Tables that Turn
Kaya’s POV
"Kaya, Isn’t it?" Azian asked me. My eyes fluttered up to him, feeling enchanted by them, my heart beating softly within its cage. He was really talking to me, like the flesh. He really knew who I was, he knew my name.
I don’t know why these were the first thoughts that rummaged my brain. I was feeling nervous and my heart refused to ease itself and give me a break. My body stiffened and I knew there was no way to avoid him. It would be much too weird if I didn't look at him for the whole dinner much less say a word. I just had to keep reassuring myself that everything that had been happening the past two nights was not real, no matter how lifelike they had seemed
It had all been a dream. Nothing like that could happen in real life. My eyes steadied on that gorgeous face of his and watched as that faint familiar smirk appeared on his lips.
Almost like a taunt.
The moment I looked at him was like I was back to last night’s dream. I definitely captured him pretty well in my dreams, every feature was there, except those golden eyes that had been left exclusively for my dreams. In real life, he had his blue ones, deep as the ocean and as vast as the sky.
"Hi," I whispered back softly, my tone came out breathy and I felt like cringing. It was pathetic how I became a complete puddle in his eyes. My voice sounded so cute and innocent I didn't know why the hell it decided to betray me, but luckily neither he nor anyone else seemed to mind or notice. He stared at me for a second too long till he suddenly focused back on his precious Khloe.
My shoulders fell, looking away from the two of them and back to the empty plate in front of me.
When dinner began I felt like I didn't exist at all. Everything seemed to orbit around a golden couple of the table or so Stephanie called it. It was Khloe this, Azian did that, Stephanie did this and Dad was the one it was directed to. I played with my food not really having the appetite to consume anything more. I glanced over at Ally almost chuckling when I saw the state she was in.
Ally couldn't contain how bored she was at the moment and I caught her rolling her eyes here and there whenever another question was aimed at Khloe.
But honestly, the strange thing about it all is I didn’t mind.
I had nothing to say and I was sure my life wasn't half as exciting as Khloe was. I mean look at her friends, dating the hottest guy in school, sports, beauty...agh who cared what little Kaya did? Besides the last thing I wanted was attention.
"So Azian,” Stephanie began a glimmer in her eyes as she placed her elbow on the table, “Won’t you tell us how you and my darling Khloe met?" she asked, her tone seductive for a reason beyond me.
I dared to peak up at him knowing he should be looking at Stephanie now. He had taken off his dark shades and he looked much worn out. I honestly felt he didn't want to be here as well for a second when I saw his face-
"Uhmm-"
"Let me tell it," Khloe barged in, her hand grazing Azians arm. My eyes trailed over the action feeling a pit in my stomach, my gaze returning to my plate, pursing my lips as she talked.
She began with how their eyes met, how he had told her he liked and blah, blah, and blah-you wouldn't believe he had said all those things the first day he laid eyes on her and in the middle of the cafeteria for that matter! I never really believed in love at first sight, maybe once, but not now, and honestly neither should she.
I hope she knew she wasn't that special, did she know he had just kissed her “sister" a few minutes before?
I scoffed louder than I should have, causing all eyes on me, including Azians, drawing that attention I never wanted. My gaze trailed around the table, before diving back down my plate cringing at my action, looking back up again I coughed uncomfortably, " I'm sorry, I just need some water, I'll be right back,” I said my tone sounding not as laid back as I intended sounding a bit more spiteful.
Excusing myself, I drew out my chair walking into the Kitchen. I headed towards the fridge taking out a bottle of cold water, turning around just as Ally walked in and I handed her an extra bottle of water, watching as she took a seat by the island.
"Thanks for the excuse. It was so good I had to use it,” she muttered as she opened the bottle taking a sip
I nodded, “my pleasure.”
Ally chuckled at this placing the bottle down onto the counter, before looking back in the direction of the dining hall, “I did not think dinner would go like this,” she commented her tone defeated and dry, “firstly that Azian jerk shows up, everything all about Khloe and Stephanie is so self-centered,” she grumbled before turning back to me, “I’m so sorry Kaya, I shouldn’t have encouraged you to come.”
