Chapter 15

“Darkness listens to no one.” Kael’s warning echoed inside Alessia’s mind the very instant her fingers touched the surface of the Shadow Well.
The darkness responded immediately. It rose. Slowly at first—like ink swirling through cold water then violently.
A surge of black-violet Luminous energy shot upward, wrapping around her wrist. Alessia gasped.
“K-Kael—”Seraphine cried out from behind her. “Princess!”
The darkness tightened, pulling her closer to the Well. Dark coldness seeped into her skin, creeping up her arm like frost.
Her heartbeat thundered in her ears. She tried to pull away—the shadows yanked her forward. Her knees hit the ground.
Priam’s voice remained calm. “Do not interfere.”
“Father!” Eryx stepped forward in alarm.
Priam raised one hand—just one—and the guards blocked the prince instantly.
Kael remained still but every muscle in his body tensed like a drawn bow. Alessia’s breath grew shallow.
The shadows crawled up her forearm, wrapping it completely. Her vision blurred at the edges. ‘It’s pulling me under!’
The nobles murmured, “She can’t handle Caligo!”
 “Dangerous!”
 “She will lose control!”
 “She wasn’t meant to survive!”
Their voices blended with Luna’s memories.
 “She’s useless.”
 “Nobody wants her here.”
 “She’s empty.”
Darkness coiled inside her chest. Maybe the darkness is right. ‘Maybe I don’t deserve this—and then—a voice cut through the spiral.
“Alessia.” Kael’s voice, deep and calm.
Her vision snapped upward toward him. He hadn’t moved from his place in the back of the hall, but his masked face was turned fully toward her.
“You are stronger than what pulls you,” he said quietly. “Stop letting fear decide your fate.”
Her breath rigged. Strong enough? Was she?
Seraphine’s trembling voice followed, breaking through the murmurs, “Princess… remember Aqua. Remember Ignis. Remember wind. You can control this.”
“And remember Lux,” Eryx added, voice tight with concern. “Your light is stronger than they think.”
She swallowed hard. Her core pulsed in response. Lux, a soft glow, quiet but steady. Caligo, a deep rumble, cold and vast. Two halves. Two worlds. Two girls, Luna and Alessia.
Alessia inhaled sharply, forcing herself to steady her breath. “I’m not afraid of you,” she whispered to the shadows clinging to her.
The darkness pulsed violently—as if offended then Caligo whispered back.
She didn’t hear words but she felt something—a cold, instinctive tug inside her. A connection.
It wasn’t trying to destroy her. It was trying to mirror her. Fear makes it violent. Calm gives it shape. This wasn’t an enemy. This was her shadow. Her pain, memories, and past.
She wasn’t fighting the darkness—she was fighting herself.
Alessia exhaled slowly. “Let go of me,” she murmured—not as a command, but as acceptance.
The shadow halted then softened. It loosened around her wrist—just enough for her to breathe.
A gasp echoed across the hall. Varian whispered, “She’s stabilizing it!”
Priam’s jaw tightened slightly. Ariadne leaned forward, fascinated.
Cassian scowled. “Impossible—she shouldn’t be able to bend Caligo like that!”
Alessia lifted her left hand slowly. The darkness followed her silver eyes glowed faintly as she let the cold pulse of Caligo rise—not wildly, not violently, but as a slow tide.
Then—it emerged. A wraith. It rose from the shadow.
Well, like a creature formed from the deepest part of night. Its body was a mass of swirling black Luminous with hints of purple. It had no legs—only drifting vapor. Its arms elongated into sharp wisps, and its face…No mouth. No eyes. Only two hollow glowing points staring directly at her.
Alessia trembled. “It’s looking at me,” she whispered.
“Do not look away,” Kael said sharply. “You will lose control.”
She forced herself to stay focused. The wraith drifted forward. The nobles flinched. Several gasped. One woman fainted.
Priam did not move. Ariadne’s fingers tightened around the edge of her seat. Eryx’s sword hand flexed reflexively.
