Chapter 49
~Jacqueline’s POV~
I opened my eyes blearily. My eyelids felt heavy. I tilted my head to the side. I could see the people standing at the end of the door faintly. I partially could recognize Daisy because of her clothes. The other two seemed strange and unfamiliar.
I tried to sit up but couldn’t. I tried again but my body was too weak to move.
“Daisy.” I called softly.
Huh? That bleep sound familiar. I turned to the side and caught a glimpse of the vital sign monitor. I could see the screen partially.
“Oh, Jackie! You’re awake!” She said worriedly as she hurried to the bed.
Daisy sat beside me and stroked my hair. I could hear sniffing and awkwardly wiping the tears in her eyes. Tears equals crying, right?
“Wh-what happened? Why are you crying?” I asked curiously.
I looked forward and had my eyes at the doctor. Liam had leant against the wall close to the door, with his shoe touching the wall. His eyes met mine. He looked away and heaved annoyingly. He gabbled something as he put his foot down. He got hold of the handle and turned it. He slammed the door and left the room.
I had my eyes at him as he walked through the hall until he was out of sight. I furrowed my brow confusingly. Okay. What was going on?
“How are you doing?” The doctor asked calmly.
“I’m—.” I said as I attempted to sit up again.
“Please don’t.” Daisy said worriedly.
I flashed a glance at her and then, the doctor. I lay down. Daisy flashed a faint smile at me.
“Are you in some kind of pain?” The doctor asked me.
“Only a little.” I answered.
The memory of what had happened earlier became vivid in my mind. Shirley’s rage, the staircase, falling to the floor—my baby.
“What about my baby?” I asked eagerly.
“Jackie, calm—.” Daisy said coaxingly.
“My baby. How it is?” I asked the doctor, being impatient.
The doctor’s facial expression changed. I glanced at Daisy. She wore a glum facial expression. Okay. Something felt fishy. I looked at the doctor coolly.
“Doctor, how is my baby? It’s still okay, right?” I asked desperately, becoming teary.
The doctor hid his hands in the pocket of his white coat.
“You had fallen from the stairs to the floor. Though, no bones were broken but—.” He paused.
“But what?” I followed up, with my voice almost cracked.
“You had a miscarriage.” He revealed.
Mis—? Wh-what did he mean by that?
“What do you mean by that, Doctor?” I asked tearfully.
“Calm down, Jackie!” Daisy said coaxingly.
I looked at her.
“Tell me what he is saying isn’t true? My baby is still alive, right?” I opposed.
Daisy’s eyes became teary.
“Jackie,” She called softly.
“No! You’re lying.” I cried as I faced the doctor,
“You both are lying. My baby isn’t dead. It’s alive.”
“Jackie,” She called me again, in a sympathetic tone,
“No! I don’t want to hear it.” I burst out in tears.
My baby isn’t dead. It can’t die. They were only trying to scare me. I don’t believe either of them.
“I’m not lying. The accident led to—.” She explained.
“No! No!” I said firmly, in tears.
The door opened and a nurse walked in with a tray. She walked towards the doctor. He picked up the syringe on the tray as well as the medicine in a bottle. He poke the cap on the bottle and extracted the medicine. He walked towards the drip bag and injected it.
My eyelids were becoming heavy. I couldn’t open them. I was became weak and drowsy.

Bleep! Bleep!
I opened my eyes slowly. I tilted my head tiredly. Liam was seated on the sofa, close to the window. He had his eyes on his phone and no idea I was awake. I turned over to the other side of the room. The windows were drawn. The sun had set and the sky was dark.
The door pulled open and got my attention. I looked forward. A nurse walked in, with her hands in her pockets.
“Um, excuse me, Sir?” She said to Liam.
Liam looked away from his phone and looked at her.
“I wanted to know if you will be sleeping here tonight.” She asked politely.
Liam replied in a nod. He turned his head swiftly and caught a glimpse of me. He kept his phone on the sofa and stood on his feet.
“If you need anything, I’ll be at the ward desk.” The nurse said.
Liam replied in a nod. The nurse reciprocated in a smile. She flashed a smile at me and left the room. I had my eyes at her until she had left the room completely.
Liam stood there, reluctant to talk to me. He had his hand in his pockets. Looking at him reminded me of the miscarriage. I placed my hand on my abdomen. He looked at the direction my hand was.
“It’s no longer there. You lost it.” He said bluntly.
My eyes became teary. I did my best to control myself. Liam walked towards me and looked at me blankly. He heaved a sigh. He stayed close to the bed, crouching down.
“The doctor couldn’t save it. You had loss a lot of blood. I’m sorry—.” He said coaxingly.
I blubbed. I couldn’t control myself. Liam held my hand and rubbed it. He used the other to wipe off the tears from my face.
“It’s okay. I know you are hurt by it but that doesn’t mean you—.”
“And Rex? Where is he?” I cut him off, flashing a glance at the window.
Liam’s facial expression changed. He slowly let go of my hand and stood up straight. He scowled at me. Did I say something wrong?
“You are really eager to see him? Aren’t I enough for you?” He asked sarcastically.
“I want to see my husband.” I said tearfully.
“Oh, your husband? That worthless man who abandoned you? He never answered nor returned Daisy’s calls. All afternoon, he is nowhere to be seen.” He scoffed,
“He is probably busy with work or his mistress. Tell me something, Jackie. Why do you feel comfortable knowing that he is always hurting you? Knowing that you’re not even his top priority nor was your late child? Doesn’t that sound stupid?”
“Please, call him. I want to speak to him.” I pleaded, heartbroken.
“Can you hear yourself?” He said coolly, a little pissed.
“Please.” I pleaded.
Even though he had told me to my face that he wanted to do with his child, I still wanted to tell him. Maybe, he might feel a little sad by its demise. Liam took my phone out of his pocket and gave it to me. He scowled at me and left the room.
I watched him until he had completely left the room. I picked up the phone and dialled Rex. It was ringing.
“Hell—.”
I paused.
“Ahhh!” A feminine voice moaned.
I blinked and tears ran down my cheeks. I lay down, speechless. I stayed silent and just listened.
“Oh, Rex! Yes!” She moaned again.
I could hear grunting in the background. I grasped the phone as I closed my eyes. I pressed the power button hard, automatically disconnecting the call. The phone slowly slipped out of my hand and fell to the floor. I didn’t care whether it shattered or not. My heart was broken into pieces that can’t glued together. First, my unborn child and now this.
