Chapter 8 The Eyes In The Forest

The forest was unnaturally still. The trees, ancient and towering, loomed over them like silent sentinels, their branches twisted and gnarled, their bark dark as coal. The only sound was the occasional rustle of leaves in the breeze, a strange and eerie contrast to the tumult they had just escaped.
“Elara…” Kael’s voice was low, filled with uncertainty. His hand gripped the hilt of his sword tightly, his gaze scanning the shadows of the trees around them.
Rael’s staff hummed faintly in his grip, the blue glow now dim, but his eyes were wide with apprehension. "This place… it’s not on any map. Not in any legend I’ve heard.”
Elara’s breath quickened as she peered into the forest, her heart hammering in her chest. The shadows in the distance flickered, as though something moved between the trees. Her pulse raced. There was no wind, no sign of animal life, and yet… she couldn’t shake the feeling they were being watched.
“What do you see?” Kael’s voice was edged with frustration. He was too proud to show fear, but Elara could feel the tension in his posture.
“I—I don’t know.” Elara strained her eyes, trying to pierce the darkness of the trees. “But… I’m not alone out here.”
Rael stepped forward cautiously, his staff held out in front of him, the blue glow now flickering like a lantern in a storm. “Well, that’s reassuring,” he muttered. “I don’t like this one bit. It feels… wrong.”
As if on cue, there was a sound—a soft scraping, like claws on stone. It came from the right, from the shadows just beyond their line of sight. Elara spun around, her magic already coiling at the tips of her fingers.
Then, the eyes appeared.
They were large—too large—glowing with an eerie, unnatural light. Dozens of them. Floating in the shadows between the trees. Their gaze was unwavering, predatory.
“Elara,” Kael whispered urgently, his eyes darting around as if searching for something—anything—that could help them.
“We need to leave,” Rael said, his voice flat. But there was no hint of bravado now. The fear was palpable in his tone.
Elara clenched her fists, drawing her magic into a tight coil. She knew they couldn’t outrun whatever was in these woods, not with the forest seeming to close in on them with every passing second.
“Do not move,” she said quietly, her eyes flicking to Kael and Rael. "I’m going to try something."
Before either of them could protest, Elara extended her hand toward the nearest tree, focusing every ounce of her magic into it. Her fingers tingled as golden light wrapped around the gnarled trunk, weaving up into the branches.
There was a hum in the air—a vibration that made the hair on the back of her neck stand up. The eyes blinked. And the shadows moved.
Suddenly, the creature was revealed.
It was a massive, spectral wolf—its body formed entirely of shifting darkness, its fur the color of midnight. The eyes that stared back at them were blood-red, glowing like coals in a furnace. It moved slowly, its steps silent, but with an unmistakable sense of authority.
“Impossible,” Rael breathed, stepping back as if the creature’s presence alone was enough to freeze him in place. "It’s a Wraith."
“A Wraith?” Kael’s voice was sharp, the edge of a command in it, but he looked just as unnerved as Rael.
“Yes,” Elara said, still holding the tree with her magic. “A creature from the Shadowlands. They guard places like this—places between worlds.”
The wolf’s eyes narrowed as it took a step toward them, its body shifting like smoke. Its form seemed to flicker with each movement, as though it could vanish into the shadows at any moment.
“Great,” Rael muttered, “we’re stuck in some weird dimension, and now we’re facing a guardian beast.”
The Wraith growled low, a sound like wind howling through a graveyard. Its eyes fixed on Elara. Slowly, it padded forward.
“Don’t let it get close,” Elara warned, her voice tense. “They can steal magic.”
But as she spoke, the creature’s eyes glowed brighter, the air around them thick with oppressive darkness. Her own magic seemed to waver, flickering like a flame in a storm.
“What is it doing?” Kael asked, his eyes narrowing as the wolf inched closer.
Elara’s breath caught in her throat. “It’s trying to drain me.”
The Wraith lunged without warning, its massive jaws snapping shut with a force that would’ve torn Elara apart if she hadn’t thrown up a barrier of golden light just in time.
The impact sent her staggering back, the force of the Wraith’s attack nearly knocking her off her feet. But the shield held firm, glowing bright against the darkness that surrounded them.
Rael cursed under his breath, his staff raised high as he began chanting. “I hope this works.”
Before Elara could stop him, Rael launched a bolt of lightning at the Wraith. It struck the creature square in the chest, causing it to howl in pain. But even as the energy crackled across its form, the creature only paused for a moment before it leapt forward again, faster than Elara could react.
“Rael!” she shouted, but her voice was drowned out by the creature’s growl.
With a final, swift motion, the Wraith swiped its claws through the air, and Rael’s body was sent flying backward, crashing into a tree with a sickening thud.
“Elara!” Kael roared, rushing toward Rael, but the Wraith was already moving again, this time straight toward him.
“No!” Elara screamed, reaching out to stop it, but her shield flickered. The strain of holding it was too much.
In a blur, the Wraith’s claws were inches from Kael’s throat. He barely dodged, twisting aside at the last second, but the Wraith’s claws left deep gashes across his arm, blood seeping out in dark streams.
“Elara, help!” Kael grunted, stumbling back, his sword raised weakly.
Tears of frustration filled Elara’s eyes as she pushed her magic harder, but it wasn’t enough.
And then—unexpectedly—Rael surged to his feet, his staff glowing with a new, intense energy.
“I’m not dead yet, you demon,” Rael sneered, his voice laced with fury.
He slammed his staff into the ground, and a surge of power erupted in a bright blue explosion, sweeping over the entire area. The Wraith howled again, but this time, its form began to flicker more violently, its solidity beginning to wane.
Rael’s magic tore through the forest, leaving trails of glowing light in its wake as the Wraith recoiled. But it wasn’t gone. Not yet.
Elara’s magic pulsed again, and with one final burst of energy, she reached out, her hands shaking as she focused all her power into the air between them. The golden light surged forward, locking the Wraith in place, trapping it within a bubble of light.
Kael, his face pale but determined, drove his sword into the creature’s shadowy chest with a roar.
The Wraith howled once more, a sound that felt like it was ripping through Elara’s very soul. But the creature’s form began to break apart, its body unraveling into nothingness.
As it disintegrated, the air cleared, the oppressive weight of its presence lifting. Silence fell once more over the forest.
But Elara couldn’t breathe easy. The shadows still lingered. And she could feel it—the deep, gnawing sense that this was only the beginning.
She looked to Rael. “What now?”
Rael wiped blood from his lip and looked back at her, his eyes hard. “We keep moving. The Shadowlands don’t let go so easily.”
And just as Elara was about to ask what he meant, the earth beneath them trembled again, far more violently than before. The air thickened with an unsettling magic, and in the distance, something else was stirring.
Something even worse.
