Chapter 18: The Return of Memories

Chapter 18: The Return of Memories
The sun had barely begun to rise over Yellowstone as Allira and Ben made their way back into the village, the first rays casting a warm glow on the trees and fields. Their journey had been long and filled with danger, but they returned triumphant, with powerful allies at their side. The witches, wizards, and even the Fire Serpent had pledged their loyalty in the fight against King Cole.
In the village square, a crowd had already gathered—peasants, farmers, and villagers who had heard the tales of Allira and Ben’s bravery. The tension in the air was thick, as whispers of war and King Cole’s tyranny had reached even this peaceful land. But when the villagers saw Allira and Ben approaching, flanked by their newfound allies, hope flickered in their eyes.
Allira stepped forward, her voice carrying over the anxious murmurs of the crowd.
"We’ve returned with those who will help us fight! Together, we can stand against King Cole and his forces. But we need every able hand to join us. This isn’t just about defending our village—it’s about protecting everything we hold dear."
A silence fell over the crowd, followed by a surge of cheers. The villagers, inspired by the courage of Allira and Ben, began to step forward one by one. Men and women, young and old, volunteered to join the cause. Their fear gave way to determination.
Ben watched as the peasants rallied, but something weighed heavily on his heart. Even surrounded by allies, a nagging feeling of unease had followed him since their last battle. The flashes of memory he couldn’t quite grasp still haunted him, like pieces of a puzzle just out of reach.
He turned to Allira, his expression thoughtful.
"This fight... it's bigger than we ever imagined. With all the people joining us, I can’t help but feel like there’s something I’m missing."
Allira, ever grumpy yet steadfast, gave him a sidelong glance.
"You’ve been spacing out more than usual lately. But we’ve got a war to prepare for. I don’t have time to worry about what’s going on in that head of yours."
Despite her words, there was a soft undertone of concern in her voice. Over the past months, their bond had grown deep, and she’d come to care for him more than she would ever admit.
Before Ben could respond, the sound of approaching footsteps interrupted their conversation. Erathis, the powerful witch from the floating citadel, and the council of wizards emerged from the crowd, their presence commanding the attention of all.
"We must move swiftly," Erathis said in her rich, melodic voice.
"King Cole’s forces will not wait long before they march on Yellowstone. We have enchanted the village’s perimeter for protection, but it won’t hold if his wizards breach the boundary."
Ben nodded, trying to push the nagging feeling out of his mind. "We’ll need every able fighter ready. Our allies—the Fire Serpent and the witches—can hold off the wizards, but we’ll have to face Cole’s knights ourselves."
As they strategized, Ben felt a sharp pain in his head. He winced, pressing his fingers to his temple.
"Ben?" Allira asked, noticing his discomfort. "You all right?"
"I’m fine," Ben muttered, but the pain intensified. It was as if something was clawing at the edges of his mind, trying to break through. And then, all at once, his vision went black.

When Ben opened his eyes, he was no longer standing in the village square. Instead, he was back in Bluerock—on that fateful night. The sounds of swords clashing and the screams of soldiers echoed around him. The once-peaceful kingdom was in chaos. And there, in the midst of it all, he saw his father, King Adelio, fighting valiantly against the rebel forces led by Cole.
"No," Ben whispered, his heart pounding as the memory unfolded before him.
He watched, helpless, as Cole’s blade struck his father down. King Adelio fell to the ground, blood staining his royal robes, and Ben—Prince Adar—stood frozen, unable to save him. The weight of that moment, the grief and guilt, came crashing back like a tidal wave. He remembered everything. His true name. His royal lineage. His mission.
"Father!" Adar screamed, but the memory continued to play out as it had before, with his uncle’s cruel laughter ringing in his ears.
With a start, Adar jolted back to reality, gasping for air. His heart raced as he processed the flood of memories that had returned. He was no longer just Ben, the peasant. He was Prince Adar of Bluerock, heir to the throne, and the man who had watched his father die.
Allira’s concerned face came into focus. She was kneeling beside him, shaking his shoulders.
"Ben! What happened? You passed out."
Adar slowly sat up, his head still spinning. "I... I remember," he whispered, his voice hoarse.
"Remember what?" Allira asked, her eyes narrowing.
He turned to her, his gaze intense. "My name isn’t Ben. It’s Adar. I’m the prince of Bluerock."
Allira blinked, her brow furrowing in confusion. "What are you talking about? You’re Ben, the guy I found half-dead in a swamp. You’ve been with us for months. We’ve been through everything together."
"I know," Adar said softly, his voice filled with regret. "But I didn’t know who I was. I had lost my memory when you found me. But now it’s back—all of it. My father was King Adelio, the ruler of Bluerock. And I watched him die at the hands of my uncle, Cole."
Allira’s eyes widened in shock. "Wait, you’re saying... you’re the prince? The rightful heir to the throne?"
Adar nodded, his heart heavy. "Yes. And I failed him. I couldn’t protect my father. That’s why Cole took the throne, and that’s why he’s spreading his reign of terror."
For a moment, there was silence between them. Allira’s mind raced as she processed the revelation. The man she had come to care for—the man she had shared laughs, battles, and quiet moments with—was the prince of a fallen kingdom. A prince who had lost everything, including his identity.
"You’re serious," she finally said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"I wish I wasn’t," Adar replied, his eyes filled with sorrow. "But it’s true. And now, more than ever, I have to stop Cole. Not just for Bluerock, but for every kingdom he’s destroyed."
Allira looked away, her emotions a whirlwind. This changed everything. Their mission, their fight—it wasn’t just about saving Yellowstone or the other kingdoms. It was about reclaiming a throne, righting the wrongs of the past. And it was about Adar’s destiny.
She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "So, you’re a prince," she said, her voice a little shaky. "And here I’ve been bossing you around like some common peasant."
Adar chuckled, the sound surprising even himself. "I didn’t mind. In fact, I kind of liked it."
Allira shot him a look, half-annoyed, half-amused. "Well, don’t think you’re getting any special treatment now just because you’re royalty. You’re still Ben to me. Or should I say Prince Ben?"
Adar smiled, a bittersweet expression. "Adar is fine. But I’ll always be grateful to you, Allira. You saved me when I had nothing—when I didn’t even know who I was. You gave me a new life, and I’ll never forget that."
Allira’s tough exterior softened for a moment as she met his gaze. "You better not, Your Highness."
They both laughed, but the weight of the revelation still hung between them. Their journey had always been dangerous, but now it had taken on new significance. They weren’t just fighting for survival—they were fighting for Adar’s kingdom, for justice, and for redemption.
Adar reached out and took Allira’s hand, his grip firm yet gentle. "We’ll do this together. We’ll take down Cole and end his reign of terror."
Allira squeezed his hand in return, her resolve strengthening. "Damn right we will. And I’ll make sure you get your throne back—even if I have to drag you there myself."
With their bond stronger than ever, they rose to their feet, ready to face the battle ahead. The journey had become personal, not just for Adar, but for Allira as well. Together, they would fight for the future of Bluerock—and for the love that had grown between them amidst the chaos.