I managed a short smile, "It's fine, I knew what I was heading into. This isn't my first time,” I replied.
She nodded but I could still feel the pity in her eyes. After a few more minutes Ally stood up, handing me an empty water bottle which I disposed of together with mine.
“We should get back in there,” Ally sighed, turning around-
“Ally?”
She turned back unexpectedly. My eyebrows creased as I stuttered, “uh- c-can we switch seats?"
She furrowed her eyebrows at this, raising an eyebrow.
I sighed, "Azian is seated opposite me, and whenever he moves, and his leg unintentionally brushes mine. It’s not very comfortable-"
Ally’s eyes narrowed at me.
I sighed- ‘and...” I trailed off, “I can’t risk looking up and having our eyes lock, it’s too uncomfortable,” I confessed.
She smirked, her eyes shining “sure". I nodded allowing her to lead the way back to our cursed dinner.
We found our seats and this time I sat near my father and opposite Khloe.
My heart pounded softly as I looked at Khloe while she was talking because I could feel Azians eyes on me, burning holes in the side of my face.
I did not know-how. But I did.
***********
Dinner was a disaster.
I hated every minute of it. Stephanie had Khloe and Azian under her gaze like a hawk. It was truly uncomfortable I really wondered why I was ever invited. It seemed the conversation was flourishing wonderfully without Ally’s and I’s input except for the random questions Dad kept throwing at us once in a while.
I said an awkward goodbye to Dad when Aunt Lily came to pick us up. She had a few nasty words to say to my father, she gave a hard look and then at Stephanie, then a surprise that shifted into a disappointed look thrown at Azian before stomping off dragging Ally and me along with
"I'm glad I came out of that alive, no offense Kaya," Ally muttered as she did her seatbelt and Aunt pulled out of the gate.
"None taken," I replied with a grin as we sped away.
We dropped Ally off at home and I was more than glad to be in my own home. A house that actually felt like a home, not some random white house. Everything in Dad’s Villa just felt so grey cold, lifeless, and unlikeable.
Aunt Lily couldn't stop complaining about Liam or my father even after we had arrived home. I stretched in the kitchen taking out my phone, checking notifications as I headed out of the room. I was surprised to find about 4 missed calls from my mother and a few text messages.
"Mom was calling. I should call her back,” I informed Aunt Lily as I headed upstairs.
"Do you go telling her about your lunch with your father and Stephanie or she will kill me for allowing you to go there in the first place!" Aunt Lily warned.
“NOTED!” I yelled back down.
************************************
That night I decided to go to bed very early, after all the next day was a Monday and we all know how that goes. The least I could do for my body is waking up refreshed.
I tried my very best to sleep in a random position so I wouldn't be taken back to my stupid dream and have the displeasure of seeing him again. After seeing the two of them so close together, I wanted absolutely nothing to do with either of them.
I shut my eyes firmly waiting for sleep to take over. I woke up to the familiar rattle on my balcony, the shadowy figure forming a silhouette in the moonlight as I stared at my balcony door. I groaned throwing a mini tantrum.
This dream again?! Even when I wasn’t trying?
Nope, this time I didn't care and I was not going to play along. Yep, this time I was not opening nothin' no matter what. I threw the covers over my head and shut my eyes real tight. Counting imaginary sheep till the soft rattles stopped.
I sat up abruptly, noticing that the shadowy figure was gone. I bit my lip getting out of bed before moving to the door, opening it slightly, only to be met with nothing but air. Locking the doors I slid back to bed-
Agh well goodnight.
I flopped over and tried in vain to catch some sleep. And I did.
However even as I closed my eyes I couldn't help but feel like someone or something was watching me.
