Chapter 15: Disguised as Dark Followers
Chapter 15: Disguised as Dark Followers
The night was eerily quiet as Allira and Ben stood at the edge of the shadowy clearing. In the distance, the towering spire of Marcio’s dark fortress loomed, its jagged peaks shrouded in black mist. The two of them, now donned in cloaks of dark, tattered fabric, blended into the shadows. Their mission was clear: infiltrate the secret gathering of Marcio’s followers and steal the magical artifact that King Cole’s head wizard used to control the dark forces.
Ben adjusted the hood of his cloak, his face hidden in the shadow it cast.
"Are you sure about this, Allira? One wrong move, and we’ll be facing a room full of dark wizards."
Allira smirked, her eyes glittering with determination.
"I know. But it’s our only shot. Without that artifact, we’ll never be able to break the spell holding half of Yellowstone’s army captive. We have to stop Marcio from getting stronger."
Ben gave a grim nod, adjusting the sword at his side.
"Just... try to keep your grumpiness in check. These people will smell fear, but they might also smell attitude."
She rolled her eyes and shoved him lightly.
"I’ll be on my best behavior, Ben. I can play the part of a devoted follower when I need to."
Ben chuckled softly.
"Let’s hope that’s true."
As they walked through the darkened forest towards the fortress, the tension between them built. Each step took them deeper into enemy territory, and the eerie glow of the black spire seemed to pulse with dark energy.
They approached the entrance, where two grim-looking guards—members of Marcio’s loyal order—stood watch. Their eyes glowed with faint, magical fire, a sign of their enchantment. Allira tightened her grip on the leather-bound satchel at her side, which held their only tools: a few enchanted herbs and a blade blessed by Erathis, the witch they had recently allied with.
"Keep your head down," Ben whispered as they approached the guards.
Allira nodded, pulling her hood further over her face.
"State your business," one of the guards demanded, his deep voice rumbling with suspicion.
Ben stepped forward, speaking in the cold, detached tone he had practiced.
"We are here for the gathering. Marcio summoned all of his loyal followers for the ceremony."
The guard narrowed his glowing eyes, scrutinizing them. Allira’s heart pounded in her chest, but she kept her face calm. She noticed the guard’s hand inching toward the hilt of his sword, and for a moment, fear threatened to creep in.
"Prove it," the guard finally growled, crossing his arms.
Without missing a beat, Ben reached into his cloak and pulled out a small medallion they had acquired from one of the lesser wizards they had defeated earlier. He held it up, and the guard’s glowing eyes flickered, clearly recognizing the symbol.
"Ah," the guard muttered, his posture relaxing slightly.
"You’re late. The others are already inside."
Ben dipped his head respectfully.
"The road was treacherous, but we’re here now."
The guard grunted and stepped aside, allowing them to pass through the heavy iron doors.
Inside, the fortress was even darker and more foreboding. Narrow corridors twisted like a maze, lined with torches that burned with a sickly green flame. The walls were adorned with arcane symbols that seemed to shift and shimmer as they passed.
"Keep your eyes open," Allira whispered, her hand brushing against Ben’s as they walked. "We need to find that artifact before Marcio gets suspicious."
They entered a large chamber, where a group of Marcio’s dark followers had already gathered. The room was filled with the low hum of conversation, the air thick with the scent of incense and dark magic. In the center of the chamber was an altar, upon which sat the artifact they sought—a black, jagged crystal pulsating with malevolent energy.
"That’s it," Ben whispered, his eyes locked on the crystal.
"Yeah, no kidding," Allira muttered, trying not to stare too long and attract attention.
They kept their heads low as they moved through the room, mingling with the crowd. Every now and then, one of the wizards would cast a suspicious glance their way, but so far, no one seemed to recognize them as impostors.
At the far end of the chamber, Marcio himself appeared, his long, flowing black robes trailing behind him. His presence commanded the room instantly, and the murmurs of conversation quieted.
"Brothers and sisters," Marcio’s voice echoed through the chamber, low and serpentine, "the time has come to solidify our power. With this artifact, we will not only ensure King Cole’s dominance, but we will bend the very forces of nature to our will."
The followers around them nodded in reverence, their eyes fixated on Marcio as he approached the altar.
"Now," Marcio continued, "the ceremony shall begin. Prepare yourselves to witness true power."
Ben leaned toward Allira, his voice barely a whisper. "This is our chance. We need to act fast before the ritual begins."
Allira nodded. "I’ll distract them. You grab the crystal."
Before Ben could protest, Allira straightened her back and stepped forward, drawing attention to herself. "Wait!" she called out, her voice carrying through the room.
All eyes turned to her, including Marcio’s.
Ben’s heart raced as he watched her, but he knew this was their only chance.
Marcio’s cold, calculating eyes narrowed at her sudden interruption. "Who speaks?"
Allira stepped forward with confidence, raising her chin. "I have a concern. I’ve traveled far to witness this moment of power, but I wonder—are we truly ready? What if we fail? What if we’re not strong enough?"
The room fell silent, and the tension was palpable. Ben, taking advantage of the distraction, carefully edged his way closer to the altar.
Marcio’s lips curled into a sneer. "Doubt has no place here, follower. Do you question my power?"
Allira shook her head quickly, her heart pounding. "No, Master Marcio. I only seek to strengthen us. What if... we need a second ritual? Something to ensure victory?"
Marcio stepped down from the altar, his black robes trailing behind him as he walked towards her. "You speak with fear, not strength."
Ben, meanwhile, had reached the altar. His hand hovered over the crystal, waiting for the perfect moment to snatch it. He glanced at Allira, who was keeping Marcio’s attention focused on her.
"Fear?" Allira scoffed, trying to mask her nerves with a sharp tone. "I only fear that King Cole’s enemies will not cower in the face of mere displays of magic. We need power that will break their will entirely!"
Marcio seemed intrigued by her boldness, his cold eyes watching her closely. "And what do you suggest?"
Ben seized the moment. In one swift motion, he grabbed the crystal and slipped it into his satchel. The dark energy pulsed through him briefly, sending a shiver down his spine, but he didn’t stop. He quickly backed away from the altar, disappearing into the crowd.
Allira, seeing Ben had succeeded, bowed her head. "I only serve to bring us more power. I live to serve you, Master Marcio."
Marcio, still suspicious but appeased for the moment, waved a dismissive hand. "Enough talk. You’ll see power soon enough."
Allira bowed her head lower, then carefully backed into the crowd, making her way toward Ben.
Once they were side by side, Ben leaned toward her, whispering, "Got it. Let’s get out of here."
They moved swiftly toward the exit, trying to blend in with the crowd. As they neared the door, one of the followers turned to them, his eyes narrowing. "I don’t recognize you two. Who are you?"
Ben tensed, his hand inching toward his sword. But Allira, quick on her feet, grabbed the goblet of dark wine from the follower’s hand and took a long drink.
"New recruits," she said with a smirk, wiping her mouth. "From the southern coven."
The follower grunted, unimpressed, but let them pass.
They slipped out of the chamber and down the winding halls of the fortress. Once they were safely outside, Ben let out a breath he didn’t realize he had been holding.
"You’re insane," he said, half laughing, half exasperated.
Allira grinned, still flushed with adrenaline. "And you love it."
Ben shook his head, smiling. "Let’s just hope we’re not followed."
And with that, they disappeared into the night, the powerful artifact now in their possession.Download Novelah App
