The Box
Kaya's POV
"You've had enough Kaya,” Ally said as I gulped the remainder of the red grape juice I had out in a glass. I let out a satisfied ‘ah’ before sliding it over the counter back to her, "Keep em coming," I dragged, as it slid right into her grasp. She rolled her eyes, reaching out for the bottle of red grape juice pouring me another glass.
We were currently back at Ally's house, and I was drinking what was left of all my sorrows away in her kitchen. It was a grace that Ally's mom and Dad had gone for their anniversary dinner so that left Ally alone for the time being and spared me curious stares from Aunt Kathy. I was not in the mood to start reliving memories I had just made an hour ago, especially not the ones of rejection that Legion had left inside me.
"This is the last cup though," Ally warned, sliding the half-full glass back to me before closing the remained of the juice and locking it up in the fridge.
"I wish I was drunk,” I groaned, as she turned back to face me folding her arms with a tried scowl on her face. "And I love my life. Your aunt would kill me, “Ally replied sliding in the seat next to me.
I scoffed at this, downing down the rest of my juice. She may think these were all dramatics but she wasn’t the boy repellant in this equation. How is it that two good-looking hunks of men kiss and ditch me all at once?
"What's wrong with me Ally?” I asked after slamming an empty glass down, feeling like a pity party.
She confirmed this when she looked down at me with pity, hovering over the kitchen island, "Now you know you're too good for those two, come on Kaya,” she persuaded. I would have believed it if I wasn’t so depressed already.
"One was alright,” I huffed, using my sleeve to wipe my mouth lazily as leaned over the counter, resting my chin on my hands, “but now Legion? What am I, kiss and ditch girl?” I asked placing the empty glass on the counter.
Ally sighed, running a hand through her long curls. I marveled at how she did that, if I had kept my curls, not even a comb could pass through that mess.
"Maybe you're not the problem" she added, with a slight shake of her head.
I rolled my eyes at this, it’s not like I hadn’t used that excuse on myself before, I mean come on, "I believed that for Mr. Jerk face,” I explained, “but now with the asshole thief?!” I huffed still unable to believe I somehow managed to mess seven that sucker up, “Nope, I'm the one with the problem,"
"Or maybe, this town is" Ally responded.
I looked at her trying very hard not to snap, my expression probably looked extremely unconvinced, but here was I crying over something I couldn't quite understand, and there she was convinced we had just solved something spectacular, still probably thinking about witches and every other ridiculous thing. I couldn’t do this right now, not with her. I shook my head breathing out.
"I'm serious Kaya,” she urged, “remember the way they said it? "Your kind" as if we were scum or something very insignificant. Unholy even," she added, eyes widening at her last statement.
Good heavens, I loved Ally but sometimes I wished I could slap some normal into her. I studied her for a minute, pursing my lips and flattening the will to smack that look on her face that seemed utterly convinced she had solved something. I blinked taking myself out of that daze, shaking my head as I stood up, "I should go home, and it’s getting late,”
She sighed at this, clearly reading my demeanor knowing I wasn’t in the mood, "all alright, fine,” she huffed, “let me drop you home,” she offered.
"It's fine,” I replied taking my coat off the chair, it’s a beautiful evening and I need to clear my head," I replied with a soft smile, I turned to leave stopping by the door, "thanks for the juice, and the shoulder to lean on.”
She smiled, nodding softly and I took that as a cue to walk out the door, "see ya on Monday!” I called, closing the door behind me.
********
I stepped into the cold streets, pulling my coat tightly around me, the sun had just set, and the street lights were now flickering on. The coldness immediately pooled around me as I rounded the street corner. I tried my best to focus on passing cars or at least the few people that were walking but my stupid mind kept flashing back to the memory of Legion's cold, stupid, handsome face.
Running a hand down my face as if that would somehow allow me to switch memories, I found myself staring at the deserted parking lot with only one very familiar car parked before a mart a few feet away. I could feel my heart immediately sink to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean when I realized the exact car that was.
Today was evidently not my frickin day when as if by strange unwanted karma, the culprit son of a gun walked out of the mart, with a brown package in his hands, heading straight for his car. He stopped right before unlocking the door, suddenly looking right at me.
I quickly turned away breath hitching as I tried my hardest to pretend that our eyes hadn’t just met. But there was no denying that stupid wave that went through me like it always did whenever our gazes accidentally met, whether in the school hallways or cafeteria or gym class, the only class I had with him.
I tried to ease my racing heart, keeping my eyes down on the pavement trying to subtly increase the pace of my walk without evidently giving out the fact that I was trying to walk faster to avoid him, but my heart didn’t get the message only pumping harder and louder till it felt like a ticking time bomb that could explode at any second.
My ears though feeling ice cold from the night breeze that blew softly in the air, were as attentive as ever, somehow managing to pick u exactly when he started the car, reversed it, and took it out of the lot. They only stood at attention, feeling the tips redden when the black car's engine roared softly behind me as I felt it coming up. I prayed so very hard he would just pass by with that black deathtrap of his and leave me on this pavement, but this day-this day sucked so bad.
I could feel the car slowly approaching me, seeming to decrease its pace the nearer it got to my frame and even though I knew what was coming I was still praying he would just drive by! My heart did a dive like the titanic when it paced beside me, hearing the swoosh of the car window rolling down. I was finding it hard to breathe, knowing who exactly I was going to face in the next few seconds.
Gulping softly, I glanced over at him, his eyes gentle and yet seemed to be a different color under this lighting I presumed as was walking by a street light, they almost seemed gold but then again a sort of green? I couldn’t quite understand the funny shade of his colors under this lighting. Maybe he was wearing contacts? I always wondered how he could see so well with a shade of blue eyes that mimicked that of an ocean beside a coral reef.
