Chapter 68 The Night Unleashed

Chapter: The Silver Howl
The final notes of the music faded into the grand hall's murmuring silence, leaving only the echo of the dance that had just ended. Siera stood at the center, still catching her breath from the carefully measured steps she had shared with King Gwi. Tension lingered between them—unspoken words hanging like mist.
A sudden hush passed through the room, like a collective breath held in suspense. The chandelier above flickered once, then steadied. A faint breeze—odd for an enclosed hall—brushed through the silk drapes
Suddenly, clap. Then another. Slow, loud claps rang out from the staircase that overlooked the ballroom floor.
“Well,” a voice drawled, rich with sarcasm and charm. “Such a lively celebration for such... uncertain times.”
All heads turned toward the figure standing at the top of the steps—tall, striking, clad in an immaculate dark green coat with silver embroidery that shimmered like moonlight. His golden eyes gleamed with a dangerous glint, and a smirk twisted his lips as he continued his theatrical applause. It was Lycaon.
Siera’s breath hitched. Gwi’s hand instinctively moved near his sword.
A wave of confusion rippled through the crowd. Nobles exchanged wary glances, their murmurs growing louder as they instinctively recoiled from the stranger’s chilling presence. The man radiated danger—his confidence, his smirk, the unsettling calm in his golden gaze.
Eros narrowed his eyes, stepping smoothly and deliberately in front of Siera—a silent shield rising between her and the approaching danger. His motion was neither rushed nor loud, but unmistakably protective. Ryu’s carefree smile faltered, slowly replaced by a rare grimness that settled over his features like a gathering storm.
Beside them, Key reached down gently, taking the small hands of her twins, Gene and Dane. Her touch was firm, reassuring. The children, sensing the sudden change in the air, clung to her side, their wide eyes searching the room as if trying to make sense of the silent dread curling around them like an unseen mist.
Across the hall, Zaltarish, who had only moments before been dancing gracefully with Queen Ylira, now paused mid-motion. He moved with elegant caution, rising slightly as if responding to a silent call in the wind. His expression turned solemn—less like a predator and more like a sentinel of the ancient woods, steady and watchful as a storm gathered. Queen Ylira, attuned to his every breath, placed a calming hand on his arm. Her gaze swept over the ballroom, her brow furrowed with quiet, rising dread.
Lysandra tilted her head, arching a brow—not in fear, but in intrigue, as though watching an unexpected performance unfold. At the far end of the hall, Lord Maren narrowed his eyes, the corners of his mouth twitching into a sneer. "Another performer?" he scoffed to no one in particular, raising his goblet slightly as if to toast the absurdity. But as the stranger descended, and the very air grew heavier, Maren’s grip faltered. The goblet trembled in his hand. A bead of sweat rolled down his temple. Then—crack—glass met marble, shattering in a sharp, accusing ring.
Lycaon’s golden gaze slid toward the sound, cold and unblinking. It lingered on Lord Maren just long enough to silence the lingering scoff in his throat, freezing the jest before it could form. Maren swallowed hard, his earlier mockery shriveling in the weight of that look.
"Apologies,” Lycaon said, descending slowly, his gaze fixed on Siera, still meters away from her and Gwi. “I couldn’t resist dropping by. Your Majesty,” he bowed to Siera with a flourish, his voice smooth as silk, “your beauty is only rivaled by your bravery. Truly radiant tonight."
Gwi’s body went taut, his muscles coiling with unease. There was something about the way Lycaon spoke—too smooth, too intimate, as if he had some twisted claim over Siera. Gwi hated the sound of his voice when it addressed her like that, a thread of possessiveness woven into the silk of his tone.
Siera did not flinch. She stood tall despite the tension thickening the air, her posture straight and commanding, the faint gleam of the ballroom lights catching the silver threadwork of her gown. Her chin lifted slightly, a quiet defiance in her bearing. The hush in the hall amplified her voice as she spoke, cool and unwavering.
“Who are you?”
Lycaon’s smirk deepened, but for a fleeting moment, his eyes flicked back to Siera as if weighing her question—an acknowledgment without an answer, his silence far more pointed than words. Then, with deliberate slowness, he turned to Gwi.