*********************
Walking through the halls I met up with a much drained-looking Ally, "well you look like shit" she greeted as I yawned, “happy Monday to you,” I replied blowing her an imaginary kids
She grinned, "Are you okay?" She asked, her tone becoming much more concerned. I side glanced her way with a deep sigh, "Yeah why?"
“Well, yesterday…”
"It's good. Like I said I'm used to it.”
She nodded, "Alright, I'll see you for our next class," she said as we split.
I nodded, walking through the crowd when my eyes caught a glimpse of the popular three, well technically they were now four and I couldn’t help my eye roll/
Who on earth is perfect every day? They seemed to be like models no matter what day no matter what season. Agh well screw them. Life just can’t be life without some kind of flaws.
I didn't bother to look at any of them any longer, my eyes shifted away from them looking straight down the hallway. When I finally got to my class I frowned when I saw someone I really did not want to see again.
Monday was really a headache.
Legion sat in my favorite seat with his usual jerky smirk. He was an ass and I was the unluckiest person on earth. I rolled my eyes trying to find any other empty seat, noting the fact that all the other boys seemed to be seated as far away from him as possible and the girls swooned but still maintaining good distance.
I had long ago stopped bothering about his off and on again class schedule. He could do whatever he wanted for all I cared. I realized no one could take him, not even me.
"Estheraï"
I closed my eyes leaning my head against the wall ignoring him. Hell, I wanted to ignore every single person here, I would much rather be alone. Yes, I was in that kind of mood.
I heard a chair scrape beside me and I wanted to punch his ass, obviously, no one knows what ‘leave me alone’ is in this stupid town.
I opened my eyes a fire burning within them, “how many times must I ask you to stay away?" I gritted out.
"This won't be your last I assure you," he replied still smirking.
"Legion. I don't want to talk to you,” I said firmly ignoring the knots in my stomach
His smile seemed to falter, before pulling closer, those silver eyes of his clouding in Smokey storm, “one chance"
"I said-"
"Let me explain myself, I just need one more chance Kaya, One chance and if I mess it up I won't bother you again, please."
He wasn't smirking not at all. Like he usually did. He looked me square in the eye his eyes a mist of an emotion I couldn’t quite understand, of desperation that melted his voice in such a way, Goosebumps formed on my skin. I tugged at my sleeve, thinking it through for a moment. He was bound to blow this chance after all. I slowly nodded and I relieved look spread on his features,
"Meet me by the JC after lunch,” he whispered as the teacher walked in.
I was still at a loss for words so I didn't reply, but I knew whatever reason he had should be a dang good one if he really wanted to even think about accepting his apology. I sighed looking back up at the teacher and I went through my classes, had one Ally, then it was lunch.
When we finished lunch Ally had to make a phone call so I decided to check out what Legion had to say. What had I left to lose?
I walked slowly towards the JC or in other words the ‘janitor’s closet.’ I hated this part of school because it was just so filthy. I knew a lot of nasty things have happened in there but I knew Legion wouldn't try to pull any of that on me unless he did and then I’d take out my handy little pepper spray.
I breathed out slowly noticing the empty halls. Taking a deep breath in, I walked towards the JC, opening it slipping in.
"You made it,"
I almost had a heart attack reaching out to switch on the light in this tony dark space. Legion stood there calmly. I looked him down refusing to admit to myself that he looked really good.
“This is ridiculous,” I muttered as I looked at the small space I had trapped myself in.
"It is," Legion replied glancing around. His grin alone sent butterflies to my stomach, "but I did say by the JC and not in it”
I frowned at his blatant joke, not at all in the mood to ‘laugh’ and I opted to turn away, it was a stupid idea to even accept coming here. He suddenly tugged at my arm, pulling me back roughly until I was flushed against him staring into those smoky eyes. After a few moments, he let go of my arm, taking a step back, and yet I still felt like there really was no space in this itty bitty closet. My heart was ramming against my chest and gosh he smelled so good.
