Chapter 24 An Unexpected Act of Kindness

Nora's POV
"What?" Emily asked, staring at me. "I didn't hear what you said."
"I didn't say anything." I lied.
"I thought I heard you mumble something."

"I didn't."
She shrugged, not interested in arguing with me. "So what is it? You've had your first kiss with Damon or you are still working toward it?"
I cleared my throat, feeling uncomfortable. "I need to use the restroom."
I didn't want to discuss with her anymore. The conversation was putting unwanted images in my head. I had no idea why I was slightly happy that Damon hadn't kissed Sasha or why I imagined myself kissing him. Why did she have to say that and affect my thoughts?
No, I didn't want to kiss Damon. Not at all.
I convinced myself that I wasn't attracted to Damon and shook my head.
"Excuse me, Emily." I said as I stood myself and walked off toward the restroom.
I didn't feel the need to pee but entered one of the stalls in case Emily followed me. I couldn't put it past her to be that crazy for information. I flushed even though I didn't use the toilet and peered outside the door to check she wasn't around before stepping out. I breathed in relief at her absence and took my time washing my hand, hoping she would have found someone else to talk with by the time I got out.
"Sasha," she called out, waving her hand in the air the moment I stepped back into the hall.
She had changed positions, chatting with a few ladies but apparently still wanted me to join them. I stood still, rooted to a spot with fear and discomfort. I didn't think I wanted to deal with three more Emilies. I might lose my mind if I had to listen to more tales of how they tolerated their husbands' infidelity for gifts and the societal status of being elite wives. Moreover, I didn't want to be on a hot seat, questioned by them on how my first kiss with Damon was or laughed at for not having kissed him yet.
Seeing that I was rooted to a spot, Emily assumed that I didn't hear or see the hand she had waved in the air and started walking toward me to drag me to their midst.
"Oh!" I breathed, panting and exhaling short puffs of air as I wondered where Damon was.
Just as Emily got to me, I felt a hand on my waist and jumped as I turned to check who it was. My body sagged, relaxing with relief as I saw that it was Damon. I blinked, unable to hide the relief and gratitude I felt at his presence as I stared at him. He was my answered prayer at that moment.
He barely spared me a glance before looking away and turning to Emily.
He cleared his throat. "I'm afraid I have to steal my wife away from you ladies."
Emily giggled. "Oh! No problem." She turned to me. "See you soon, Sasha." She gave me a wink before heading off to the other ladies.
"Shall we?" Damon asked. "I'm done with my meeting."
"Please," I agreed. I was done ages ago.
Damon led me out of the hall to the car. He opened the door for me because of the watching eyes that were around and then moved around the car to the driver's seat.
"Did you have fun with Emily?" He said as he slid into the car. "I know I told you to keep her company so she can put in a good word for me to her husband but it seemed like you bonded well with her."
I scoffed, leaning back into the chair as I kicked off the heels I wore. "Fun? She is extremely boring it is a surprise you didn't find me sleeping."
"What was that wink for?" He glanced at me as he started the car.
"She thought we have started sleeping together. She wanted to know if we've had our first kiss." I sighed.
He stopped driving suddenly that I lurched forward as the car came to an abrupt stop. "What?"
"Don't kill us, please."
"She knew we haven't shared a kiss? How?" His eyes were wide with disbelief.
"Apparently, your wife isn't someone who found it hard to share details of her marital woes with others."
"Damn it, Sasha." He cursed, his hands tightening on the wheels.
I smiled at his reaction, remembering that had been my exact reaction to the news of Sasha's loose tongue. He could curse all he wanted.
"This woman would be the end of me." He groaned as he continued driving.
I agreed with him but knew Sasha would be the death of me first. I was the impersonator after all.