“We meet again, King Gwi,” he said, his voice laced with mockery, each syllable sharpened like a blade. The words were a deliberate provocation, his gaze glinting with cruel amusement.
Gwi’s lips parted, his breath catching in his throat as a strange tremor traveled through his core. There was something eerily familiar about the man before him—the cadence of his voice, the arrogant elegance of his movements, the glint of power behind his gaze. It was like a half-remembered dream clawing its way to the surface of his mind, something ancient, something buried. His heartbeat stuttered. That smirk. That presence. It clicked all at once, an invisible thread snapping taut in his memory.
“Lyc—”
“Lycaon,” came a faint, fearful whisper from the second-floor balcony. All heads turned as Lyn staggered forward, her eyes wide with recognition and terror. “No…”
Gwi, with his sharpened hearing, caught it clearly. The name. The truth. And just as his chest tightened with realization—
Then, for one breathless moment, everything froze. A low rumble—like thunder beneath the marble—shook the chandeliers. The air snapped cold. And then..
SCREAMS tore through the air outside the ballroom, followed by a bone-chilling roar from the palace gardens—deep, animalistic, and unmistakably unnatural.
Chaos erupted.
Lethea and Barn, once cloaked in noble finery, burst through the balcony doors—no longer human, but monstrous nightmares of fur and fang. Their transformations were grotesque, limbs contorting, jaws unhinging with inhuman snarls that shattered the air like thunderclaps. Lethea’s eyes glowed a venomous gold as her claws ripped into the drapes, while Barn’s massive frame sent splinters flying as he landed hard on the marble. Panic erupted—nobles shrieked in raw, primal terror, trampling one another as they scrambled to flee. The shrill cries of children pierced through the chaos. Guards shouted, blades scraping free, but even the soldiers hesitated at the sight of such feral fury. Blood sprayed from a panicked noble who didn’t move fast enough—his scream cut short by a flash of claws. The scent of fear, sharp and choking, filled the air. It was no longer a ballroom. It was a hunting ground.
Lycaon turned his head slowly, grinning like a wolf. “It begins.”
Lycaon smiled—and then his body contorted with a sickening crunch. Bones lengthened, fur erupted like wildfire, and the man became nightmare incarnate. Guests shrieked. The chandeliers trembled.
Gwi stepped in front of Siera without hesitation. “Protect the queen! Get everyone out!” he barked at the guards.
For the briefest heartbeat, Siera stood frozen.
A chill crawled up her spine, sinking into her bones as the truth finally landed like a falling blade—this was no political posturing, no veiled threat. This was war. A calculated, monstrous ambush launched from within the heart of her palace. Her mind caught fragments—the clapping, the voice, the roar. The scent of blood now curling into the air. And the way Lycaon had looked at her—not just like prey, but something claimed.
She inhaled sharply, steadying herself. Her heart pounded—not for herself, but for the lives tethered to this moment. For her people. For Gwi. For the children huddled behind the drapes. There was no room for fear. Only resolve
Lord Maren, pale and trembling, turned and fled without a word, casting one horrified glance at Lycaon before disappearing into the panicked crowd.
“Ylira,” Zaltarish growled, “go. Help the wounded. Protect our people.” The queen obeyed without protest, rallying Sung soldiers and nobles.
“Lysandra—go,” Eros ordered. The queen of Dam gave him a half-smile, as if enjoying the drama, then vanished with her guards.
Eros unsheathed his sword, eyes locked on Lycaon. “Time to settle scores.”
Key handed her twins to a guard and rushed to Siera. “We’re staying with you.”
Catelyn emerged through the smoke and chaos, blade in hand, face grim. “Your Majesty.”
Thierry reached Gwi’s side, his axe gleaming. “Let’s end this.”
Lyn descended the stairs, her face pale, but her resolve clear as she joined them.
Lycaon roared, and the air trembled. As soldiers clashed with Lethea and Barn, Gwi transformed into his werewolf form—a silver-furred beast with glowing eyes. Without hesitation, he launched himself at Lycaon.
“Siera,” he growled, “get to safety.”
“No,” she said, drawing her blade.
Key and Catelyn grabbed her arms, holding her back. “We fight together, but you’re not facing this alone,” Catelyn hissed. “Stay with us, Your majesty.”
Siera’s jaw clenched. She gave a reluctant nod and took a few steps back.
