Chapter 2 The Draw

Alice's heart nearly stopped as her phone buzzed in her hand. For a moment, she didn’t dare look at the screen, as though checking the notification might break the spell of anticipation she had been wrapped in all day. Her mind raced with possibilities.
Was it him?
With a deep breath, she finally turned her phone over. There it was: Akira has replied to your message.
Her pulse quickened as she opened the message, the anticipation building until she saw his words on the screen.
“Thank you, Alice! I really appreciate it. Glad you enjoyed the game :)”
Her breath caught. He had used her name. It was such a simple thing, but it felt like more—like the beginning of something. Her fingers hovered over the screen as she tried to figure out how to respond. What could she say that wouldn’t come across as too eager or too casual? But the more she thought about it, the more her nerves buzzed with excitement.
She quickly typed out a reply: “Of course! You played an amazing match. Your focus and skill are incredible.”
She hesitated for a second before hitting send, wondering if it sounded too over the top. Would he even care? Her mind spun with second guesses, but the moment passed, and her phone was quiet again.
After sending her reply, Alice’s heart raced as she stared at the screen, waiting for another response. Was she being too forward? Would he even bother replying again? She had no idea what to expect.
Minutes passed, and Alice forced herself to put her phone down, determined not to obsess over the conversation. But even as she tried to distract herself with homework, her thoughts kept drifting back to Akira. She wondered what he was like outside of the gaming world, what kind of life he led when the screens were off. Did he enjoy talking to his fans? Or was it just part of the job?
Another buzz.
Her heart leapt, and she scrambled for her phone.
“Thanks again! Do you play Valorant too?”
Her breath hitched. He was asking about her. She wasn’t just another random fan now—he wanted to know more. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard as she tried to figure out the best way to respond. She played Valorant, sure, but she wasn’t anywhere near his level. How could she phrase it without sounding too awkward?
Finally, she typed: “Yeah, I do! I’m not as good as you, but I love playing.”
After hitting send, she quickly realized she sounded too modest. Would he think she was just trying to be humble? She bit her lip, her anxiety bubbling up again.
The reply came almost instantly: “That’s awesome! It’s all about having fun, right? Maybe we could play together sometime :) I’d be happy to show you a few tricks.”
Alice’s heart skipped a beat. Play together? She could hardly believe it. Her mind whirled with a million thoughts, and for a moment, she just stared at the message. Akira, the professional Valorant player she’d admired from afar, was offering to play with her.
Quickly, before she could overthink it, she typed back: “I’d love that! I could definitely use some tips from a pro.”
Her smile widened as she hit send, her excitement now too much to contain. What was happening? It felt unreal—like a dream she didn’t want to wake up from.
The rest of the day passed in a blur. Every time Alice picked up her phone, she couldn’t help but glance at the conversation, re-reading the messages and letting herself smile at each one. She knew she was getting too wrapped up in it, but she couldn’t stop. Akira’s messages felt like a direct connection to a world she had only ever admired from a distance, and now, somehow, she was part of it.
Later that evening, Akira posted an update on his social media—another tournament win, of course. Alice stared at the post, her heart doing flips as she considered replying again. Would it be weird to keep messaging him after every win? Would he even notice her among all the other replies?
But her fingers moved before her mind could catch up. She quickly typed: “Congrats on the win again, Akira! You were amazing as always :)”
This time, the reply came almost immediately.
“Thank you, Alice :) You’re too kind. I always appreciate your support!”
Her heart fluttered again. His words felt genuine, personal, as though she was more than just another follower in the crowd. She stared at the screen for a moment, her fingers hovering over the keyboard. Should she say something more?
Without thinking too much, she typed: “You win the game every time, but you’ve also won my heart ;)”
It was meant to be playful, a joke—but as soon as she hit send, she froze. What was she doing? Was that too much?
Seconds later, her phone buzzed again.
“Haha, wow. You’re smooth with it ;)”
Alice let out a breath she didn’t realize she had been holding. She laughed, feeling a rush of relief and excitement.
“First time I’ve tried a line like that, to be honest. Guess it worked?”
“It definitely worked,” Akira replied. “You’ve definitely caught my eye.”
Her heart raced, her hands trembling as she read his response. What was happening? Their banter, their connection—it felt like more than just a casual conversation. And for the first time, Alice let herself wonder: Could this be something real?
The following days passed in a haze of excitement. Alice spent her time between classes checking her phone for updates from Akira, watching his matches, and messaging him whenever she found an opportunity. The conversations were brief, but they were enough to keep her smiling through even the longest lectures.
Each time Akira replied, her heart would leap in her chest, her stomach doing somersaults. His words were always light-hearted, playful, but there was something beneath the surface—something that made her feel like they were connecting in a way that went beyond just casual banter.
And then, one evening, after another of Akira’s matches, he sent her a message that made her stop in her tracks.
“By the way, I feel like I’m getting lucky because of your good luck messages. You’re my lucky charm, Alice :)”
She stared at the message, her heart pounding in her chest. Lucky charm? Was he flirting with her? The thought sent a thrill through her, and she quickly typed back, her fingers trembling.
“Haha, I guess I’ll have to keep sending them, then! Don’t want to jinx your winning streak ;)”
Akira replied almost instantly.
“Yes, please! If you stop, I’m pretty sure I’ll lose. Can’t risk it ;).”
Alice laughed out loud, feeling a rush of giddiness that she hadn’t felt in a long time. How had this happened? How had a simple message turned into this? She had started following Akira on a whim, and now here they were, texting like old friends—maybe even something more.
As the days turned into weeks, their conversations became more frequent. Alice found herself thinking about Akira constantly, replaying their messages in her mind, wondering what he would say next. There was something about him that drew her in, something that made her feel like she was getting to know him in a way that went beyond just the game.
They talked about more than just Valorant now—about their daily lives, their routines, even their favorite foods and hobbies. The connection between them felt easy, natural, as though they had known each other for years instead of just weeks.
One night, after an especially intense match, Akira sent her a message that made her heart skip a beat.
“I’ve never felt this comfortable talking to someone so quickly before. It feels like I’ve known you for a long time.”
Alice stared at the message, her heart pounding. She felt the same way, but seeing him put it into words made it feel more real, more significant. She quickly typed back, her fingers trembling.
“I know what you mean. It’s weird, right? Like we just clicked.”
Akira’s reply came almost immediately.
“Yeah, exactly. It’s nice :)”
Alice smiled, her heart fluttering as she read his words. It was more than nice—it was something she hadn’t felt in a long time. And as she lay in bed that night, her phone clutched in her hand, she couldn’t help but wonder where this was all headed.
