Chapter 48 The Hurt Wife

Nora's POV
"I will leave." I said, shattering the silence and cringing at the way the couple looked at me.
I was tired of them anyway, their ridiculous conversations and the pretense as if I wasn't right there in the room with them. Never had I been made to feel so small in my life.
I ignored Damon as I made my way to my bedroom. No, scratch that. I reminded myself that it was no longer my bedroom. The owner had come and it was time for the replacement to get lost. I cringed at the echo of what Sasha had called me.
I was a replacement.
I was a replacement.
Tears sprang to my eyes and I quickly hurried my steps, not wanting anyone to find me weak and crying, especially Betsy. I had a feeling that she knew Sasha was around, connected the dots even without knowing what was going on and knew I was the fake.
It was no longer a mystery why she had treated me the way she did earlier and had been informal. The swift change in her was like she never respected me anyway and had been waiting for this day to come.
I felt wetness on my burst and realized that I had been shedding the tears I had been desperate not to let out. Luckily for me, I was at the door and rushed in, sliding against the door as I crumpled to the ground, my shattered heart bleeding in a rush.
If my chest was open at the moment, I would be a pool already, flooding everywhere and staining the ground with red.
"Are you almost done?" Sasha yelled from the living room.
I didn't need to be told she was referring to me.
"I need some time alone with my man so we need you out as fast as you can."
I snorted as I got up from the floor, urging myself to be strong. She was being ridiculous and doing her best to make me feel bad and I wished I could tell her that it wasn't working. I was already broken by Damon not defending me and there was only little that she could do.
If I didn't know that her marriage with Damon was a fluke and he could barely tolerate her, I might have felt bad with her tantrums as she hoped.
"Nor—" she tried to call me again but Damon snapped at her and interrupted her.
"Stop yelling like an idiot, Sasha. I'm sure she will find her way out when she is ready to." Damon hissed.
"Of course, she will." Sasha snorted. "She doesn't look like she wants to leave."
I sighed. I wanted to leave but I didn't know where I was going to. My departure was sudden and I hadn't had enough time to prepare for where to go after leaving Damon's house.
I couldn't go back to my apartment where Mark would likely be there waiting for me. The best thing I could do for myself was to forget about the apartment. When the rent expired, I hoped Mark would find his way out of it. Knowing how jobless he was, I had no doubt that he would leave except he was stupid enough to believe I would come back.
He could have or sell the furniture and my other belongings in the house to survive or out of spite. I didn't care. It wasn't like I had any happy memory from childhood to hold on to.
I had enough for me to lodge in a hotel for a few days after leaving here and wondered what else I was going to do after that. I couldn't afford to keep staying in a hotel or not work at all. I doubted I could find a good job within a week. Even if I did, I doubted I could afford to keep staying in a hotel before I got paid my first salary. I was going to rack up debts I was unlikely to pay. I didn't have enough to rent an apartment and sighed at how suddenly my life had changed.
Why couldn't Sasha stay hidden for a few more months for me to get paid more from Damon to have my life together?
I thought again of the missing documents that could crash Damon's business and hated myself for being selfish.
My phone beeped and I swiped my hand over my face to wipe the tears so I could see the text. I sighed as I saw Damon's name flashing on the screen and wondered what he wanted to say.
If he wanted to apologize, it was too late for that.
Damon: I'm sorry about the unexpected turn of events. I will send you some money as compensation and have Hart sort you with whatever else you need to move on with your life.
Move on with my life?
I guessed he wanted me gone as fast as I could. What a beautiful pair he made with Sasha.
I snorted at the words as my eyes filled up with tears. My phone beeped again and I gasped at the amount Damon paid me.
I sighed as I packed all my clothes including the ones he bought for me. If he was helping me start over a new life, I wouldn't have to be worried about the people who knew the Nora I used to be.
I stepped out of the bedroom with my luggage, partially ready for the uncertain future before me.
