Chapter 3 When Faith Is Doubted

This morning, Agus and Haris went home together after listening to a routine lecture after dawn. The two of them looked engrossed in talking about the speaker of the lecture. Ustad Hasmul, as usual he was the speaker every morning after the Fajr prayer.
"Gus, how come you weren't sleepy while listening to the lecture?" Haris chirped suddenly while on his way home from the mosque.
"Well, you also really focus on listening to lectures," said Agus angrily.
"Hey, why me! I'm just amazed by Ustadz Hasan, his lectures can fascinate us like that, huh."
"Wow, you're dangerous, Ris. I already have a wife and children!" Agus joked.
"It's not like that, you bastard, it's impossible for me to like Ustadz Hasan. Just like his son."
"Hush. Just watch out, yes, you. Syarifah has become my target. Don't just be silly!" Agus said, warning that Haris would no longer expect Syarifah.
Similar incidents did not happen only once or twice. Almost every day, the topic of their conversation is fighting over the daughter of Ustadz Hasan, who is kind and virtuous.
"Hmm, it's up to you, Gus… Gus. Not necessarily, Syarifah wants to be with you," said Haris, by lifting the corners of his lips, then sticking out his tongue.
Agus also hit Haris on the arm because he felt that Haris had ridiculed him.
"That's your mouth, I took a long time to recite it," said Agus with a sour and fierce face.
Meanwhile, Haris just held back his laughter when he saw Agus' face getting more and more annoyed.
Along the way, they kept talking about Syarifah and her family.
Unbeknownst to them, Irma had been following them for a few minutes. As usual, Irma had just returned from her night club. And of course, Irma was very upset to hear about Syarifah, who was busy being praised by Agus and Haris. In contrast to her all day long, the neighbors gossip around her all day long.
"Heh... how rude, Gus! But, yes, if you look around, Mbak Syarifah is very similar to Mrs. Halimah, right, Gus," said Haris.
"Yes, it's his son," said Agus sarcastically.
"But it's true, really. From the way she talks, her beauty, her smile can be like that. Both are good too." Agus continued his sentence, which of course made Irma even more heated by listening to it.

"If I'm with him, I can definitely improve the offspring." Haris said confidently.
Instantly, Agus looked cynically at Haris. Then, Haris who realized his words, spontaneously gave a two-finger gesture.
"Not repairing offspring, but destroying offspring."
"You are reckless!" Haris cursed, equipped with a light punch on Agus' left arm.
A line later, they continued to talk about it. Until finally, they arrived at their respective homes. Without realizing the slightest that there was Irma who had been cut to his heart listening to their conversation.
"Ah, everyone just likes Mbak Syarifah!" cursed Irma who ten seconds later walked quickly to her house.

Arriving at home, Agus was surprised by the arrival of his parents, who had lived in Jakarta for a long time. With a face that was still a little surprised, Agus drew closer to his parents.
"Since when did you become a righteous person," said Mrs. Hartini—Agus's mother—without further ado.
Instead of asking how Agus was doing, Mrs. Hartini said some unpleasant words. However, Agus as his son is not surprised by such questions. His mother had always doubted Agus' abilities, or whatever it was he was doing. He also always compares Agus with his brother, Fajar Prasetyo. The man who has always been used as a benchmark for success by Mrs. Hartini.
"Mom, Dad." Agus greeted while he alternately greeted Mom and Dad alternately.
"Until what time was it? Is the job done? Agus asked later, without answering his mother's question.
A rhetorical question. Actually, Agus also didn't intend to ask questions, but gave a subtle satire to his parents, who were always busy with all his work. Until one day, Agus chose to live with Grandpa Hadi—his mother's father—who had died two years ago.
"Your mother wants to come back here. Miss you, he said," replied Mr. Ferdian Prasetyo, Agus' papa.
"Yes, mama wants to fast here, Gus."
"But how come it was so sudden, didn't tell Agus first."
"You don't like Mama and Papa coming back here?" His mother's question certainly made Agus feel uncomfortable.

"It's not like that, Mom. Aren't Mama and Papa used to Agus' absence? The presence or absence of Agus has never meant anything to Mom and Dad," answered Agus with a stupid face.
Mr. Fikri and Mrs. Hartini just sighed roughly. Maybe it was their fault that they never paid more attention to Agus. In stark contrast to her brother, who always has a place in the hearts of both of them.
They did not want to continue the conversation, which seemed to only open old wounds for Agus. Mr. Fikri and Mrs. Hartini immediately entered without being invited by Agus. They understand why Agus acts like that.

"Hey, Mbak Syarifah!"
Suddenly, Irma's screams were heard in a mosque where Syarifah used to teach the Koran. He seemed to be holding back such great anger. You can see from his face that it looks like it's already blazing red.
The children who were learning the Koran were surprised to hear Irma's screams.
"Irma… why are you screaming? This is a place of worship, you know," said Syarifah softly and calmly.
Unexpectedly, with full emotion, Irma immediately threw her right hand to Syarifah's cheek.
Even Syarifah, who knew nothing about Irma's current problem, could only wince in pain. It is undeniable that, of course Irma's slap was very hard.
"Because of Mbak Syarifah. My father always compares Irma with Mbak. You are always praised by everyone. As for Irma? Just being ridiculed here and there," said Irma, still with increasingly burning emotions.
Syarifah, who heard this statement, immediately shed tears. In fact, during this time, Syarifah never had any intention of seeking face or praise from anyone. Because he realized that the compliment didn't mean much to him. As long as he teaches and does good, his intention is only one: to seek the pleasure of Allah.
"You are outrageous, Irma. Let us go home!"
Suddenly, Mr.Hartono and Ustad Hasmul were running over to Irma and Syarifah. Pak Hartono had expected that his daughter would definitely approach Syarifah after their quarrel at home earlier.
"Why? Do you want to defend Mbak Syarifah again?" Irma asked groggily.
Pak Hartono is certainly very ashamed of Irma's behavior.
While Pak Hartono calmed Irma and rushed to take her home, Syarifah was still seen sobbing and sobbing in Ustad Hasmul's arms. His heart was devastated by all the words Irma.

"Sharifah… you are a strong child. Be patient, yes," whispered Ustad Hasmul soothingly.
Syarifah was still crying in the arms of Ustad Hasmul. He also understood how Syarifah felt.
"Kids... the Koran will be continued tomorrow, won't it. Syarifah wants to go home first," said Ustad Hasmul, who realized that there were children who were afraid to witness a fight that they shouldn't be watching.
To be continue ....
