Chapter 63 Into the Depths

The rift in the ground swallowed them before they could even take a breath. One moment, Elara and Kael were standing on the edge of a collapsing cavern, facing the looming, mocking Guardian and the growing rumble of destruction. The next moment, the earth split wide, and they were falling—falling deeper than they had ever fallen before.
The rush of air around them was deafening, their bodies twisting as they plummeted through the blackness. Elara’s heart raced in her chest, the familiar fear of freefall gripping her, but the strange thing was, this time, she didn’t feel completely helpless. The magic that had erupted within her still pulsed faintly, like a thread of light in the abyss of her mind.
Kael was falling beside her, his hand still gripping hers despite the chaos of their descent. His voice cut through the rush of wind. “Hold on!” he shouted, his voice barely audible. But Elara heard him—just as she always did.
“I’m with you,” she shouted back, her words swallowed by the roar of the void around them.
The fall seemed endless, the darkness wrapping around them like an inescapable prison. But then, out of the void, something else emerged.
A faint glow. A shimmer in the darkness. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to catch Elara’s attention. Her instincts screamed at her, urging her to reach for it, to direct her magic toward it. With a desperate cry, she focused all her energy into her hands, channeling what little power she had left into the glow.
The air around them shifted, swirling as if bending to her will. For a moment, the chaos of their descent slowed, and the light grew brighter.
“Elara, what are you doing?” Kael asked, his voice filled with confusion and concern. But Elara didn’t answer. She was too focused on the light, too focused on the magic guiding her toward it.
With one final, desperate push, her magic exploded outward, creating a burst of light that wrapped around them both. The light expanded, surrounding them in a protective cocoon that slowed their fall, cushioning them as they tumbled toward the unseen depths below.
The ground rushed up to meet them with terrifying speed. Elara squeezed her eyes shut, preparing for impact, but it never came. Instead, the light surrounding them softened, like a net catching them mid-air, and they came to a gentle, albeit sudden, halt.
For a long moment, Elara didn’t dare to open her eyes. She was disoriented, her body aching from the fall, but the magic surrounding them was calming, as though they were no longer in immediate danger.
When she finally opened her eyes, she was met with an eerie sight. The glow of their magic had illuminated a massive cavern—a cavern so vast it seemed to stretch forever. The walls were slick with moisture, and the air was thick with the smell of ancient earth.
But it wasn’t the cavern that caught her attention—it was the strange, otherworldly beauty that lay ahead.
A massive stone structure stood before them, half-buried in shadow, its edges glowing faintly with the same eerie light that had surrounded them. The building appeared to be ancient, older than anything Elara had ever seen. It had been carved with intricate symbols, some familiar, others unrecognizable. And in the center, glowing with an almost magnetic pull, was a single, large, dark crystal embedded deep within the stone.
“The heart…” Elara whispered, her voice thick with awe and fear.
Kael looked at her, his expression a mix of confusion and concern. “What is this place?”
“I think…” Elara trailed off, her eyes still locked on the crystal. “I think this is the source. The core of the Abyss.”
Kael stepped closer to her, his gaze following hers to the dark crystal. He looked back at her, his brow furrowed. “What do you mean, the source? The Abyss comes from here?”
Elara nodded slowly. “Yes, I believe so. This place, this… structure. It’s where the Abyss was born. It’s not just a rift in the realm—it’s the birthplace of everything that has been corrupted. If we can destroy this, we can stop the Abyss from consuming the world.”
Kael’s eyes widened, and he took a step forward, his hand reaching for her. “But how do we destroy it? If this is truly the heart, it’s like the center of everything—wouldn’t that mean destroying it would destroy everything around it too?”
Elara hesitated, the weight of the decision pressing down on her. She could feel the pull of the crystal, the way it seemed to call to her, as though it recognized her power. But the deeper her magic drew her to it, the more she sensed that destroying it wouldn’t be as simple as wielding a spell.
“I don’t know,” she confessed, her voice trembling with uncertainty. “But we have to try.”
Kael’s hand rested on her shoulder, a reassuring touch in the midst of the uncertainty. His gaze softened. “Then we’ll try together. Whatever it takes.”
For a moment, the two of them stood in silence, the hum of the crystal vibrating in the air around them. The cavern seemed to pulse with an unnatural energy, and Elara could feel it tugging at her, urging her closer to the source.
She knew that this would be the greatest test of her magic—of their magic. But there was no turning back now. They had to stop the Abyss from consuming everything.
As Elara moved toward the crystal, her steps faltering, she could feel the power surging from it, the pull growing stronger. She had to concentrate, to block out everything else. The Abyss would not claim her again. It couldn’t.
But just as she was about to reach the base of the crystal, a loud, booming voice reverberated through the cavern.
“ Foolish mortals, ” it said, a voice that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once. “ You think you can destroy the heart of the Abyss? It will consume you, just as it has consumed all who have come before you. ”
Elara froze, her heart racing. She knew that voice. It was the Guardian, the same cold, ancient voice that had haunted her every step in the last few days.
The shadows in the cavern seemed to writhe and twist, converging on them like a tide. The walls around them began to shift and crack, revealing more and more of the dark tendrils that had followed them here.
“Elara!” Kael shouted, pulling her back. “We need to go!”
But it was too late. The cavern was shifting—collapsing under the weight of the Guardian’s power.
And as the crystal before them began to crack, glowing with an intense, blinding light, Elara realized with horror that the Abyss wasn’t just contained here. The Guardian wasn’t just guarding it—it was feeding it.
They had no choice now but to fight—or be consumed.
And as the light from the crystal blazed brighter, Elara knew they were running out of time.
