Chapter 4 Levelling Up

The days following their first phone call passed in a whirlwind of excitement and anticipation. For Alice, the conversations with Akira had become the highlight of her day. It wasn’t just the texting anymore; it was the late-night calls, the shared jokes, and the easy banter that made her feel closer to him. What had once been a distant admiration for a professional gamer had quickly turned into something more personal—more intimate.
Each evening, they would talk, sometimes for hours, about everything and nothing. Akira would tell her about his day—how his training sessions had gone, the pressures of upcoming tournaments, and his plans for the next stream. In turn, Alice shared stories from her classes, her struggles with assignments, and the everyday moments that made up her university life. It was as though they had slipped into a comfortable routine, one that neither of them wanted to break.
But beneath the surface of their growing connection, there was an undercurrent of something more. Something unspoken but undeniably real. Every time Akira’s name flashed on Alice’s phone, her heart would skip a beat. And every time they spoke, there was a moment, a flicker of hesitation, as though both of them were on the edge of saying something more—something that would shift the dynamic between them even further.
It wasn’t long before Akira suggested they level up their connection in a new way.
One evening, after a particularly exhausting day for both of them, Akira texted her with a simple question: “You free tonight? Want to hop on a game of Valorant with me?”
Alice stared at the message, her heart pounding. They had talked about playing together before, but this felt different. It wasn’t just about gaming anymore—it felt like a step toward something deeper, like an invitation into his world. She quickly replied, trying to keep her nerves in check.
“I’d love to! But just a heads-up—I’m not exactly a pro like you ;)”
Akira’s reply was immediate, a playful reassurance that made her smile. “Hey, it’s not about being a pro. It’s about having fun. Besides, I’ll carry you if I have to!”
Alice laughed softly at his words, her excitement bubbling over. She opened her laptop and logged into the game, her hands trembling slightly as she prepared to join Akira for their first match together. This was something new, something different from their usual conversations. But more than anything, it was something that brought them closer in a way Alice hadn’t expected.
As they loaded into the game, Akira’s voice came through her headset, calm and steady. “Ready, Alice?”
“Ready as I’ll ever be,” she replied, trying to keep the nervous tremor out of her voice.
For the first few rounds, Alice felt the weight of her own inexperience, especially compared to Akira’s flawless gameplay. But Akira was patient, guiding her through the matches with gentle instructions and encouragement. Whenever she made a mistake, he’d chuckle and reassure her that she was doing great. And when she landed a good shot, he’d cheer her on, making her heart swell with pride.
“You’re better than you give yourself credit for,” Akira said after one particularly good play. “You’ve got potential.”
Alice’s cheeks flushed, even though he couldn’t see her. “Thanks, but I think I’ve still got a long way to go.”
“We all do,” Akira replied, his tone warm and encouraging. “But you’re levelling up fast.”
They played together for hours, their laughter and conversation flowing easily as they worked together in the game. For Alice, it felt like more than just gaming—it was a shared experience, one that deepened their connection in a way that texting or even phone calls hadn’t. She found herself glancing at her screen during the matches, watching Akira’s character as he moved with precision and skill, all the while feeling a sense of admiration that went far beyond his abilities as a player.
As the night wore on, they eventually finished their last match, both of them too exhausted to continue. But before they logged off, Akira’s voice came through the headset one last time.
“Hey, Alice?”
“Yeah?”
“I had a great time tonight. We should do this more often.”
Alice smiled, her heart fluttering at his words. “I’d like that.”
After they said their goodnights, Alice found herself lying in bed, replaying the evening in her mind. It wasn’t just the game that had made the night special—it was the way Akira had made her feel, the way they had connected through every shared laugh, every bit of teasing banter. It felt like they were building something, step by step, and with each new level they reached, Alice felt herself growing more and more attached to him.
The next day, things continued to shift between them. Akira began following Alice on all her social media platforms, and soon enough, they exchanged phone numbers. What had once been messages through a gaming app was now full-on texting and sharing bits of their lives outside of gaming.
Their conversations became even more personal, touching on things beyond the digital world. Akira opened up about his life—how he had fallen into professional gaming, the sacrifices he had made along the way, and the pressure that came with being at the top of his field. Alice, in turn, shared more about her own life, her dreams, and her struggles balancing school with everything else.
Their connection felt stronger than ever. Every time Alice saw a message from Akira, her heart skipped a beat. There was something in the way he spoke to her now—more than just the playful banter of before. It was deeper, more thoughtful. And every time she responded, she could feel herself being drawn closer to him.
One evening, after they had spent hours gaming and chatting, Akira sent her a message that made her heart race.
