Dad?

“ You remind me of the boy I once was—so innocent, so pure. And since I couldn’t stay that way, I promise to love and protect you until you’re strong enough to stand on your own. ”
---
— Cecile —
“That’s your baby, Cecile,” Dr. Anna Silvester said with a warm smile, pointing at the monitor.
“Wow…” I whispered, my voice barely audible. My eyes were glued to the screen. The black-and-white image wasn’t clear, but it was enough—a tiny, growing reminder of a love I never imagined I’d feel.
“He’s so cool,” Joel said, chuckling. I turned to him, surprised by how soft and passionate he’d become. I never thought he’d be this excited about a child, yet here he was, absolutely enamored.
“I’ll leave you two alone,” the doctor said kindly before walking out, leaving us in a quiet moment that felt both surreal and grounding.
“It feels unreal,” I murmured, my gaze still fixed on the monitor.
“Yeah…” Joel’s voice trailed off, thick with emotion.
---
That night, as we cuddled on the loveseat, I finally worked up the courage to ask the question that had been on my mind.
“Why a baby boy?” I whispered, trying to keep my tone light.
“A boy…” Joel repeated softly, his eyes distant, as if reaching into memories long buried. “Because he reminds me of myself—young, bright, and full of potential.”
I placed my hand over his, offering silent comfort as his words grew heavier.
“My dad… he wasn’t there to shield me from the pain, the cruelty. But I swear, Cecile, I’ll protect our son—and our future daughter—with everything I have. I’ll make sure they feel safe and loved until they can stand tall on their own. And even then, I’ll always be there, watching over them.”
“I know you will, Joel,” I said, squeezing his hand. “I believe in you.”
His gaze softened, and for a moment, it was just us—no fears, no doubts, only the promise of a love we were creating together.
“And let’s not forget,” I teased, breaking the intensity, “tomorrow’s my graduation, and the day after is your best friend’s wedding.”
“How could I ever forget?” he said, laughing, his joy contagious.
As I leaned into his warmth, I marveled at how far we’d come. Just a few years ago, I thought my heart would never heal, that life had nothing left to offer me. But I was wrong—so gloriously wrong.
Now, it feels like I’m living my miracle, standing on the other side of the pain, where joy and fulfillment finally reside.
Indeed, God makes all things beautiful in His time. And even though I’d wavered in faith after losing Celine, I couldn’t deny it now: God’s love had been there all along, steady and immense.
---
— Joel —
‘Days turned into weeks,
Weeks into months,
Months into years.
And here you are—
Standing.
A graduate,
At the top of your class.’
Her voice echoed through the hall, each word sinking into me like a balm.
‘The days of despair,
The nights of anguish,
When it felt like the world
Was against you—
They’re behind you now, my love.’
She paused, her eyes locking with mine.
‘You are the strongest person
I’ve ever known.
Your story, though marked
By pain, loss, and fear,
Is one of resilience.
Look at you now—
Radiant, brilliant, and whole.’
Her words flowed like poetry, each one a reminder of how far we’d come.
‘You remind me of the three
Hebrew boys,
Thrown into the furnace.
And when they emerged,
There wasn’t even a trace
Of what they’d endured.
And so it is with you—
Only distant memories remain,
Slowly fading as we create
New ones—
Beautiful, priceless memories
That will last a lifetime.’
She smiled as she concluded, her voice steady yet brimming with emotion.
‘I’m proud of you, Joel.
Proud of the man you’ve
become.
I wish you a future
Filled with joy, gratitude,
And accomplishments.
Shine brightly, love,
Like the sun you’ve always been.’
As she stepped off the stage, I couldn’t wait—I met her halfway, pulling her into my arms as the applause thundered around us.
The world melted away. There was no audience, no noise—just her. My best friend, my wife, the mother of our child.
“I love you, Joli,” I whispered into her hair.
“I love you more,” she said with a playful grin, her voice like music to my ears.
“Thank you for being the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”
“And thank you, Joel, for giving me a love I never thought I deserved.”
---
Later, as we took photos outside, she stole my graduation gown and slipped it on, laughing and claiming she was a graduate too—because what’s mine is hers.
It was a moment I’d never forget, one of countless beautiful memories we’d continue to make.
Love truly is a beautiful thing.