Gwi, Eros, Ryu, and Zaltarish converged on Lycaon with unwavering resolve. The clash was brutal—teeth, claws, steel, and fury—each of them pushing past their limits. Lycaon fought with savage elegance, matching even Gwi’s strength, but Gwi wasn’t alone. Eros moved with precision, his sword cutting through the air with deadly intent, slashing and dodging as if the fight was a dance. Ryu, fast as a shadow, struck from angles that caught Lycaon off guard, each blow a flash of calculated violence. Zaltarish, like a mountain come to life, drove his sword into Lycaon’s defenses with the power of a storm, his strength pushing the werewolf back with every swing.
Together, they fought as one, each blow they landed a testament to their shared purpose, but Lycaon was relentless, his dark power a force none of them had fully anticipated.
“You’re strong,” Lycaon growled to Gwi as they locked claws. “But still a fool. Fighting your own kind for their sake?” He gestured toward the humans. “They will never accept you.”
“I’m not fighting for acceptance,” Gwi snarled, “I’m fighting for peace.”
“You think peace makes you strong, brother?” Lycaon’s voice was almost gentle. “But peace is a leash. You could be free—like me. Like us"
"But if you insist, so be it" Lycaon sneered.
Meanwhile out the other side, Lethea’s eyes, feral and gleaming, scanned the garden palace, her sharpened senses picking out the chaos of the battle. Her claws raked through the air with animalistic fury, cutting down guards and nobles alike, sending them scattering like prey. Her movements were swift, merciless, as she disarmed a soldier in a flash and kicked him to the ground. Blood splattered across the marble floor, the scent thick and metallic.
She moved with grace and brutality, her claws striking like the talons of a bird of prey. A noble’s cry echoed through the hall as she ripped through his guard and slashed at him. He fell to the floor, paralyzed by terror, his blood staining the ornate carpets beneath him.
As she swept through the ballroom, Lethea’s eyes darted over the faces of the crowd, looking for her target. Then, her gaze froze on Siera.
The queen stood at the center of it all, tall and unshaken, her posture regal even in the midst of carnage. Her chin was lifted slightly, a quiet but undeniable defiance in her bearing. Lethea’s heart skipped a beat at the sight—the way Siera stood there, commanding even in the face of such destruction.
There she is. Lethea’s lips curled into a snarl. She felt an uncontrollable, possessive jealousy surge within her—an urge to eliminate the queen before she could be a threat.
She hated how the queen stood untouched, unmoved. Hated how Lycaon looked at her. As if she, Lethea, with all her power and loyalty, had never existed.
With a savage screech, Lethea turned, eyes locked on Siera, her body tensing as she prepared to strike. But then Barn blocked her. “We have orders—outside, now!”
“I don’t care!” Lethea snarled, leaping over him and rushing toward Siera.
The air was thick with tension, and the battle raged on. Catelyn, Key, and Siera had been watching Lethea’s brutal attacks on others from afar, but the moment the werewolf turned her attention toward them, there was no hesitation.
Lethea’s eyes narrowed on Siera, her mouth twisting into a snarl as she darted forward with inhuman speed. She was closing the distance between them, claws ready to tear through flesh. But Siera wasn’t about to be an easy target.
Before Lethea could strike, Siera had already drawn her sword, a quick, fluid motion that glinted in the dim light. “Move,” Siera hissed at Key and Catelyn, and they immediately reacted, taking a step back to let her lead, but they weren’t retreating—just positioning themselves for the fight.
Key lunged forward with a wild, determined battle cry, her dagger raised high. She met Lethea’s incoming swipe head-on, her blade clashing against the werewolf’s claws with a brutal screech. Lethea’s furious growl echoed, but Key didn’t flinch. Instead, she twisted and spun, narrowly dodging another claw strike while aiming a sharp kick to Lethea’s side.
Catelyn, always precise and measured, followed up with a calculated strike. She dodged Lethea’s swipe with a fluid roll, then came up from behind, her short sword slashing toward the werewolf’s back. Lethea barely managed to twist out of the way, but the attack made her pause, her eyes shifting from Key to Catelyn.