“You know, I’ve never really connected with anyone like this before. It’s kind of crazy how close we’ve gotten in such a short time.”
Alice’s fingers trembled as she typed back. “I feel the same way. It’s like... we just click.”
“Exactly,” Akira replied. “And it’s not just about the game. It’s about everything. I feel like we’re levelling up together.”
Alice’s heart swelled at his words. It wasn’t just about the game anymore. It was about them—their connection, their bond, and the way they were growing closer with every conversation, every shared experience.
And for the first time, Alice allowed herself to wonder what might come next. Where this connection, this relationship, could lead. Because in her heart, she knew one thing for certain:
They weren’t just players in a game anymore. They were something more.
But despite their deepening connection, there was still an air of mystery around Akira. He was open about some things—his career, his day-to-day—but Alice couldn’t shake the feeling that there were pieces of his life that he was holding back. Sometimes, during their late-night conversations, she would catch a hint of something—hesitation in his voice, or a pause before he answered certain questions. It wasn’t that he was hiding anything from her, exactly. It just felt like there was more to his story that he wasn’t ready to share.
Alice didn’t push him on it. She didn’t want to ruin the delicate balance they had created. But the curiosity gnawed at her, especially on the nights when Akira would suddenly have to cut their conversation short. He’d always offer a reason—something about training or an early stream—but there was something in his voice that made Alice wonder if that was the full truth.
Still, she told herself it didn’t matter. They were growing closer with each passing day, and she didn’t want to risk ruining that by overthinking things. Akira had opened up to her in ways she hadn’t expected, and she wanted to give him the same trust and patience that he had given her.
And so, they continued to "level up," their connection deepening with every conversation, every match they played together. Alice found herself looking forward to their time together more than anything else in her day. Whether it was texting him between classes or gaming together late into the night, Akira had become an integral part of her life.
A few weeks after their first gaming session together, something unexpected happened.
It was a quiet Saturday morning when Alice received a text from Akira.
“Hey, Alice. I was thinking... how would you feel about coming to one of my tournaments? I’ve got one coming up next weekend, and I’d love for you to be there.”
Alice’s heart skipped a beat. She had watched Akira’s tournaments online before, but the idea of being there in person, of seeing him in his element, was both thrilling and terrifying. She quickly typed back.
“Really? You’d want me to be there?”
Akira’s reply came almost immediately. “Of course. You’re part of my life now, Alice. I’d love for you to see what it’s really like in person.”
Alice stared at the message, her heart pounding. This was something big—a step toward something more real than she had ever expected. She took a deep breath before replying.
“I’d love to be there. I can’t wait.”
The rest of the week flew by in a blur of excitement and nerves. Alice couldn’t stop thinking about the upcoming tournament, about seeing Akira in person for the first time. What would it be like? Would it feel as natural as their conversations did online? Would he be different in person? A million questions ran through her mind, but one thing remained constant: her excitement.
Finally, the day of the tournament arrived. Alice dressed carefully, wanting to strike the right balance between casual and confident. As she made her way to the event, her nerves buzzed with anticipation. She had watched Akira play online countless times, but this—this was different.
When she arrived at the venue, the atmosphere was electric. The energy of the crowd, the buzz of excitement—it was overwhelming in the best way possible. Alice found her seat, her eyes scanning the stage for any sign of Akira.
And then, there he was.
He looked just like he did on screen, but seeing him in person, surrounded by the lights and the noise of the tournament, was something else entirely. Alice’s heart raced as she watched him prepare for the match, his focus intense as always.
The game began, and Alice found herself on the edge of her seat, her heart pounding with every move Akira made. It was one thing to watch him online, but being here, in the middle of the action, made everything feel more real. She could feel the tension in the air, the pressure of the competition. But through it all, Akira remained calm, focused—just like always.
When the match ended, with Akira’s team taking the victory, the crowd erupted into cheers. Alice felt a surge of pride swell in her chest as she watched him bask in the glory of the win. She had seen him win countless times before, but this felt different. This felt personal.
After the match, Alice waited near the players' lounge, her nerves kicking back in. What would she say? How would it feel to finally meet him face-to-face?
And then, he appeared.
Akira spotted her immediately, a grin spreading across his face as he made his way toward her. Alice’s heart skipped a beat as he approached, his presence overwhelming in the best way possible.
“Hey, Alice,” he said, his voice warm and familiar. “It’s good to finally see you in person.”
Alice smiled, her nerves melting away as she looked up at him. “Yeah, it’s... really good to see you too.”
In that moment, standing there together in the aftermath of his victory, Alice knew one thing for sure: they weren’t just players in a game anymore.
They were something more.
