Chapter 24:

The next day came slowly, and for the first time in weeks, Deniel woke up to a quiet, peaceful morning. No battles to fight, no monsters to face—just the familiar sound of birds chirping outside his window. He blinked at the ceiling for a moment, half-expecting to hear the loud roar of a monster or feel the rush of adrenaline from another mission. But instead, everything was still.
Deniel sat up in bed, rubbing his eyes. It felt strange not having to worry about what would come next. The past few weeks had been nonstop action, always preparing for the next fight. Now that it was over, it felt like he didn’t know what to do with himself.
He glanced at the glowing bag the man had given him, sitting on his desk in the corner of his room. The four yellow glowing circles were still there, though their light had dimmed after Valtor’s defeat. Deniel wasn’t sure if the bag still held any power, but he figured it wouldn’t hurt to keep it close, just in case.
“Two weeks,” Deniel muttered to himself, remembering the man’s words. “We had two weeks to save the world.”
And they did it. They really did it.
Deniel stood up and stretched, feeling the stiffness in his muscles from all the fighting. His whole body ached, but it was a good kind of ache—the kind that reminded him of everything they had accomplished.
Downstairs, he could hear his mom in the kitchen, humming to herself as she prepared breakfast. The smell of cooking vegetables filled the air, and for a moment, it almost felt like nothing had changed. Deniel smiled, feeling a bit of warmth in his chest. Maybe things could go back to normal after all.
He got dressed and headed downstairs, the creaky steps reminding him of how simple life had been before all of this. When he reached the kitchen, his mom looked up and smiled.
“Good morning, Deniel! You’re up early,” she said, placing a plate of scrambled eggs and vegetables on the table.
“Yeah,” Deniel replied, sitting down at the table. “Just thought I’d get an early start.”
His mom gave him a curious look, but didn’t ask any questions. She had always been understanding like that, never pushing him to talk if he wasn’t ready. Deniel appreciated that about her, especially now.
As he ate, he couldn’t help but think about everything that had happened. It felt like a dream, like something out of a storybook. He had fought monsters, teamed up with his best friends, and saved the world. But now that it was all over, it felt almost unreal.
“I’m heading back to the market today,” his mom said, breaking Deniel’s thoughts. “Could use your help if you’re up for it.”
Deniel looked up from his plate. The market. It had been weeks since he had helped out there, and the thought of going back to his old routine felt...strange. But maybe it was exactly what he needed. Something familiar, something normal.
“Sure, I’ll help,” Deniel said, giving his mom a small smile.
She smiled back. “I appreciate it, Deniel. It’ll be nice to have you there again.”
After breakfast, Deniel helped his mom load up the vegetables for the market. As they worked, he couldn’t stop thinking about his friends. Were they feeling the same way? Did they feel as strange about going back to normal life as he did? He hadn’t talked to them since they parted ways yesterday, and a part of him wondered if they were all struggling with the same thoughts.
Once everything was ready, Deniel and his mom headed to the market. The sun was shining brightly, and the streets were already starting to fill with people going about their day. It was a far cry from the dark, dangerous world of the Undergrowth Kingdom, but Deniel welcomed the change.
As they set up their vegetable stall, Deniel glanced around the market. It was the same as always—people shopping, vendors calling out to customers, kids running around playing. But for Deniel, it all felt different. He wasn’t the same person he had been before. The market seemed smaller now, less important compared to the battles he had fought and the world he had helped save.
“Deniel!” a familiar voice called out.
Deniel turned to see Milo jogging over, a wide grin on his face. “I figured I’d find you here!”
“Milo!” Deniel greeted him with a smile, feeling a bit of relief wash over him. “What’s up?”
Milo leaned against the stall, still grinning. “Not much. Just, you know, enjoying the peace and quiet now that we’re not fighting monsters.”
Deniel chuckled. “Yeah, it’s weird, right?”
“Weird doesn’t even begin to cover it,” Milo said with a laugh. “I woke up this morning expecting to have to punch something, but nope. Just me and my mom’s cooking.”
Deniel nodded. “Same here. It feels...strange going back to normal.”
“Tell me about it,” Milo agreed. “But hey, we did it. We saved the world, man! That’s something to be proud of.”
Deniel smiled. “Yeah, it is.”
As they talked, Jess and Aris showed up, both of them looking just as out of place in the normal world as Deniel felt. They exchanged greetings, and before long, the four of them were standing together at the vegetable stall, laughing and joking like they always had.
But underneath the laughter, Deniel could tell that they were all feeling the same thing—the same uncertainty about what came next. They had saved the world, but now they had to figure out how to live in it again.
“I guess this is the part where we try to go back to being regular kids,” Aris said, his tone half-joking, half-serious.
“Yeah, but we’re not regular kids anymore,” Jess pointed out. “Not after everything we’ve been through.”
Deniel nodded. “We’ve changed. But maybe that’s not a bad thing.”
The group fell silent for a moment, each of them lost in their own thoughts. The market buzzed around them, people going about their normal lives, completely unaware of the battle that had taken place to keep them safe.
Finally, Milo broke the silence. “You know, even if things are different now, I’m glad we did it together. We made a pretty awesome team.”
Deniel smiled. “Yeah, we did.”
As the morning wore on, the group stuck together, helping out at the market and catching up after everything that had happened. They didn’t talk much about the battles or the monsters. Instead, they focused on the present—on being together, on enjoying the peace they had fought so hard for.
And though the future was uncertain, Deniel knew one thing for sure: whatever came next, they would face it together.
