Chapter 2: The Mission.

As we walked side by side, our boots echoing off the walls, Fred turned to me with a mischievous grin spreading across his face. His eyes sparkled with amusement, and his voice was laced with sarcasm. "Hey, buddy, I guess we're in a competition now - who's going to die first in the arms of those lovely zombies?"
I rolled my eyes, chuckling despite myself. "Oh, great, just what I needed. A death race with my best friend."
Fred's laughter echoed through the corridor, a contagious sound that drew a smile from me. "Well, someone's got to go first. Might as well be me, right? I mean, I'm the older one, the wiser one... the more experienced one in getting our butts kicked by the undead."
I playfully shoved him, our shoulders bumping together. "You're just trying to distract me from the fact that we're heading into a zombie-infested hellhole."
Fred's grin grew wider. "Hey, it's working, isn't it? You're laughing, I'm laughing... we're both laughing our way to our impending doom."
Our banter continued, a lighthearted exchange that belied the gravity of our situation. We knew the risks, the dangers that awaited us in the city. But in that moment, we chose to face it with humor, with camaraderie, and with a deep-seated trust in each other. We were more than just comrades - we were brothers, united in our quest to survive the un-survivable.
As we prepared for our mission, I took a moment to carefully pack the few essential items I needed. My hand lingered over the familiar shape of my mother's photograph, a treasured possession I always carried with me. I gazed at her warm smile, her eyes shining with love and encouragement. I could almost hear her gentle voice, urging me to stay safe, to come back home.
With a deep breath, I carefully placed the photo in my pocket, the worn edges folding into a comforting square shape against my leg. It was a tangible connection to her, a reminder of the love and strength that fueled my determination to survive.
I patted the pocket, feeling the slight bulge of the photo, and nodded to myself. For her, I had to make it through this. For her, I had to come back alive. The thought galvanized my resolve, steeling me for the challenges ahead.
Fred noticed my momentary pause, his eyes flicking to the pocket where the photo lay hidden. He knew the significance, the emotional weight it carried. His expression softened, a silent understanding passing between us. We were in this together, for our own reasons, for our own loved ones. We were a team, united in our quest to overcome the unrelenting horrors of the apocalyptic city.
As we finished gearing up, the commander appeared, a solemn expression on his face. He handed us each a sleek, black tag with our squad name and designation etched on it. I took mine, my heart swelling with pride as I read the inscription: "Dragon 7". Fred's tag read "Dragon 5".
The commander's eyes locked onto ours, his gaze intense. "Listen up, Dragons. I've got something you need to hear." He produced a small device from his pocket, a voice recorder. "This message was sent by one of the X12 team members. It's...unsettling."
He pressed play, and a static-filled voice filled the room. "This is X12-Delta. We've got a situation here...there's more going on than we thought. We're not just fighting zombies...we're..." The voice cut off abruptly, replaced by a chilling scream and the sound of scuffling.
The recorder beeped, indicating the end of the message. The room fell silent, the weight of the incomplete message hanging heavy in the air. It was clear that the soldier had been attacked mid-recording, leaving us with more questions than answers.
The commander's face was grim. "That message was sent two hours before X12 went dark. We've had no contact since. You Dragons are our last hope. Uncover what's happening in that city, and get out alive."
Fred and I exchanged a tense glance, our minds racing with the implications. What were we up against? What had happened to X12? And what lay in store for us in that forsaken city?
As we gathered in the mess hall, the commander's words echoed in our minds: "This might be your last chance to enjoy a hearty meal, so make the most of it." The table before us was a testament to his sincerity - a sumptuous spread of eggs, bacon, sausages, pancakes, and fresh fruit, all expertly prepared by the base's culinary team.
The aroma of sizzling meat and freshly brewed coffee filled the air, tantalizing our taste buds and stirring our appetites. Fred and I exchanged a look of anticipation, our exhaustion momentarily forgotten in the face of this gastronomic delight.
We dug in with gusto, savoring each bite as if it might be our last. The flavors danced on our tongues - the richness of the eggs, the smokiness of the bacon, the sweetness of the pancakes. It was a culinary symphony, a fitting farewell feast for eight soldiers about to embark on a perilous mission.
As we ate, the tension in the room dissipated, replaced by a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose. We were no longer just two soldiers; we were Dragon 5 and Dragon 7, united in our quest to uncover the secrets of the apocalyptic city.
The commander watched us with a knowing smile, his eyes gleaming with a mix of pride and concern. He knew the risks we were about to face, the uncertainties that lay ahead. But in this moment, he wanted us to forget all that, to simply enjoy the pleasure of a fine meal, and the company of our fellow soldiers.
As we finished our meal, our plates clean and our bellies full, we pushed back our chairs and let out a collective sigh of satisfaction. It was a moment of peace, a fleeting respite from the chaos that awaited us. And as we stood up, our eyes met the commander's, our faces set with determination. We were ready to face whatever lay ahead, our hearts and bellies full, our spirits unbroken.
