chapter 54

The next morning, Mabella walked through the school gates with her heart fluttering like a thousand butterflies. Even though the dance had ended the night before, the warmth of Aiden’s hand still lingered in hers, and the memory of his smile played on a loop in her mind. Her lips curved unconsciously as she thought back to the way his eyes softened when he looked at her.
And yet, despite the blooming joy, there was an uneasiness clawing at her chest. Her instincts, sharp as ever, whispered that something unfortunate was waiting just around the corner. She shook her head quickly, pressing her palms to both cheeks with a loud smack. The sting of the slap was enough to make her wince, but it helped her focus. No, she told herself, she would not ruin her morning with baseless worries. She had Aiden by her side now. Everything would be fine.
With renewed determination, she lifted her chin and scanned the courtyard. Her eyes darted from one group of students to another until they landed on the familiar figures she sought. There they were: Aiden and his friends, gathered in their usual spot, laughing and exchanging playful remarks.
Her heart leapt, but she forced herself to approach calmly, masking her excitement with a composed smile. She clutched the strap of her bag tightly and stepped forward.
“H-hi everyone!” Mabella greeted, her voice as sweet as she could manage.
The cheerful chatter between the group halted almost instantly. The laughter died down, leaving an unexpected silence hanging in the air. One by one, their eyes shifted toward her, their expressions unreadable.
Mabella’s smile faltered. Her fingers clenched around the strap of her bag as she blinked, trying to steady herself under the sudden weight of their gazes. “Uh… um… h-hello…?” she tried again, her voice much softer this time.
Finally, it was Aiden who broke the tension. His lips curled into a small smile, his tone gentle. “Snuggle bug, morning.”
Relief flooded her entire body at the sound of his voice. The tightness in her chest eased, and she let out a quiet sigh before her smile bloomed once more. “Morning, Aiden,” she replied, her voice tinged with affection.
The moment softened the edges of the silence. Emma, ever the bright spirit, gave Sophia’s arm a playful pat before stepping closer to Mabella. She reached out to hold Mabella’s hand, her eyes sparkling. “Morning, Mabel! You look adorable today, as always.”
Color immediately rushed to Mabella’s cheeks. She ducked her head shyly, mumbling, “E-Emma looks lovely too…” Her voice trailed off, but the sincerity in her tone made Emma grin.
Seeing Mabella react in such a familiar, innocent way, Sophia finally relaxed, her suspicion loosening its grip. She slung an arm around Mabella’s shoulders, pulling her closer with sisterly warmth. “You never change, do you? Always too cute for your own good.” She playfully pinched Mabella’s cheek, earning a tiny squeak from her.
Within moments, the atmosphere shifted back to normal. Mabella found herself laughing softly at Sophia’s teasing, her eyes sparkling as Emma joined in. Aiden walked beside her, quietly but protectively, his presence steadying her as though nothing in the world could ever harm her. The four of them naturally drifted toward the classrooms, talking and laughing along the way.
But behind them, the others remained standing. Marcos lifted a shoulder, his expression skeptical but less tense now. “Maybe we’re just being paranoid. Rumors don’t exactly prove anything.”
Rohan gave a small nod, the crease in his brow smoothing slightly.
“Exactly,” Marcus added, shoving his hands into his pockets before turning away. “Let’s not waste our time doubting her for no reason. Come on, the others are already ahead.” Without waiting for an answer, he started walking, following after Aiden, Emma, Sophia, and Mabella.
Rohan and Marcos exchanged a glance before trailing behind Marcus. Their steps carried less hesitation now, though a faint unease still lingered.
Only Gianna remained still. She stood rooted to the spot, her gaze fixed on the distant figure of Mabella walking so happily beside Aiden. There was something sharp in her eyes, something questioning. Unlike the others, she was not ready to dismiss the rumors so easily. The nagging feeling in her gut told her there was more to Mabella than the sweet smile and timid laughter she showed.
Her lips curved slightly, not in amusement but in thought. Then, silently, she began to follow the rest of the group, her mind already racing with unspoken questions.
