Chapter 66 The Battle

Nora's POV
"Thanks for tonight." Damon said as he parked the car in the garage later that night.
I turned to him and smiled. I shrugged even though I was tripping like crazy inwardly. The gala had been a success. Damon had met and connected with a lot of people and I hoped that helped his business.
"Good night, Damon." I said, slipping out of the car.
I didn't have to wait for him as he had already told me he was heading back to the office. I hoped he didn't work himself to death. My child needed him as a father. I ignored the voice in my head telling me my child wasn't the reason I didn't want him going back to the office that night.
The smile on my face froze as I walked into my bedroom. My eyes scanned the room and the frown etched on my face sank deeper. The room looked spotless but I could tell something was wrong. I couldn't tell what it was but something was off.
Having survived life roughly, I knew better than to not trust my gut. I felt like someone had been in my room and I wondered who it had been. I had my room locked and in a rare moment, I doubted if I should really trust my guts.
No one could have been in the room when the key was with me. I decided that I was letting paranoia get the best of me and shrugged off the discomfort I felt.
I undressed, slid into the shower and prepared for bed.
The next day birthed clarity. I realized what it was that my guts had been trying to tell me earlier during the day after gobbling up the hearty breakfast that Jane had given me.
"My supplements," I gasped with shock as I frantically searched for them on the drawer that they were meant to be.
I knew even as I turned everything in my room upside down that they weren't in my room anymore. Someone had taken them and it was exactly who I believed it was.
This time, I chose to trust my gut.
What a payback for going out with her husband.
I sat on the bed, defeated and tired after the strenuous morning exercise I hadn't planned to have. I was gasping and heaving for breath when Jane made her way back into the room to pack the dishes.
"Why do you look like this?" She gasped, stopping in her tracks at the sight of me.
I looked like a car ran through me, I had no doubt. Without checking my reflection to know how I was, I felt exactly how I would look.
Sweat dabbed my skin, my hair hung wet and limp on my scalp, my dress had damp trails along the edges and my breaths got released in short pants as if I had fought with a gnome and still reeled from the experience.
"I spent the last few minutes turning my room upside down."
At my words, she looked around, glancing at my room for the first time since she entered that morning and gasped at the disaster she saw.
What a disaster it really was.
If I hadn't done that myself, I would have wondered what made someone else behave like that.
"What were you looking for? You should have called for me."
I hadn't even thought of calling for her.
"My supplements." I responded, wondering if she perhaps knew where they are and I didn't have to blame someone who wasn't guilty.
Her eyes narrowed and she let out a long hiss. "Sasha and Betsy." She scowled, echoing my exact fears.
"Did you see them take it?" I asked, not choosing to believe that Sasha would have dared to enter my room and steal my stuff.
I knew that lady wasn't above anything but I wanted to give her the benefits of doubt still.
She rolled her eyes. "Would they have been able to steal your supplements if I had seen either of them in the act or close to your bedroom?"
I sighed, knowing she was right. She wouldn't have allowed that.
"Let's check the room one more time. It's possible I don't know where I placed them after using them." I said, rising to my feet.
She gave me a weird look and I knew exactly what it meant. She knew as much as I did that another violent search of the room wouldn't yield anything.
I had deliberately placed the drugs on the drawer beside my bed so I wouldn't forget and do exactly what I had spent the last few minutes doing.
I kissed the bed back with my butt, letting out a long sigh of defeat and resignation. "I guess I have to make another trip to the hospital to get a new prescription."
Jane shook her head. "I should have known something was up with Betsy when she was unnecessarily excited this morning. She sang all through in the kitchen as we were making breakfast."
"Do you think we should search their rooms?" I asked, hope brimming in my heart.
The thought of going to the hospital and pretending to be Sasha again so soon irked me. I didn't want to be that troublesome woman for any more second.
She snorted. "I doubt they would have your drugs in their rooms. Knowing how they are, they have likely flushed the pills down the toilet."
I didn't doubt that.
I guessed I was going to make the trip to the hospital after all.
She stared at me for a while and then sighed. "Why don't you tell Mr. Bennett what is going on? I see the way the two of you are. He isn't one for warm reception but he treats you better than he treats Madam Sasha."
It was my turn to snort. My relationship with Damon was fragile and telling him about the issues I had with Sasha and forcing him to pick a side would snap the bond we were barely mending.
I smiled and shook my head at Jane, mentally preparing myself again for long days of enduring troubles in the house.
