Chapter 20.2: The Unknown Man

“Have you told anyone about this?”
“No, no. No one in my family knows about it and as much as possible I have no intention to tell them, too. Though…” she paused, hesitated to tell about her secretary.
“Miss Ventura, we have to know everything and everyone that involved here in case your hunch is true.”
She took a deep breath, ‘Look, Eunice. This will benefit you. If that man has something to do with Dean, the detectives will do the risky works to know the guy’s whereabouts and identifications which means you just have to sit somewhere and wait for the outcome of the investigation, you are safe, and the problem is solved!’
She smiled at the back of her mind and nodded.
“My secretary knows about this. She’s actually the first one who had seen him eyeing our building,” she confessed.
“May I have the name of your secretary?”
“Yeah, the name is Elisa Delavin.”
The questioning went on, so as her cooperation. Though, she was careful enough not to let her tongue get slipped and tell him about the badge and letters she has. The man asked her all the information he has to know and proceeded to sketch the man based on her given descriptions.
“He is about 6'2 in height, black hair, fair complexion, well-built, broad shoulders, heavy smoker and—”
“He has a badge. Same with the one that the guards of the facility owned by Mister Henry Yuscov have.”
“Henry Yuscov?” he repeated, forehead creases as he heard the name of the man.
Knocks on the door interrupted them—a man in a suit came in.
“Sorry to disturb, Sir, Ma’am,” the polite newly came detective excused and went beside the Head Detective.
“Keep the operation going,” he said upon hearing the report, and hid the envelope given to him.
That must be a big deal that the two men were so serious about the case. The sudden tensed movement of his jaw and clenching of fists are enough evidence to know.
The man left after giving his report. But, it took the man in front of her minutes to cool down himself.
“Is everything okay, detective?” she asked, concerned.
It was if he has forgotten about her, he apologized.
“I am sorry for spacing out. I am okay.”
“That is fine.”
She may be his client, but that doesn’t mean she is as demanding as the others they have handled before her.
“Where were we again?”
She smiled to let him know that what happened didn’t really a bother to her.
“About the badge that the man has. It is the same as the bodyguards of Henry Yuscov have.”
“Henry Yuscov, the man behind the facility found at the island of Dreen? Was it him you are referring to?” This time, the detective seems to be different from the one she was talking to a while ago. He speaks so serious, and seems like wanted to dismiss her in any minute.
“You seemed to be tired today, Mister Detective. I think you need some rest. But if you don’t mind, you can either call me or I will meet you here in some other days.” She wrote down her phone numbers on his note, without waiting for his response.
“I am really sorry for today, Miss Ventura. But I will call you later tonight. I promised. It’s just that—”
“Something came up, and you want to do the work yourself? That is totally fine with me. Go ahead and do your job.”
“By the way, does he looked like this?” he handed her the sketch he made.
‘What a wonderful hand,’ she praised.
“Yes, this is him. This looks exactly like him,” she confirmed.
“Okay then. Rest assured that we will do our best to keep this man away from your family.”
“Thank you, detective. Their safety is my priority.”
“It is our job to keep you safe.”
Just by that, they part ways. Outside the building, from her car, she saw him hopped in to one of his detective’s car and fled.
‘It must be tough to be a detective.” She thought and start the engine. But even before she could step on the gas, a call from an unknown number stopped her.
“Hello?”
“Yes, hello. Is this Eunice Ventura?”
She thinks twice whether to say yes or no. But at the end, she decided to claim her identity.
“Yes, speaking. May I help you?”
“Thank God! The call finally went in!” the woman from the other line exclaimed.
“Hello, darling?” a familiar voice spoke.
“Dad? Where are you? Who are you with?”
“Uhmm. I am with a friend,” he said in a lower tone.
“And who is this friend might be?”
“It’s Sonia. An old friend. I happened to see her in my way to my old town.”
“I see. What are you doing there?”
“I just missed the place.”
“Uh-hmm. Do you want me to go there, too? Is that why you called?”
“Nope. I just called to say that I might be home late. I was calling your mom, but I think she’s busy with her garden again, and so are the two boys.”
“Okay then, I’ll tell it to mom.”
“Thank you, darling. Are you in your way home now?”
“Yeah.”
“Be safe then. Drive safely, you’re not in a race.”
“Noted, dad,” she chuckled.
As she drives home, her mind feel so restless. But a little hope isn’t that bad to hold on to.
“You are the only one that turns the end of my day good after having it bad through the whole day,” she spoke, placing her hand with the ring on her lips.
‘Ahh, I am getting married!’ she joyed and think of her plans for that special day as according to her own schedule, after 6:00 PM is no longer part of her working hours. Thus, she is free to do whatever she wants to do as the time hits six in the twilight.