In the moment of distraction, Siera surged forward, her sword raised high, striking down with all the force she could muster. Lethea blocked, but Siera’s ferocity left no room for mercy, and she pushed harder, forcing Lethea back.
“Stay focus,” Siera ordered her companions as they closed in on the werewolf from all angles. Her voice was sharp, focused—like a general commanding her troops in battle. She wasn’t waiting for the others to act; she was already moving, guiding their rhythm. The battle was swift, sharp, brutal. Three against one. Lethea was wild but skilled, her claws slicing the air. Catelyn struck with precision, Key with swift power, Siera with controlled grace.
But the twins—Gene and Dane—cried loudly behind them, terrified.
“Key, we need to get them out!” Siera yelled.
Key hesitated. “But—”
“GO!”
Reluctantly, Key gathered her children and retreated. Lethea saw the opening and lunged for Siera.
Siera raised her sword—but the blow never landed.
A massive wolf with shimmering silver-white fur crashed between them. Lyn.
She took the full brunt of Lethea’s attack, her body flung violently to the side. The force of the blow echoed through the hall as she slid across the marble floor, leaving a streak of blood in her wake.
“LYN!” Siera yelled, her attention snapping toward her.
At that moment, Lycaon slashed Gwi across the chest, knocking him back. The force of the blow sent him staggering, and he growled, barely staying on his feet. Lycaon grinned, stepping closer, his eyes gleaming with cruel satisfaction. His voice came low and smooth, tinged with dangerous amusement.
“I’ll reach out to you soon enough, Gwi. When you least expect it. When the walls come crumbling down around you.”
But Zaltarish, Eros, and Ryu pressed in with renewed fury. Lycaon snarled in frustration, then leapt away, landing near Lethea.
“Enough,” he snapped at her. Lethea bared her teeth.
The three werewolves vanished into the night, leaving blood and chaos in their wake.
Silence fell. Siera, breathless and shaken, stood beside Catelyn. Gwi turned slowly, fur matted with blood, his gaze immediately finding her.
“You’re safe,” he whispered.
But then his eyes widened. Lyn lay in a broken heap on the marble floor, human once more, blood staining her lips.
“Lyn…” he ran to her, falling to his knees.
She opened her mouth. “Gwi…” she whispered before collapsing.
He cradled her gently, lifting her into his arms with trembling hands, his heart pounding as he felt the warmth of her blood seeping through his sleeves. Without wasting a breath, he turned and shouted for the healers, his voice sharp with desperation. His steps were swift yet careful as he carried her through the chaos, weaving past the fallen and the stunned, determined to get her to safety.
Siera stared, unmoving. Her fists clenched. Her breath shallow. Her expression unreadable—but cold.
Catelyn lowered her sword, watching quietly. Ryu frowned, exchanging a glance with Thierry. Eros said nothing but stepped toward Siera.
He gently touched her hand. “Are you alright?”
She nodded, but her eyes stayed fixed on the remain chaos infront of her.
“Catelyn,” Siera said, voice low. “Check on the people. Look for injuries. Report back within the hour. We need to help everyone.”
Catelyn gave a sharp nod, understanding both the order and the hidden tremble beneath Siera’s command. “Yes, Your Majesty.” She turned swiftly, rallying the remaining guards and moving into the chaos left in the wake of the attack.
Siera remained still, her fingers curling and uncurling at her side. The echo of battle still rang in her ears—the scent of blood, the crackle of torn marble, the ghost of Gwi's figure that dissapear just now.
Behind her, Eros stood silent, eyes searching her face. He knew better than to offer comfort now. She wouldn’t accept it. Not while her pride still stood between her pain and the world.
But the Queen of Hwon did not waver.
“Ryu,” she said, her voice steady, her eyes never leaving the broken hall. “Find the tracks of the wolves. I want to know where they fled.”
Ryu, already grim and tense, nodded without question. “Consider it done.”
“Eros.” Her voice softened slightly, but only slightly. “We will need to speak with the other kings by dawn. This isn’t over.”
He nodded. “I’ll make the arrangements.”
Siera finally moved. One step. Then another. Toward the throne—not the dais, but the shattered center of the hall where bloods stained the stone and her people's screams still lingered like ghosts.
She stood amidst the ruin, upright and silent, her gown torn, her blade bloodstained, the silver thread catching firelight like frost.