Seraphine’s lips trembled in fear. Kael’s knuckles whitened against his own wrist.
The wraith hovered inches from Alessia’s face. Cold seeped into her bones. Her breath hitched—but she didn’t step back.
“Guide it,” Priam commanded. His voice was ice.
Alessia nodded but her heart raced. “I—I don’t know how…” she whispered.
Kael answered from across the hall. “Do not tell it what to do,” he said. “Show it.”
She inhaled shakily. Her right hand rose—Lux flickered at her fingertips, faint but present. Her left hand—Caligo pulsed heavy and deep. Light and shadow. One guiding, one responding.
She stepped backward slowly. The wraith followed her movement exactly. Gasps erupted for the nth time.
 “She’s copying its pace!”
 “No, it copies her!”
 “She’s guiding it!”
Alessia extended her left arm to the side. The wraith mirrored her motion. She lowered her arm. It sank.
She lifted her hand upward. It rose. She stepped forward. It drifted forward. A cool shock of realization ran down Alessia’s spine.
 “I-I’m controlling it,” she whispered.
Kael’s voice lowered. “You are guiding it—not controlling. Remember that.”
Seraphine let out a shaky breath. Eryx exhaled in disbelief.
Master Darius clasped a trembling hand over his heart. Cassian clenched his jaw so tightly a muscle in his cheek twitched.
Priam watched unblinking. A well of emotion surged in Alessia’s chest -fear, pride, rage, relief, and all of it. And Caligo reflected it.
Her shadow was not an enemy. It was part of her.
She lifted her hand one final time—and the wraith drifted gracefully back to the Shadow Well.
Then it dissolved into black mist. Silence flooded the hall. No one breathed. No one blinked.
Alessia lowered her shaking arms. Her legs trembled beneath her weight. She was dizzy, exhausted and drained but standing. Still standing.
Priam finally spoke. His voice rang through the hall with absolute authority. “Caligo,” he declared slowly, “accepted.”
 The hall erupted.
 “She passed all six!”
 “Unheard of!”
 “Impossible!”
“No child has ever did it!”
 “She is… something else.”
Cassian slammed his fist against his chair arm. “This is rigged. She wasn’t supposed to passed this test!”
“Silence.” Priam’s voice cut him down instantly. Cassian froze.
The Emperor rose from his seat, cloak shifting around him like a dark tide. He stepped toward the center of the arena.
Alessia’s breath caught. She bowed shakily as he approached.
Priam studied her—hard, sharp, and calculating not as a father as an Emperor evaluating a threat… or a weapon.
His deep eyes flicked to her trembling hands. Then to the faint patterns of Lux still shimmering on her skin.
Then to the shadow that was still there, barely hanging on to her left wrist.
Dual elements. Light and darkness. Six Trials passed .Perfect succession capability.
Priam’s voice lowered into something dangerous. “Alessia Keren Endymion…” She swallowed hard.
He continued—“You have proven yourself worthy of the imperial line.”
A stunned hush fell across the hall even Cassian can’t move.
Priam raised his voice slightly. “From this day forward,” he said, “you stand as Second Successor to the Throne.”
Shock crashed across the nobles. Second Successor. She is officially recognized.
Eryx’s eyes widened—astonishment and pride swirling together. Seraphine covered her mouth in disbelief. Kael bowed his head slightly—not to the Emperor, but to Alessia.
Priam’s next words were colder. “But understand this…”His gaze hardened. “your power is dangerous.”
She stiffened. “It must be watched.” Her heart cracked. “You will train under the closest supervision.” Priam paused, eyes narrowing. “One misstep… and this recognition will be removed.”
He turned away just like that. As if her worth was conditional, fragile and replaceable.
Kael stepped forward immediately as the nobles erupted into uproar. Eryx rushed to her side.
Seraphine ran toward the center of the hall.
Alessia’s knees trembled but she didn’t fall. She lifted her chin slowly—and whispered to herself, “I will not break.”