But with the anger and frustration, I had already had built up from earlier today I wanted to scream at them, tell them to just pick a color already and stop confusing me, it was a reaction I didn’t quite understand but I figured I just didn’t want to be in the same place or space with the two boys that rejected me for no apparent reason. This may probably my teen hormones and stuff blowing all this out of proportion but there was literally nothing I could do to change the way I was currently feeling.
However, I did restrain myself, my hands turning to fists in my pocket. What on earth did this jerk want? Oh god, good heavens above He better not-
"Get in," his voice came out pure and strong, firm with a tingle of gentle.
It was a funny feeling that overtook me at that moment, the urge to obey so bad I had to fight my brain to not get in no matter how much my body felt like cowering and doing what he wanted. There was just no way, absolutely no way at all I would let myself be used again.
I mustered up a dry chuckle, pulling my coat tighter around me "no thank you," I replied. I wanted nothing, nothing at all to do with either one of them. My life wasn't supposed to be so confusing, I had a stepfamily for that and a father who just one day decided his current family wasn’t good enough.
"Please."
I blinked twice at this, turning my head to look at him, not expecting it to have come out so earnestly. It didn't sound like he was pleading, more like begging, as if he had to, I had to. His eyes still remained that funny mix and I found myself marveling at his exquisite choice of contacts. His blue eyes were mesmerizing, but these colors on him were completely bewitching.
I was tempted to say no, but his contacts did their job putting a spell on me, something deep inside me suddenly deciding it would just be one drive. One drive and then I could put both Mr. Jerk face and Mr. Asshole in a box, lock them up and throw them and their confusion in the depths of the Pacific Ocean.
Yes.
This was the last day I would ever entertain either one of them. I sighed as he parked the car, allowing me to get in. I paused in front of the door looking back at the dark street breathing in. I hoped I didn’t regret this. Closing my eyes, I took the plunge in.
His car was nothing less than luxurious, and damn me to Tartarus for saying this, but it smelled like him, and I didn’t even know the exact scent but somehow I knew it smelled like-Power... Like dominance. I was tempted so badly to take a deep breath in, but I could feel his eyes on me but I decided not to entertain them, yes I decided to not even spare him a look as he started the car.
My eyes instead landed on the plastic bag I had spotted him with, now laid on the dashboard, spotting the familiar forms of lemons and honey. This caused me to glance his way surprised he was taking my advice. When I noticed he wasn’t looking at me and his eyes were silent watching the road I decided to ask, unable to hold my tongue, “lemons and honey?”
He nodded, his eyes shifting, “they worked well before, I thought I’d try them again.” He said, his eyes shifting yet again as if they were threatening to close, if anything he looked drowsy. I glanced back down at the bag, then back at the side of his face, my breath hitching when after we passed a street light, I could see the dark circles beneath his pretty eyes and what seemed like the weight of the world on him. If the lemons indeed had helped before, then why did he look so depleted? Wasn’t he supposed to get better? For the life of me, I didn’t know what the heck the Azian King could be going through as he seemed to somehow have the whole world bowing before his feet, but I knew nothing is ever what it seemed and I always wondered what sort of pressure being built like a god would give.
It was almost like his glamour had worn off. His eyes seemed puffy, his posture hunched, so, so different from the god that walked our halls, yet completely the same. I couldn’t quite understand it. Hell, I couldn’t quite understand the sudden ache dawning from inside me as I watched what looked like pain hidden on his face as he watched the road.
I wasn't thinking, I swear I wasn’t thinking when I reached forward to touch his hand that rested between us, no I just couldn't understand why he suddenly looked so drained. As soon as my fingers touched his hand, he looked down at it, as if studying the connection for a moment and my breath hitched afraid of what he might do. His eyes trailed to meet mine and I watched as his eyes dulled his normal blue, finding myself breathing out slowly at this. Not saying a word he turned back to the road, his lips slightly apart his chest falling in soft motions.
I didn’t know what that meant, I just knew for some reason I was going to leave my hand there for a while. And my eyes were going to study his face openly until every inch of it was pasted in my memory, a hollow pain in me as I trailed over every depleted mark that gave out how tired he was.
I never once showed him the direction to my home, I don’t recall ever speaking during that ride but he found it, parking just out front and I saw Aunt Lily peeping from the kitchen window momentarily just probably checking to see if it was really me.
I turned back toward him, my hand still on top of his, my eyes trailing every feature of his beautiful face, and he finally turned, a hand on his seat belt frozen as his icy eyes stared back into mine. I kept feeling like I was in a dream-like all this was happening in my head. My other hand moved from my own seat belt trailing down his face and I couldn’t understand where I developed such boldness from but I couldn’t help it, biting my lip.
"Close your eyes," I whispered breathily.
His eyebrows furrowed at this statement at first probably confused but I didn’t feel confused at that moment, maybe I didn’t understand it but it felt natural, I just felt like I needed to. My breath hitched when I saw his sun-kissed eyelids fall as if in relief, his hands gripping my mine tightly, and I never so protected by such a small gesture.
I felt a wave of peace, peace, and silence, one I knew he felt too. We kept this position for only a few minutes but when his breathing deepened, I knew he had somehow fallen asleep. I couldn't quite understand it all... But I don't want to. Watching him... Just looking peaceful made me feel peaceful. All that anger I had before had suddenly dissolved as I watched him. Studying every inch of his beautiful face, pushing away one of his golden locks and marveling at him. Oh, he was a perfect dream.
I closed my own eyes and drifted off into another world, where the same golden eyes haunted me. Little did I know, this was the first in a series of nights we'd spend together.
