Chapter 65 The Awakening
The figure that emerged from the shadows was not a man, nor a beast. It was something else entirely—an entity that pulsed with the very essence of the Abyss. It was tall, towering over them with an aura of darkness so thick it seemed to swallow the light from the cavern. Its form shifted constantly, like smoke in the wind, never fully taking shape, but Elara could feel its presence, like a thousand unseen eyes watching her, waiting.
And then, it spoke.
“ You dared challenge the heart of the Abyss? ” The voice was deep, cold, and ancient, its words vibrating in Elara’s chest. “ Foolish mortals. You will regret this. ”
Kael groaned beside her, still unconscious, his face twisted in pain. Elara’s breath hitched as she scrambled to her feet, her heart hammering in her chest. The figure’s presence alone was enough to freeze her blood, but the raw power emanating from it made her body tremble with fear.
Her mind raced. She couldn’t fight something like this—not with the little magic she had left. They were cornered, vulnerable. And yet, she couldn’t just leave Kael here. She couldn’t abandon him. She needed to think. She needed to—
“ You think you can stop me? ” The entity’s voice mocked her, but Elara didn’t have time to be intimidated.
She stepped forward, her hands outstretched, her fingers trembling with the faint remnants of magic that still lingered in her veins. She focused, drawing on everything she had learned, every scrap of power that had ever surged through her. It wasn’t enough, she knew that, but desperation had a way of pushing the limits of what was possible.
With a cry, Elara sent a burst of light toward the figure. It struck the entity’s form, but instead of fading into nothing, it seemed to only make the creature grow stronger. The light absorbed into its dark shape, rippling through the shadow like liquid.
“ Pathetic, ” the entity snarled, its voice dripping with disdain. It raised a hand—if it could even be called a hand—clawed and elongated, as dark as the deepest pit. The air around Elara thickened, the pressure becoming unbearable. “ I am the end of all things. I was born from the rift you have meddled with, and you will learn just how futile your efforts truly are. ”
The words felt like chains, wrapping around Elara’s chest, squeezing the air from her lungs. Her knees buckled, and she gasped for breath, fighting against the suffocating force. But she couldn’t move. She couldn’t think. The Abyss was closing in, drowning her.
Kael stirred beside her, a weak groan escaping his lips. His eyes fluttered open, but they were clouded with confusion and pain. He looked up at the looming figure, his breath ragged as he tried to focus.
“Elara,” he whispered, his voice hoarse. “What’s happening?”
“Elara!” The voice in her mind—the voice of her magic, the one she had learned to trust, screamed through her thoughts. Don’t give in!
With everything she had, Elara forced her hand to move, reaching out toward Kael, trying to grasp his hand. Their fingers brushed, and in that fleeting contact, Elara felt something shift. Something powerful. Something that hadn’t been there before.
Kael’s gaze locked with hers, confusion replaced by something else—something deeper. She could see it now. They weren’t just two separate forces anymore. They were… connected. Her magic pulsed with his, something in the air between them shifting, creating a bond that she couldn’t explain, but could feel with every fiber of her being.
“Elara…” Kael breathed again, his eyes narrowing as they fixed on the figure before them. “We have to fight this together.”
The words struck her like a spark in the dark. Together.
Together.
Her heart raced, the magic inside her swelling as Kael’s own power started to resonate with hers. It was like a spark caught fire—something ancient, primal, and unstoppable. She could feel his strength, his resolve, melding with her own. The Abyss had underestimated them.
With a surge of newfound energy, Elara rose to her feet, pulling Kael with her. The pressure from the entity’s power was still there, but now it felt… manageable. She didn’t know how or why, but she knew one thing: they had the power to stop this. Together.
With a cry, Elara focused, her palms open to the air as she drew the energy from Kael’s magic, channeling it into a blast of searing light. The entity recoiled, its form flickering as if the light burned it, but it wasn’t enough. The creature’s eyes—if they could be called eyes—narrowed.
“ You think you can stop me? You’re nothing but children playing with forces you don’t understand! ”
The cavern rumbled, and the walls began to shake as if the very foundations of the world were about to crumble. But Elara didn’t hesitate. She couldn’t.
She could feel Kael beside her, his presence grounding her, his magic sparking through hers. They were stronger together than they had ever been apart. It was their only chance.
The entity reached for them, its claws elongating, twisting like serpents in the dark. But Elara, with Kael’s strength behind her, raised both hands high.
"Together!" she shouted, and as if her words were a command, a torrent of light erupted from them both. The beam shot forward, a radiant force that tore through the cavern like a cleansing flame.
The entity howled in pain, its form shuddering and twisting, its features becoming distorted as the light struck it directly. The shadows around it flared and splintered, unable to hold their shape.
But just when Elara thought victory was within reach, something unexpected happened.
The crystal behind them—still faintly glowing—shuddered violently. A pulse of dark energy shot through the cavern, surging into the figure, feeding it, amplifying its power.
“No…” Elara whispered, her heart sinking. “It’s not over…”
The entity’s form solidified, the darkness around it thickening as it absorbed the energy from the crystal. The shadows coiled around the cavern like serpents, and the air grew colder. The ground cracked beneath them, and Elara felt the cavern begin to collapse around them.
Kael grabbed her arm, pulling her toward the only solid ground left. “We have to leave!” he yelled.
But Elara couldn’t tear her eyes away from the figure. It was growing stronger, its body now resembling something humanoid, though its features were still nothing more than a mass of shadow and darkness. The Abyss was evolving, shifting, becoming something far more dangerous than she had ever imagined.
And in that moment, she realized the terrifying truth.
They had only made it stronger.
Before she could act, the ground trembled beneath her feet.
The entity reached toward them, its arm—no, its shadowy limb—stretching, faster than Elara could react.
And then, it was all darkness.Download Novelah App
