “This is going to be fun,” she muttered sarcastically, already feeling her muscles tense at the thought of the climb.
They began their ascent, carefully navigating the unstable platforms. Each step felt as if it might crumble beneath their feet, and the swirling clouds around them made it difficult to see what lay ahead. The higher they climbed, the more intense the wind became, whipping at their clothes and making it hard to keep their balance.
At one point, a sudden gust of wind nearly knocked Allira off her feet. She stumbled, grabbing onto Ben’s arm for support.
“Careful,” Ben said, steadying her.
“Yeah, thanks,” she muttered, her heart racing from the close call.
As they climbed higher, strange figures began to appear in the clouds—shadows of warriors long past, their ghostly forms flickering in and out of existence. They wielded ethereal weapons and stared down at Ben and Allira with cold, empty eyes.
“They don’t look friendly,” Allira remarked, eyeing the specters warily.
“No, they don’t,” Ben agreed, drawing his sword as one of the ghostly warriors floated closer.
The spectral warrior raised a translucent sword, and with a sudden burst of speed, it lunged at Ben. He parried the blow, the force of the strike sending vibrations up his arm. The ghost was strong—stronger than its ethereal form suggested.
“Allira, watch out!” Ben called as another ghost appeared behind her.
Allira spun around, her heart racing as she narrowly dodged the spectral blade. She grabbed a nearby rock and threw it at the ghost, but it passed right through, doing nothing to stop the creature.
“These things don’t stay down!” Allira shouted, ducking another swing.
Ben gritted his teeth, deflecting another blow from the ghost attacking him. “We need to figure out what they’re weak to!”
Just as they were being overwhelmed by the relentless attacks of the spectral warriors, the clouds above them shifted, and a beam of light broke through the fog. The light struck one of the ghosts, and it let out a bone-chilling wail before dissolving into nothingness.
“The light!” Allira exclaimed, realizing the solution. “We need to lure them into the light!”
Ben nodded, his eyes scanning the area for more beams of light. “We just need to survive long enough to do that.”
Working together, they maneuvered the ghostly warriors toward the beams of light that occasionally pierced through the clouds. Each time a ghost was touched by the light, it dissolved into nothingness, leaving behind only the echoes of its wails.
As the last of the ghosts vanished, Ben and Allira collapsed onto the nearest platform, breathing heavily. The trial had been grueling, but they had survived.
Erathis’s voice echoed once more. “You have passed the first trial. But strength alone is not enough. You must prove your cunning if you wish to survive what comes next.”
Allira groaned, sitting up. “Of course there’s more,” she muttered. “I knew this was too easy.”
Ben offered her a hand, pulling her to her feet. “We’ve come this far. We can’t turn back now.”
Suddenly, the platform they were standing on began to shift, and the entire arena transformed around them. The columns and platforms melted away, replaced by a vast labyrinth of twisting corridors and dead ends. The walls were covered in strange, glowing symbols, and the air was thick with a sense of impending danger.
Allira glanced at Ben, her brow furrowing. “A maze? Really? How original.”
Ben chuckled despite the situation. “I’m sure it’s more complicated than it looks.”
The ground rumbled beneath their feet, and the walls of the maze began to shift, the corridors twisting and reshaping themselves before their eyes.
“Okay, never mind,” Allira said, her tone flat. “This is worse than I thought.”
Ben scanned their surroundings, trying to make sense of the maze. “We’ll have to figure out the pattern. These symbols on the walls—they might be clues.”
As they ventured deeper into the maze, they quickly realized that the glowing symbols on the walls were indeed key to navigating the shifting corridors. Each symbol represented a different element—fire, water, earth, and air—and depending on the sequence of symbols they touched, the walls would shift in different ways.
“We’re going in circles,” Allira muttered after what felt like hours of wandering through the maze. “This place is driving me crazy.”
Ben frowned, studying the symbols on the wall. “Wait. I think I’ve got it. The symbols correspond to the elements, right? So if we follow the order of the elements—earth, water, fire, air—it should lead us out.”
Allira raised an eyebrow. “You sure about that?”
Ben nodded. “It’s worth a shot.”
Following Ben’s theory, they began to touch the symbols in the correct order, and slowly but surely, the walls of the maze began to shift in their favor, opening up new pathways and guiding them toward the exit.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, they emerged from the maze, standing at the edge of a massive cliff that overlooked the swirling clouds below.
Erathis appeared before them once more, her expression unreadable. “You have passed the second trial,” she said. “But there is one more challenge you must face. Only then will you be worthy of my aid.”
Allira sighed, her patience wearing thin. “Of course there’s one more.”
Ben glanced at her, his eyes determined. “We can do this.”
Erathis waved her hand, and the world around them shifted once more. The final trial awaited.
The world around Ben and Allira shifted dramatically as Erathis conjured the final trial. They found themselves standing in a vast, shimmering chamber filled with a sea of glowing orbs that floated gently in midair, illuminating the space with a soft, ethereal light. Each orb pulsed with energy, casting vivid reflections across the walls, which were adorned with ancient runes.
“Welcome to the Chamber of Choices,” Erathis announced, her voice echoing through the chamber. “Here, you will face your greatest fears and desires. Only by confronting the truths within yourselves can you prove your worthiness to earn my aid.”
Allira glanced around, her heart pounding.
“Great. More mind games.”
Ben frowned, stepping closer to the floating orbs.
“What do we have to do?”
“The orbs represent different paths,” Erathis explained.
“Each of you must choose an orb that resonates with your deepest fear or desire. But beware: the visions you encounter will test your resolve. You must confront what lies within.”
Ben nodded, steeling himself. “We can handle it. Right, Allira?”
Allira hesitated, eyeing the orbs warily. “I guess we don’t have a choice.”
