Chapter 97 The Heavy Truth

Nora's POV
“It's not what you think.” He breathed.
“What do I think, Damon?” I asked, folding my arms.
He sighed. “You think I slept with Sasha.”
“Did you?”
Please say no. I mentally begged him. Please tell me how wrong I was.
He exhaled, his shoulders sagging with defeat. “I don't know.”
“What do you mean by that?”
He shrugged, his voice breaking as he spoke. “I don't really know. I hope I didn't.” Then he proceeded to tell me the most unbelievable story ever.
And I smiled. That was indeed what Sasha would have done.
What a despicable woman.
What a fox.
Damon exhaled beside me, his relief evident in the way his sigh was long and drawn. “You believe me?”
I nodded, a smile dancing in my eyes. “Of course, I do. You are my man. What am I doing if I don't trust you?”
“I'm your man?” He breathed, his voice filled with wonder.
I rolled my eyes at how cute he looked. “Didn't you hear me say something else, like how I trust you?”
He snorted as if the words weren't of utmost importance as the ones he wanted to confirm. “I'm your man?”
I rolled my eyes again, smiling widely. “Yes, you are.”
The next thing I knew, I was in his arms. He pulled me tight against his chest and crushed me so bad with his arms around me that I struggled to breathe.
I didn't complain though, my lips spreading wider in a cute smile. If this was the way I was going under, I didn't mind. Not one bit. If death came knocking for me in Damon's arms, I wouldn't argue because it was the perfect grave for me. I rolled my eyes at how ridiculous I was. Why would I think that?
I didn't want to lose Damon and neither did I want him to Iose me. I wanted to be with him as much as I could.
His tears brought me out the delusion I was fooling myself with. I pulled back from the embrace, grateful that I could breathe normally again but wondering what was wrong.
“What happened?” I asked, tracing my fingers on each cheek and touching his tears gently as if they were falling diamonds.
He pulled me back into an embrace, this one not as fierce as the previous one. “You have no idea how terrified I had been.” He cried.
“Why?”
“I was worried you would curse me out for what happened with Sasha. I was so scared that you would leave me that I couldn't think straight.”
“Why would I do such?” I chuckled, hoping to relieve his fears with how I didn't take the situation seriously. “I know what Sasha is like. Remember she is the reason I'm here. I knew something was going on or about to go down when you said you had no choice but to sleep at home instead of here with me. It had Sasha written all over it and it also screamed of her plotting something.” I smiled at him. “Why would I let her have my man when I know how sly she can be?”
He smiled. “Say that again.”
“What?” I answered coyly, knowing what he was asking for but willing to make him work for it.
He groaned, catching on to what I was doing. “Don't make me sweat for it, my love.”
My heart soared. My eyes glowed. “Say that again.”
He shook his head, chuckling at me. “Not until you say what it is I want to hear first.”
I sighed and chuckled at how big of a politician he was. He had me there. I had to admit surrender.
“Damon,” I began, looking deep into his eyes. “You are my man and no one can change that. Not a piece of paper, not a scheming woman who looks like me, and definitely not criticizing words from people who have no idea of how much I feel for you or what you mean to me.”
He sucked in a breath, his eyes misting with tears as he listened to me. His chest rose up and swelled with pride. “You are my love, Nora.” He also confessed. “And it doesn't matter to me what anyone says, I will always choose you.”
I grinned, happier in that moment than I had ever been in my life. “That settles it.”
“Not yet.” He shook his head, an odd twinkle in his eyes.
I gasped as he pulled me forward and gave me the sweetest kiss ever. My toes curled as I wrapped my hands around his neck and pulled him closer, sucking on his lips as if they were nectar I had been starving for.
He pulled away and smiled at me. I let out a moan, protesting at his retreat.
He chuckled. “You are cute.”
I snorted. “More like wet for you.”
He sucked in a ragged breath. “I love you, Nora.”
It was my turn to lose my breath. I couldn't breathe again. I felt suspended in the air, dancing mentally in the glow of his confession.
“Damon,” I breathed, unable to say more than his name.
He smiled, his eyes fixed on me and not blinking. “I love you, Nora.” He said again, his voice clearer and bolder.
I jumped at him, pulled him closer and feasted on his lips with a passion that shocked me as well.
“I love you, Damon. I love you.” I breathed amidst kisses.
He chuckled at my reaction. “If I had known all along that this was how you were going to behave, I would have confessed sooner.”
“You should have.” I agreed, placing kisses all over him. “You should have put me out of my misery. I couldn't stop hoping and wondering if you liked me.”
He sighed. “I'm sorry it took me a while to admit my feelings.”
I nodded. “I understand. We have time to make up for the lost time.”
“And nothing says we can't start now.” He said and crushed his lips to mine.
I had no idea how long we kissed. We could have stayed like that, not minding that we were running out of breath if not for the intruder.
We heard someone clearing their throat and had to pull apart, breathless and blushing as we glanced at the doctor.
He had a huge grin on his face and a mischievous twinkle in his eyes. “This place starts with the letter ‘h’ but it's a hospital not a hotel, Mr. Bennett. Moreover, your wife needs rest for her body to heal.”
I blushed and looked away.
“I will see to it that she heals well.” Damon said, his voice husky.
If someone could turn redder than a tomato, I believed that was me at that moment. I knew exactly what Damon meant and with the way the doctor sounded when he addressed me again, I knew he also knew.
“Let's get you checked, Mrs. Bennett.” The doctor chuckled.
I couldn't bear to look at the doctor and looked away, shy as he checked my vitals. I felt he was taking too much of his time and wished that he would leave so I could go back to feasting on my man.
My man.
I loved the sound of that.
