I held up my hand, my fingers spread wide, and then began to count down, my eyes locked onto Dragon 2's. Five... four... three... two... one. With each count, I gestured to him to come over to our cover, my movements deliberate and clear. Dragon 2's eyes were wide with fear, his face pale and sweaty. He nodded slightly, his weapon still clutched in his hand, as he prepared to make a dash for our position. I could see the terror in his eyes, the uncertainty that threatened to paralyze him. But I believed in him. I knew he could do this. I gave him a reassuring nod, my eyes locked onto his, and mouthed the words "You got this". With a deep breath, Dragon 2 burst out from his cover, his legs pumping furiously as he sprinted across the open ground. Bullets whizzed past him, the sound of gunfire echoing through the air, but he didn't falter. He kept his eyes fixed on me, his face set in a determined grimace. I watched in tense silence, my heart pounding in my chest, as he ran towards us. It felt like an eternity, the seconds ticking by like hours, but finally, he reached our cover, his body crashing against the wall as he took shelter beside me. " I made it, I made it, I fucking made it." Dragon 2 said, panting hard. I let out a sigh of relief, my hand clapping him on the back in a reassuring gesture. "Good job, Dragon 2," I whispered, my voice low and urgent. "You made it. Now let's get Dragon 3 and get out of here." I held up my hand, my palm facing outwards, and then gestured to Dragon 2 and Dragon 3 to stay put, my eyes locked onto theirs in a silent signal to remain patient and stay calm. My gaze then shifted to Dragon 2, my eyebrows furrowed in a questioning expression. "Where's Dragon 1?" I whispered urgently, my voice barely audible over the sound of gunfire and chaos around us. "Has he been hit?" Dragon 2's eyes dropped, his face pale and somber. He nodded slightly, his lips parting as if to speak, but no words came out. I knew that look, that gesture. It was a look of sorrow, of loss, of defeat. My heart sank, my gut wrenching with a sense of dread. I knew what he was going to say, what he was trying to tell me. I didn't want to hear it, didn't want to believe it. But I had to know. "Where is he?" I pressed, my voice firmer now, my eyes boring into Dragon 2's. "Is he...?" Dragon 2's eyes flicked up to mine, and he nodded again, his voice barely above a whisper. "He's one of the men on the floor, the ones who aren't moving. I saw him go down, saw him get hit. He's...he's gone." The words hit me like a punch to the gut, knocking the wind out of me. Dragon 1, our team leader, our friend, our brother - gone. Shot dead, lying motionless on the floor. I felt a wave of grief wash over me, a sense of loss and despair that threatened to overwhelm me. But I knew I couldn't give in to it, not now. I had to stay focused, had to keep my team safe. I turned to Dragon 2 and Dragon 3, my eyes locking onto theirs with a serious expression. "I need you both to wait here, to hold position and keep cover," I whispered urgently, my voice low and steady. "I'm going to move out, to check on Dragon 5 and 6's status. They were last seen taking cover on the left side of the street. I need to know if they're still alive, if they're still with us." I paused, my eyes scanning the area, making sure we were still secure. "I'll be quick, I'll be careful. But I need you both to hold here, to keep our six clear. Can I count on you?" Dragon 2 nodded, his face set in a determined grimace. "Got it, got it. We'll hold here, we'll keep cover." Dragon 3 nodded as well, his eyes locked onto mine. "Be careful, man. We don't know what's out there." I nodded, my hand on my weapon. "I will, I will. Just keep our backs covered." With that, I moved out, my weapon at the ready. I sprinted across the street, my eyes scanning the area, my senses on high alert. I reached the left side of the street, my heart pounding in my chest. And then, I saw them. Dragon 5 and 6, both taking cover behind a nearby dumpster. They were alive, they were safe. I breathed a sigh of relief, my eyes locking onto theirs. "Dragon 5, Dragon 6, it's me!" I whispered, my voice barely audible over the sound of gunfire. "I'm here, I'm with you. We need to get out of here, we need to regroup with the others." They nodded, their faces set in determined expressions. And together, we moved out, our weapons at the ready, our eyes scanning the area for any sign of danger. As I led Dragon 5 and 6 back to the spot where Dragon 2 and 3 were waiting, my heart swelled with relief and gratitude. I rushed towards Dragon 5, my best friend Fred, and embraced him tightly, my arms wrapping around him like a vice. "Fred, oh man, I'm so glad you're alive!" I whispered, my voice choked with emotion. "I was so worried about you, about both of you." Fred hugged me back, his grip just as tight. "We're good, we're good," he whispered back. "We made it, we're together again." I pulled back, my eyes scanning his face, his body, making sure he was indeed unharmed. Then, I turned to Dragon 6, and nodded at him, my eyes locking onto his. "We all made it," I said, my voice filled with relief. "We're all together now." I looked around at my team, my brothers, my friends. We were all here, all accounted for. And in that moment, I knew we would be okay. We would make it through this, together. "Listen up, guys," I said, my voice low and steady. "We need to sit tight, to wait here until nightfall. We can't move, can't risk it. But we'll be okay, we'll make it out of here together." I gestured to the floor, and we all sat down, our backs against the wall, our weapons still at the ready. But our eyes, our faces, they were relaxed, they were calm. We knew we had each other, and that was all that mattered. We sat there in silence, our breathing slow and steady, our hearts still racing from the adrenaline. But we were together, and that was all that mattered. We would wait here, until nightfall, until it was safe to move. And then, we would escape, we would make our way out of our enemies shooting range. Together.
