It's 5.30 in the evening and Aria still has a few more hours to go home. She can barely feel her arms and legs.
She stayed inside the restroom for a bit.
For someone so petite, it is amazing how she can carry patients twice her size.
One hundred and fifty centimetres tall, and forty seven kilograms.
Practically a baby.
People called her ‘Hulk’ for a reason, huh?
Her back cracked as she stretched. Suddenly, the air turned cold. She closed her eyes.
“I thought I told you no peeking?”
She looked up, just to see hair hung over the door, crimson bulging eyes staring at her immensely.
“Dont give me that look, or I won't get you your makeup set!”
The ghost lady suddenly turned pretty.
Unlike the others, Lena could talk. Other ghosts would stare or show her what to do, some also tease.
Maybe because she had been a ghost for a long time.
Breaking news. Ghosts evolve too.
“You used to scream when I did that.”
Aria scoffed. “An old trick grew on me.”
Lena died inside the same cubicle. Her boyfriend killed her after forcing her to have an abortion.
The case was closed as fast as it was opened.
The police just ruled it as botched illegal abortion caused by overdose of illegal abortion pills.
As time passed, she recalled what happened. But not the living.
It will forever stay unresolved.
Forgotten.
Cold case.
“You could just burn the picture. I showed you the makeup set. It's just so pretty.”
Aria scoffed. “I don't even have time to poop, now you want me to burn the hospital?”
Lena laughed. “Come on, help me. It gets boring with the old set. I need new shades.”
Lena was pretty, tall and a chatterbox. It's a pity that she had to go in a horrific way.
“Dont ghosts like…go away? I mean if not, they would become grudgeful and bad.”
Lena sighed. “We had choices. Sort of.” She looked at her red nails.
“And I chose not to.” Looking proud with her choice.
Aria pouted. “So, you want to stay here? Forever?”
“The rules say, one needs to relive her day of death if she chose for revenge. But if she chose not to, she can keep living as she wanted, where she wanted and when.”
Aria frowned. “What a weird rule. Who came up with that?”
Lena leaned closer to Aria’s face. “Reapers?”
Aria laughed. “Yeah, right.”
But Lena was not laughing.
“So, you’re saying…all these ghosts, they chose to stay here? Willingly?"
Lena nodded. “They know and they stay.”
Aria fell silent. That is sad.
“But can you like…go out? Like somewhere else.”
Lena shook her head, playing with her long luscious hair.
“We have to stay within the place we were last seen alive.”
Aria pouted. “So many rules.”
Just then she heard footsteps outside. “Aria, you in here? Dr Kang called for you.”
Her eyes widened, Lena merely smiled teasingly.
“Have fun getting nagged.”
Aria pointed her finger at Lena’s face. “No makeup set for you!” She whispered.
.
.
“Miss Kang, I thought you would be living inside the damn restroom.”
Aria came out, bowed to the said doctor, smiling shyly.
“I am really sorry, Dr Kang. Bad stomachache.”
She rolled her eyes. “Room number three needed her blood drawn.”
Aria nodded, jotted it down her notes.
“Room four needed the dosage changed. From 10ml to 5ml daily for now.”
Aria nodded. She took points and listened tentatively.
“Anyway, Dr. Kim’s son is coming tomorrow. He will be one of the senior residents in general.”
Aria nodded.
“I have to warn you.”
Aria looked at the taller figure.
“He can be a little fussy. And annoying.”
Aria smiled. “Dr. Kang.”
She tilted her brows.
“Everyone here is annoying. Just saying.”
Dr. Kang froze for a second before she laughed.
“This Dr.Kim is beyond all of us. I assure you that.”
Dr. Kang walked away. Aria studied her notes and went to freshen her face a little before that. She walked back inside the restroom.
“Who is Dr. Kim?”
Lena whispered to Aria’s ears, made her scream.
“Fuck! Lena!”
Lena laughed. “I still got it!”
“You are such a gossip.”
“Tell me if he is gorgeous.” Lena rolled her hair.
“Like me.”
.
.
It's finally 9 and she finishes the day. She was already sitting at the cafe down the hospital building, waiting for her hot flat white. Well, it was for Madam Jina at home. And a piece of carrot cake.
Other ghosts just needed something to be burned.
But Madam Jina…she wanted the real one. She didn't want the burned piece of paper for offering.
She would stare at the cake and coffee.
Her death was pretty tragic too.
She was poisoned by her best friend who gave her the cake. She took a bite and she didn't get to drink her latte before she was gone.
It was her birthday. All she wanted was a warm latte and rest. The cake was a gift. Also the reason she was no longer human.
“Miss Aria!” The barista called out her name, and she gladly walked to the front.
Just then someone bumped into her, knocking her flat on the ground.
She hissed, her back felt like it was split into two.
What kind of building just hit me?
She looked up and the man just scoffed, looking at her like she was some kind of an ant.
“Watch it, kid.”
He walked away. His steps feel heavy and he leaves.. Not even looking back. And not even one simple ‘sorry’.
Kid?
She looked around. I don’t see any kids here. She stood up, fixing her clothes, and walked to the counter.
“Did he just call me ‘kid’?”
She asked the barista. He just laughed. “I think so, Miss Aria.”
That son of a bitch!
