Chapter 15 The 'Loving' Husband

Nora's POV
The party was a success. For me though, because Damon had something else to say about it. I didn't get called out as being an imposter and that was success enough for me.
If only Damon agreed the party was a success as I did.
"What a waste of my time." Damon groaned for the fifth time that night during our drive home.
"It will be better next time." I said, trying to assure him and hoped that he would stop talking.
He hadn't stopped lamenting and filling my ears with woes. I was tired but didn't know how to tell him not to stop complaining as I didn't want to set him off.
"I don't have a party planned for the next two weeks." He scowled. "When is the next time going to be?" He asked, freezing me with a glare.
I went mute, my mind going blank at the intensity of his anger. I shrugged and looked out the window, busying myself with staring at the moving cars and hoped that we got home soon.
Realizing that I had given up on him, he snorted and turned to Hart. "What is my schedule like?"
Hart didn't look back or pause before rattling off Damon's busy schedule like it was his name.
Damon's scowl went deeper. "I guess I don't have a chance to redeem the error tonight."
"There will be another chance, boss." Hart consoled me.
"When will that be?" Damon hissed. "I didn't go to that party to smile at a bunch of gentlemen and clink glasses with them. I went there to network, Hart. That is what businessmen do. Tell me why they moved away from me the moment I was about to talk business with me. Some of them didn't even glance at me and walked away the moment I started to approach them. One would have thought that death was on their trail."
Hart let out a heavy sigh and shook his head without a word.
Damon continued anyway. "They didn't have any issue chuckling with me. They didn't have any issue talking to me about their wives. They didn't have any issue talking about their funny experiences during the week. Why did they not want to talk business with me when they were all there for the same thing?"
Hart shrugged, letting out another sigh. "I have no idea, boss."
"And you said no one is out to sabotage me?"
Sabotage? My ears flicked at the mention of the word. Did this have to do with the documents Sasha stole or there was something else involved?
I hoped he found Sasha so his business wouldn't go down because of the documents but I didn't want to be thrown out of his house, back to Mark's reach.
I wondered who his enemies were and how powerful they were to influence people against him.
I wondered if things were really going haywire for him or he was only going through a broken phase and going paranoid.
I wanted to ask but kept quiet as I remembered his rule not to be bothered with anything going on in his life. I had already broken a rule tonight, I didn't want to find out what he was going to do to me if I broke another.
"I don't think anyone is out to get you, boss." Hart said. "Who would dare to? You are Damon Bennett." He said, appealing to Damon's already oversized ego.
Damon snorted and looked out the window, not comforted by Hart's flattery.
He didn't say a word till we got home. Not that I had anything to say to him anyway.
"We are home, boss." Hart announced as he parked.
Damon stepped out of the car without a word and marched toward the house, his anger evident in every step.
"Thank you, Hart." I said before stepping out of the car.
"You are welcome, madam. Have a good night's rest." He nodded.
I sighed as I walked toward my bedroom, clutching my purse to hide how rattled I was. If Damon's business was being sabotaged, I couldn't help thinking of what that meant for me.
Would he still need a fake wife?
Would he still be able to pay me?
What would be my fate if he threw me out into the streets because he didn't need me anymore?
Would I go back home?
Would I have to go back to Mark?
He would definitely kill me.
Ah. Damon's business better survive or I was doomed.
Despite being warned that I shouldn't concern myself with his business, I couldn't help myself.
Lord, please help him. Lord, please help us.
I didn't pray often but that night I kept praying for Damon till sleep closed my eyes and saved me from an impending headache.
