CHAPTER TWENTY ONE: Strangers you meet

Should I step out of the bathroom? Or pretend that I passed out because I’m not feeling well and I’m too tired to talk and entertain them? I feel sick to my stomach.
There are no butterflies, just my organs juggling inside. I feel the heat inside it and it’s travelling to my heart now. I want to vomit but I my stomach’s empty.
Reading her texts earlier made me lose my appetite.
There’s nothing for me to vomit.
What secretary said earlier, about deciding for myself because it’s my own life, she’s right but it’s not easy to do.
There’s a lot of chance that there will be consequences if I decide to kick her out of my life. She’s a monster, and I’m not destined to defeat a monster.
I think I am that Character who fell in love with a monster who’s obsessed with me.
I flinched when I heard a knock. “Jess, you okay in there?”
“Ah, yeah. Just give me a minute, Jax.”
“Oh okay, but can you hurry up? I’m running out of story to tell her. I’m scared that she’ll think of me as a boring person.”
I didn’t answer him, but I turn the water on.
Seconds later, I hear him walk away.
How innocent he is. No idea what’s really going on here. I envy him on that part, I wish not to know what’s really going on. At least, in that way, I have nothing to fear except how to pay my bills.
When I go back, I see them sitting on the floor.
“Oh, hi Jess. Come here.” She taps the floor beside her. Jax is just smiling at me waiting for me to sit between them, so I did.
“So, what are we doing?” I hid my hands inside my sweater by stretching the sweater to cover my hands. It’s cold now, I can feel the rain coming.
“I don’t know.” Jax said.
“I understand you, Jax. We’ve been talking for hours.” She said that she’s running out of stories. How about we all shut our mouths? “How about you tell us about your day?” She looks at me.
“Uhm…” Make something up, Jess.
“There’s nothing interesting about my day. Just articles after articles.”
“Aw, that’s boring. How about you tell us your personal stories about Kathy? He told me that you two were close.” She looks at Jax who’s nodding.
“Yes, please. At least in this way, we practice remembering her.” Jax said. He’s just agreeing to everything she’s saying because she’s a celebrity. He knows my stories about her. Well, the stories I only want him to know.
“Fine.” I look down, trying to think of a story that doesn’t include romantic activities Kathy and I did. “This time that we went to be witness of a wedding.” I sit comfortably before continuing the story.
It was a sunny day. March of the year, the sun is so bright to the point that we hated that we’re existing. Jax is in some kind of seminar and training, so we have our time secured.
“So hot, so boring.” She said. With carton in her right hand, she’s swaying up and down. Her gray sando’s soaking wet because of her sweat.
“I hate this time of the year. I can’t handle the heat.” I commented. I’m swaying my hands up and down to, getting more intense time by time.
“How about the aircon, can we open it?” she suggests.
“We just turned it off 5 minutes ago. Give it a rest.”
“How about the electric fan?”
“You know it’s no use, eh? The air it’s producing, it’s hot too.”
“I don’t know what bad thing this country did in the past, but this weather is a torture. We can’t even hug when sleeping because we sweat a lot.” She rolled her eyes.
We’re sitting at the plastic chairs positioned in the balcony. I can see my neighbors in their balcony, too. I guess we’re all feeling hot.
“How about we go to the mall? It’s cold.” I suggested, she agrees. The mall here is walking distance only so we didn’t bother to wear fancy clothes.
Finally, cold air.
“Ugh, this feels good. Why didn’t you think of this earlier?” she’s walking cheerfully now, like she just got out of something boring. “Ops, looks like many people had the same idea to go here.” She’s looking at a bunch of people.
“Aw, how about we go to the roof top? I heard they have new tambayan up there.”
“There’s no aircon there.”
“No, there’s a room with aircon up there. We can still view the city.” She finally agrees with me. We ride the elevator, when we reach the rooftop, there’s only 5 people there. A couple, and a family.
“This is so great. Seems only few people know about this.” She pulled me near the window, and we settled there.
We ordered our food and waited in silence while enjoying the view. It’s not long until I noticed that only 4 of us left inside. The couple and us. They moved near the window, one table separating us.
“This is so beautiful.” Short haired girl said. They are a beautiful couple; I think they’re in the same age as ours.
“Right? I saw this online and I though that it will be a good spot for this.” The boy pulled something out of his pocket. It’s a ring! He’s going to propose.
Kathy and I both watch them in surprise. We’re both smiling, adoring them.
“Oh my God!” short haired girl is in total surprise. “Wes, is this serious? What about our parents? You know my dad.”
“We both know your dad doesn’t like me. They’re just going to take you away from me.” He takes her hand. “How about we take our fate in our own hands? If you like.”
“Of course! Of course, I want to.” She said. She’s so excited, crying. “But we need to do this immediately, eh? It will not be long until they found out about this, they always do.”
“How about we get married today? Is that okay with you?”
“I would love that!” she squeezed him into a hug.
Kathy hugs my side, she’s tearing up.
“What do we need to do this? Get married?” short haired girl asks the boy.
“A priest, and documents? I don’t know, never done this before.” They chuckle.
“Excuse me.” Kathy interfered, making them look at us. “You need a witness.”
“Oh my God, who’s going to be our witness? If we tell our friends, we’re not sure if we can trust them not to tell our parents. I mean, we still don’t know who told them about our vacation last month, eh?” boy nods with what short haired girl said.
Kathy looks at me, her eyes pleasing me about something. “Maybe we can make them happy?”
My eyebrows furrowed. “Like what? Be their witness? We don’t even know them.” I whisper at her.
She shrugs. “It’s fine. I mean can you go home tonight, sleep peacefully knowing that you never gave them a chance to have a wedding today?”
I rolled my eyes, she’s manipulating me. Should I let her manipulate me this time?
“Please, guys? I mean, we can pay you to be our witnesses.” I didn’t even notice that they are listening to us.
Kathy’s looking at me, there’s a desperate look in her eyes. Now, I can’t say no.
“Fine.”
“Yes!” the three of them cheers.
“We’re also the planning team. How about that?” the boy said. He reached for a shake hand. “I’m Wes, Wes Martinez.”
“I’m Kyla Robin.” Short haired girl introduce. Robin? As in the politician man? No wonder they’re scared. “So, are you guys go? Like for real?”
“Of course, I mean we’re not really busy this whole week.” Kathy explains, I just nodded.
“So, what happened after that?” Denise is enjoying the Finger snack Jax prepared while I’m telling her the story. He said that he already knows about the story, so he’ll make us snacks instead.
“We planned, then we went to this beautiful resort outside of the city.”
“Tell me more about it.”
“Of course.”