He had given me my space but I couldn’t understand why I was angry he had pulled away from me, just like he did when I came to his castle of a house. The thought that he didn’t even like me echoed through me. I adjusted myself calmly trying not to think about it too much. Why would I care about that? Why did I care?
"I like you," he blurted out surprising me, my eyes flashing back to his, he looked at me for a moment resembling that of an uncertain little puppy.
My eyebrows furrowed a this, my tone calmer, “are you telling me that, or are you asking?” I asked softly failing to keep eye contact.
"I like you a lot Kaya," he repeated this time it was a solid statement, “I’m not really good with my feelings. I don't know how to...” He trailed off eyeing me as if wondering if he was making any sense or just embarrassing himself.
But I liked it, I liked hearing what he had to say and I liked that for the first time he looked unsure of himself.
“How to?" I asked slowly, prodding him to speak further ignoring the fluffy feeling filling inside me. I couldn't help the faint smile that found its way on my lips. I never really thought I would see Legion look like this, like a lost puppy.
"I don't how to show those feelings. I’m not-I’m not good at feelings." He paused breathing out, "I've never really done this before," he trailed off.
"You can't be serious,” I began though my tone was softer, “You have never told a girl you like her?" I asked raising an eyebrow, as cute as it sounded, what did he think I was. Born last night? A guy as unearthly hot, rich, and handsome as Legion had never really liked a girl?
I was right about to do a double-take but his next words startled me.
"Yes. I have never. I guess that's why am so bad at it...” He slowly looked up at me, “the other day. I just didn't want you getting too close. It’s not your fault and I’m sorry for pushing you away-"
“Sending me away is a better description of what you did,” I replied pursing my lips.
His gaze faltered and I could tell he was really struggling to find words. And I felt really bad for pushing him to do it. Wait, no I didn't.
I mean c’mon! Tell me which girl didn't like a hot boy telling her he's head over heels for her?!
He breathed out his shoulders dropping, “I must look like an idiot. I had one chance and I blew it" his features changed so drastically to anger I couldn't understand it. His look alone should have scared me but it actually made me grin. I grabbed my bag watching as he looked at me sorrowfully.
He seemed in pain. Oh, look how the tables have turned.
"No, Wait, I can do better," he pleaded as I held the door about to open it.
I opened the door slightly tuning back to look at his broken face. I was evil to actually feel some bit of power over it but I couldn’t hold in the fluffy feeling inside me for much I broke into a smile walking over and kissing him on the cheek, "No you did fine," I replied before I walked out of the JC.
I could almost feel him exploding with joy behind me.
Boys.
I walked into the hallway just as kids were filling in from lunch, my eyes scanning over the crowd for any signs of Ally, actually feeling light-hearted for once since this gloomy day had begun. My eyes caught a glimpse of the popular four coming down the hallway and I turned away once more, heading toward my locker. Ally would probably find me here faster. I sighed opening my locker door watching as a note floated out of it falling to the floor. My eyebrows creased, picking it up and turning it over, eyes scanning over the words.
LET ME IN TONIGHT.
My heart hammered against my chest eyes widening at the note, quickly turning, and eyes searched for Azian who had stopped a few feet away deeply conversing in a chat with Edwin.
He had not even bothered to look away. My heart fell breathing out lowly as I looked down at the note in my hand. Flipping it over on both sides my eyes widened when I found nothing on it, it was just a plain piece of paper.
I shook my head crumpling the paper walking away from my locker mindlessly- I must be going crazy.
************
Azian glanced back over his shoulder watching her retreating figure. He hoped Alpha was satisfied now.
"She's seen it?" Edwin asked subtly turning and watching the girl leave disposing of the note in the nearby bin.
Azian looked down at his guardian nodding with a short sigh, "we can only hope she lets me in tonight"
Edwin shook his head muttering something underneath his breath.
"What did you say?" Azian asked watching Edwin curiously.
Edwin closed his locker, "Nothing. Let’s just head to class".
Azian paused watching Edwin disappear into the crowd before following him, he knew exactly what Edwin had said.Download Novelah App