They moved closer to the floating orbs, each one glowing with a different hue. Ben reached out to touch one that shimmered with a golden light. As soon as his fingers brushed against it, the orb exploded in a flash of light, enveloping him in a brilliant glow.
“Ben!” Allira shouted, but before she could move, another orb beside her pulsed with a fiery red light, capturing her attention. She hesitated only for a moment before reaching out to touch it.
The moment her fingers made contact, the chamber dissolved around her, and she found herself standing in the familiar setting of her village. The sun shone brightly, and laughter filled the air as villagers went about their day. It was a scene of pure joy, but something felt off.
“Is this a trick?” she muttered, scanning the crowd for familiar faces. Just as she spotted her family near the village well, the atmosphere shifted. Dark shadows loomed over the scene, and the laughter faded into cries of terror.
“No! Not again!” Allira cried, her heart racing as she watched the shadows engulf her family, dragging them away into the darkness. “Stop! Let them go!”
As she lunged forward, the scene shifted again, and she was standing in a dark forest, the air thick with mist. Shadows darted between the trees, whispering her name. “Allira… Allira…”
“Leave me alone!” she yelled, gripping her head. “This isn’t real!”
But the shadows persisted, forming into dark figures that resembled the ghostly warriors from her previous trial. They advanced toward her, wielding menacing weapons.
“You cannot protect them,” one of the figures hissed. “You are weak. You will always lose them.”
“Shut up!” Allira shouted defiantly, trying to suppress the fear clawing at her heart. “I won’t let you take them from me!”
Suddenly, a beam of light pierced through the shadows, illuminating the figures. Allira blinked, recognizing the strength within her rising. “I’m not afraid of you!”
With that declaration, the shadows recoiled from the light, dissipating like mist in the sun. The warmth of the light surrounded her, filling her with confidence. She focused, channeling her determination into the light. “I will protect my family!”
As the shadows vanished, the scene shifted once more, and she found herself back in the Chamber of Choices, breathless but resolute.
Meanwhile, Ben found himself in a dark void, alone and disoriented. The golden light of the orb faded, leaving him surrounded by nothingness. “Hello?” he called out, his voice echoing into the abyss.
Suddenly, images began to swirl around him—memories from his past, moments of happiness and pain. He saw himself as a child, laughing with his father, King Adelio, and his mother, the late queen. But then the scene shifted, and he saw the moment he witnessed his father’s death, the horror and anguish etched on his face.
“No!” he shouted, clenching his fists. “This isn’t real!”
But the memories continued, dragging him deeper into despair. He saw his uncle Cole, the betrayal etched in every detail as he declared himself king. “You were weak, Adar. You always were. You will never reclaim what is rightfully yours.”
Ben shook his head, trying to dispel the images. “I’m not weak! I can fight!”
The darkness around him transformed, revealing his home in Bluerock. He stood before the throne room, where the crown lay abandoned, and the whispers of the kingdom echoed in his ears.
“You’ve lost everything,” a shadowy figure taunted. “You can’t save them now.”
“No!” Ben shouted, his voice filled with rage. “I won’t let you take my home!”
In a burst of determination, he focused on the memories that brought him strength—his bond with Allira, the villagers he had fought for, and the vision of reclaiming Bluerock. He summoned the golden light from the orb and let it fill him, pushing back against the darkness.
“I will rise again!” Ben declared, and the void erupted into light, shattering the illusions surrounding him.
As the brightness faded, Ben and Allira found themselves back in the Chamber of Choices, panting but filled with a newfound sense of strength. They exchanged a look, recognizing that they had both faced their fears and emerged victorious.
“Well, that was intense,” Allira said, shaking slightly.
Ben nodded, a relieved smile breaking through his earlier tension. “Yeah, but we made it.”
Erathis appeared before them, her expression inscrutable. “You have both faced the trials and proven your strength, cunning, and loyalty. You have shown that you are worthy of my aid.”
“What does that mean for us?” Allira asked, her eyes shining with hope.
Erathis raised her hand, and the glowing orbs began to swirl around her, forming a radiant halo of light. “I will lend you my power, but it will not come without a price. You must be willing to stand united in the face of darkness. Together, you will be stronger than you are alone.”
Ben and Allira exchanged glances, determination burning in their hearts. “We’ll stand together,” Ben said firmly. “No matter what comes next.”
Erathis nodded, her gaze piercing. “Then let it be so. I grant you the power of the elements and the wisdom of the ancients. Use it wisely.”
With a wave of her hand, the air around them shimmered, and they felt a surge of energy course through them, igniting their spirits.
As the light enveloped them, Allira felt a deep connection to the earth, a sense of grounding. Ben felt the air around him crackling with energy, empowering him with swiftness and strength.
“Thank you, Erathis,” Allira said, her voice steady. “We won’t let you down.”
Erathis smiled, a rare warmth spreading across her features. “Remember, the true power lies within your hearts. Use it to protect your people and fight against King Cole’s tyranny.”
With a final wave, Erathis faded into the light, leaving Ben and Allira standing together in the chamber, their resolve stronger than ever.
With their newfound powers and the knowledge that they would not face King Cole alone, Ben and Allira descended from the Floating Citadel, determined to rally the allies they needed to reclaim Bluerock and protect Yellowstone.
As they made their way back through the shifting clouds, Allira turned to Ben, her eyes filled with determination.
“Let’s gather our allies and prepare for the fight. We need to show King Cole that we’re not afraid.”
Ben nodded, a fierce smile on his face.
“Together, we’ll make him pay for what he’s done.”
With renewed hope and strength coursing through them, they set out on the path ahead, ready to face whatever challenges awaited them in their quest to restore peace to their kingdoms.
