Chapter 20 Slipping on the Mask

Nora's POV
"What are you doing?"
My eyes widened at the sound of that voice and my heart almost leaped out in fear as I slowly raised my head up from the diary to the door where he stood, glaring at me as if he wanted to eat me raw.
His gaze was pinned on me, fire steaming out of it as he marched toward me. "What are you doing?" He asked again, his eyes narrowed at me.
"Nothing." I breathed, slamming the diary shut.
I should have locked the door before I started reading. I knew I didn't know what I was going to find in the diary but I should have known that Damon would find it intrusive that I touched his diary at all.
He glanced at the diary I slammed shut and hurriedly tried to hide, his lips morphing into an ugly scowl. "What is that?"
"It's nothing." I replied with a vigorous shake of my head, nervous and feeling sweat sluice down my forehead.
He let out a growl, his hands clenching with rage. "I swear, Nora, if you tell me nothing again, you are not going to like what I do."
I shivered slightly in fear, hating to deal with the angry beast that he had become. "I... I... I..." I was at a loss for words and sighed, my head bent in defeat.
He pulled me up with a hand, his movement swift that I gasped in a mix of fear and shock. "Did you read my diary, Nora?"
I knew I was going to sign my death warrant if I confessed the truth. I searched his eyes and noticed what it was that he was afraid I had seen.
"I didn't read your diary, Damon." I lied as I stared at him directly, hoping that he would believe me.
"What then were you doing with it?" He asked, his gaze straying directly to the diary lying on the bed.
I needed to come up with an excuse quick.
"I was bored after changing into your pajamas—"
His expression became fiercer at the reminder of me in his pajamas. His eyes darkened as he stared at me.
"You should have come to the living room if you were bored." He interrupted me. "My mum would have been pleased to entertain you."
"I wanted to know what you were like as a child." I continued.
"I told you not to be curious about me." He hissed, his grip on my wrist hardening.
"You told me not to question you, you didn't say I couldn't find other means to know about you."
He hissed at my logic. "You don't have to know about me."
"I'm curious about the man I'm married to." I said. "Falsely." I quickly added when his eyes turned to granite as he glared at me.
"Don't tell me you started to wonder if I'm a bad man after signing the contract and getting your first pay? What a perfectly security-conscious lady you are." He taunted.
"I knew you aren't a good man when I signed the contract," I scoffed. "I just wanted to know more of the man you are."
"So you read my diary?"
"No, I didn't. I just started reading when you walked in and haven't gotten past the first few pages."
"How few is few?"
"The first two pages." I said, shocking myself with how smooth my lie was.
Way to go, Nora. By the time I'd lived with Damon for two months, I would be eligible for an award at the college of lies and deceit.
"You didn't read anything there?" He asked, needing to confirm what he wanted to hear.
"I thought I already told you that." I sighed. "Is there something I shouldn't read there?" I goaded him.
"Just answer the question, Nora." He growled.
"I didn't read anything there."
He thought he subtly did it but I noticed his relieved sigh. He released me suddenly and I stumbled, gasping as I bounced on the bed. He leaned forward and I thought he was about to help me up and apologize, and my heart started kicking in my chest at the thought of that happening.
I watched as he picked the diary instead, shoved it into his suit, and walked out of the room, his strides full of hurry and restrained anger.
That blasted man. I should have known that he wasn't going to care about me.
He needed some manners. A lot of it.
He popped his head back into the room just as I was about to stand up and I went still, wondering if he was about to rebuke me again.
"The rain has stopped. Change and let's go home." He growled and slammed the door as he left, his anger freezing me to the bones.
