Chapter 137
“Fall back!” Kael’s voice cracked like a whip the moment the Arcana sentinel dragged its full arm through the fractured archway. Blackstone dust showered the corridor as ancient runes burst apart. The creature’s limb—long, sleek, carved from a single piece of obsidian and threaded with pale-blue veins—scraped across the floor with a metallic shriek.
Lyra’s guards leapt back, halberds raised.
“It’s moving! IT’S MOVING—” Rian wailed.
Selene’s eyes gleamed like a predator’s. “Oh, it’s very awake.”
The sentinel’s fingers—seven of them, jointed twice each—stretched outward, each tip glowing with soft cyan flame.
And every glowing tip pointed at Alessia.
Kael’s blade was in front of her face in a heartbeat. “Not a chance.”
But Alessia stepped past the blade. Past Kael. Straight towards the sentinel. “Alessia!” he snarled, reaching for her.
She didn’t stop. Sorrel whimpered from behind Seraphine. “It’s scary…”
Seraphine swallowed hard. “That is… not how guardians are supposed to look.”
Eryx positioned himself between Rian and danger. “Ready.”
Ianthe cracked her knuckles, grinning fiercely. “Finally, something to punch.”
Kade trembled, the resonance brace glowing wildly. “Don’t attack it—it’s reading the air. It’s searching for a recognition pattern.”
“It’s searching for her,” Selene corrected.
Alessia halted three steps from the sentinel’s outstretched hand. The creature’s carved arm dropped lower, lowering itself until its massive palm hovered at her height.
Lyra stiffened. “It’s bowing.”
Kael looked murderous. “No. It’s luring her. It wants her close.”
“No,” Alessia murmured. “It’s testing me.”
Her silver-violet luminousness flickered around her hands, swirling between her fingers like mist and starlight. The sigil on her collarbone pulsed in answer—three threads glowing:
Solaris gold.
Lunaris silver.
Noctis is black-violet.
The sentinel froze.
Then it lowered its head through the crack, revealing its face—or what resembled one.
A smooth obsidian mask.
Six luminous eye markings.
No mouth.
No nose.
A symbol carved in the centre.
Alessia inhaled sharply. The symbol was the same one burnt into the deepest layer of the memory core.
She extended her hand. Kael lunged to stop her, but the sentinel’s palm glowed, expanding a soft barrier around Alessia alone, pushing Kael back gently but firmly.
“What?!” Kael snarled, slamming his shoulder against the invisible ward. “Alessia!”
“I’m fine,” she said calmly.
“You are not!”
The sentinel’s voice resonated through stone and air—not spoken but felt.
—Convergence detected.
—Designation: Heir of Arcana.
—Threshold recognised.
The corridor froze in stunned silence. Rian fainted on the spot again.
Ianthe caught him by the hood. “Stay with us, scholar.”
Lyra’s mouth fell open. “What… did it call you?”
Kael’s jaw tightened enough to crack a tooth. “Wrong.”
Selene stepped forward, fascinated. “Very, very interesting.”
Alessia kept her hand steady in front of the sentinel’s glowing palm. “You recognise the sigil,” she said.
—Correct.
—Triad inheritance.
—Unprecedented.
—Acceptable.
The sentinel leant closer. Kael slammed a fist against the barrier. “BACK AWAY FROM HER!”
The sentinel ignored him.
—Statement: The architect breached the lower seal.
—Statement: The Gate work has begun.
—Directive: Remove the corruption.
—Directive: Prevent ascension repeat.
Alessia’s eyes narrowed. “You want my help?”
—Affirmation.
Lyra stared at the sentinel, rigid with shock. “Why—why does this ancient Arcana guardian know your mark?”
Alessia didn’t answer. Instead, she asked the sentinel, “Where is the breach core?”
The sentinel’s left forearm opened—stone unfolding like petals. A map projected from the veins of its wrist: the layout of the palace foundations. Tunnels. Chambers. Three luminous rings spiralling beneath the throne room.
At the centre was a dark pulse.
Kade leant forward. “That’s it. That’s where he’s planting the gate anchor.”
“Then we break it,” Ianthe said.
Selene shook her head. “Not before we understand it. Arcana structures collapse if dismantled incorrectly. The city could fall into the cavern.”
Lyra paled. “Then we must stop him before he finishes integrating.”
Kael hissed, “Alessia. Step away from that thing.”
Alessia pressed her palm against the sentinel’s.
Her luminousness met its ancient mana.
For a heartbeat—a flash. A memory not hers.
The cavern.
The rings.
A throne of obsidian dust.
A man—tall, silver-haired, with arcane runes burning across his skin.
The architect, but his eyes weren’t cruel in this memory. They were tired, lonely, and angry.
—We were meant for more.
The image shattered. “Alessia!” Kael grabbed her shoulders the moment the barrier fell. She stumbled once—just once—before he steadied her.
“I’m fine,” she said.
“You keep saying that," Kael muttered, voice cracking. “One day you won’t be.”
She looked up at him. “I have you.”
His expression faltered. He looked like he couldn’t decide whether to be furious, relieved, touched, or all three.
Selene rolled her eyes. “Oh, for stars’ sake. Later. Romance later.”
Rian groaned faintly from Ianthe’s shoulder. “Are they almost done dying?”
“No,” Ianthe said proudly.
The sentinel withdrew its hand. The crack widened further, revealing a massive obsidian arm and shoulder.
—Directive: Proceed.
—Guardian escort: Activated.
Lyra staggered. “Esc—escort?”
Selene burst into a grin. “Oh, how beautiful. We have our own Arcana tank.”
Kael glared. “It is not coming.”
The sentinel’s head tilted towards him.
—Shadowborn recognised.
— Designation: Protector.
—Accepted.
“Accepted?!” Kael barked. “I don’t need your approval!”
“Kael,” Alessia said quietly. “We need him.”
His jaw clenched hard, but when she stepped towards the breach, he moved with her always.
Sorrel tugged at Seraphine’s sleeve. “Is the stone man a friend?”
Seraphine’s voice shook. “I… don’t know.”
“No,” Kael muttered.
“Yes,” Alessia said.
Both glared at each other. Ianthe snorted. “Let the Empress decide, shadow-boy.”
Kael turned so fast she took half a step back. “Call me that again,” he said, dead calm.
Ianthe grinned. “Make me.”
“Enough,” Alessia said. Her voice cut through everything. Kael’s shadows immediately settled. Ianthe lowered her hands.
Selene smirked. “She controls you beautifully.”
Kael ignored her. Alessia stepped towards Lyra. “We’re going below.”
Lyra swallowed. “There are things down there older than Noctis.”
“Yes.”
“You may wake more sentinels.”
“Yes.”
“You may not return.”
“No,” Kael said sharply.
Alessia’s voice remained steady. “We’re stopping him.”
Lyra bowed her head briefly. “Then I will show the path.”
Kael moved to Alessia’s left. The sentinel moved to her right.
Selene, Ianthe, Eryx, Kade, Seraphine, Sorrel, and Rian—everyone formed behind.
Alessia stared into the widening crack. Beyond it – a spiralling descent into darkness, lined with ancient symbols, glowing faintly with a heartbeat of arcana, waiting, calling, threatening, and promising.
Kael whispered at her side, “We end this.”
“No,” she said softly.
She stepped forward. “We begin.” And the catacombs swallowed them whole.Download Novelah App
