Chapter 68 The Hidden Claws

Nora's POV
"Welcome, my darlings." Cara beamed as we made our way into their living room.
She embraced first her son and Sasha, saving me for the last. I didn't mind just as I didn't mind that Sasha had pushed herself into the passenger seat beside Damon on the way and left me no choice but to sit at the back. I had been helpless and forced to watch as she shamelessly talked animatedly to Damon, touched and flirted with him as he drove.
The only consolation had been that Damon had ignored her, doing a perfect act of pretending that she didn't exist. I had struggled not to bark out in laughter as I watched her pathetic attempts to rub it in my face that Damon was her husband.
"Come on in," Cara asked after giving me the briefest hug in history.
I didn't mind that too, knowing that she had done that for Sasha's sake.
"Where is dad?" Damon asked.
"He is out golfing with his friends but will soon join us." Cara replied. "Why don't you join them? I'm sure he will be proud to have you around."
Damon snorted. "I have better things to do than play golf with a bunch of old men."
Cara arched her eyebrows, not looking pleased with his response. "Do I need to remind you that your father is one of the old men you just scorned?"
"Being my father doesn't make him any less old." He replied, not at all repentant.
She shook her head. "There is just no way to get to you." She sighed but I could detect amusement in her voice.
Regardless of how annoying she found her son, she was still proud of him. My thoughts went to the child growing in my belly and my hand moved to my belly, lightly stroking it. I felt eyes on me and quickly removed my hand when I felt Sasha staring at me.
However, instead of the scowl I had grown to expect, a smile lit up her face and I felt more uncomfortable, looking away from her quickly.
"How is my champ doing?" Cara asked, glancing at my belly and smiling at me.
"Fine." I replied.
"When is your next appointment with the doctor?" Cara asked.
I glanced briefly at Sasha, not wanting to divulge sensitive information in her presence. I had no choice but to respond though as Cara was staring at me, patiently waiting for a response.
"In the next two weeks." I announced grudgingly.
"I think I will be free that day." Sasha grinned. "What do you think about me going with her, Cara?"
Free from what exactly? I wanted to roll my eyes at her.
"I..." I didn't want her anywhere close to me. Why did she have to ask Cara that when I was the one with the appointment?
"Why do you intend to go with her?" Cara asked.
I heaved a sigh of relief, loving that she wasn't fooled by Sasha's unexpected kindness.
Sasha shrugged, a smile I knew to be fake still on her lips. "Didn't you say we should live in peace? I'm doing my best to making her feel at ease and help her have a smooth pregnancy experience." She smiled at me. "I won't go in with her and cause trouble with our identical faces. I can just drive her there so she won't have to stress herself with driving. We can take one of the tinted cars to the hospital if you are bothered about people seeing the two of us together in public and getting their tongues wagging."
Her words sounded like a good idea but only to a daft person. I would rather trust a snake not to bite me than trust her to be good to me as she was pretending to be.
I glanced at Cara and sighed, seeing that she had melted and totally fallen for her lies. I couldn't read Damon as his gaze was pinned on Sasha, staring at her as if he was trying to assess her layer by layer.
His eyes narrowed and his lips had a strange curve to them at the edges. I hoped he also didn't fall for her lies.
"One of the drivers can take her to the hospital." Cara said.
I breathed, glad that she had her senses with her after all.
Sasha pouted. "I was just trying to bond with her. You didn't have to slam a door in my face. After all, she is carrying my husband's child. Being her enemy won't be of any advantage to me."
Cara winced and her face colored with shame just as I knew Sasha intended her to feel. "Maybe you can—"
"I will go with her." Damon announced, breaking off Cara's permission for Sasha to go with me.
"You are busy." Sasha turned to him.
"And she is carrying my child." Damon retorted. "Thanks for reminding me of that, wife. Nothing should keep me away from the care of my child. I'm the one expected to be there as the father." He flashed a smile that was anything but affectionate at her.
Sasha glowered at him for a few seconds before catching herself. She smiled. "Of course, you should, husband." She said, glaring at me as she said the last word.
I sighed, tired of the tension brimming underneath and relieved that I wouldn't have to be with Sasha and find out what her ridiculous plan was.
"I'm glad we have sorted out the issue. Well done on being willing to live at peace with Nora." Cara smiled.
I snorted to myself as I stared at Cara, knowing without a doubt that my supposed mother-in-law had a problem. She believed whatever it was that she wanted to believe.
What a lovely family we were.
