Chapter 71 He Doesn't Flinch

Ivy played the voicemail a second time, hands unsteady, and set the phone down on the bench between them like it had grown too heavy to hold.
"Seventy-two hours," she said. "Three days to decide what happens to an entire fortune, an entire family's future, and I don't even know what's actually inside that folder yet."
"Then we open it," Julian said, steady, "and we figure it out together."
"You don't have to say that like it's simple."
"It isn't simple. I never said it was." He turned to face her fully, his expression calm despite the chaos churning beneath the surface of the last several hours. "But you're not doing this alone, Ivy. Whatever's in that folder, whatever choice it asks you to make… I'm not going anywhere."
She studied his face, searching for the flicker of self-interest she'd learned to expect from nearly everyone else connected to this family, the calculation that inevitably crept into even Selene's most sincere-seeming moments. She didn't find it. His eyes stayed steady on hers, open, unguarded in a way that made her chest ache.
"You have a legitimate claim to a third of this fortune," she said quietly. "If I open that folder and the will hands everything to me instead, you lose whatever you might have been owed. Doesn't that terrify you at all?"
"No."
"Julian… "
"I mean it." His voice carried no hesitation. "I spent seventeen years building a life outside this family's money specifically because I didn't want it defining who I was. I came back three months ago to help Selene, to protect Mia, to finally understand the truth about the fire… never once because I wanted a piece of what Damian inherited. If the will hands all of it to you, then it hands all of it to someone who's proven, over and over this week, that she won't use it the way this family has always used everything it touches."
"How do you know that? I haven't even seen what's inside the folder yet."
"Because I've watched you all week." He reached for her hand again, steady, grounding. "You refused Damian's bonus the first night, when you didn't even understand what you were being paid to stay quiet about. You gave up your afternoon off to protect Mia instead of using it to rest. You told Renee the truth about not blaming her, even though you had every right to be furious. Every single choice you've made since you walked through that gate has cost you something and benefited someone else." His thumb traced slow circles against her knuckles. "That's not the profile of a woman who's going to misuse an inheritance, Ivy. That's the profile of a woman this family should have trusted with something important a long time ago."
Ivy felt her throat tighten, the sincerity in his voice landing somewhere she hadn't fully protected in years. "You really believe that."
"I do."
"Even knowing what it might cost you personally."
"Especially knowing that." Something almost wry touched the corner of his mouth. "I think, if I'm honest, watching you refuse to flinch from any of this all week has taught me more about what actually matters than seventeen years of resenting this family ever did."
She leaned into him then, resting her forehead against his shoulder, letting herself simply exist in the quiet weight of being believed in without conditions attached. He wrapped an arm around her, careful, unhurried, and for a long moment neither of them spoke, the exhausted stillness of the hallway wrapping around them like something protective.
"I'm scared," she admitted finally, the words small and honest in the dark.
"I know."
"Not of the money. Of what it means if I actually decide to hold onto it, even temporarily. Of becoming someone this family finally succeeds in making dangerous, the way Damian's always suspected I already was."
Julian pulled back enough to look at her directly, his expression serious now, no trace of easy reassurance in it. "Then don't hold onto it. Redistribute it, the moment you open that folder, in whatever way feels right to you. Give Julian's share to Julian. Give Rose whatever's owed to her after nineteen years of hiding. Make sure Mia's protected regardless of who her biological father turns out to be. You don't have to become anything, Ivy. You just have to make one decision, as honestly as you can, and then hand the responsibility back to the people it actually belongs to."
Something in his practicality steadied her more than any amount of comfort could have. "That's remarkably clear-headed, for a man who found out three hours ago he might be entitled to a third of this fortune himself."
"I've had seventeen years of practice not letting this family's money decide who I am." He offered a tired, genuine smile. "It's a skill, apparently. One I'm finally glad I built."
She almost laughed, the sound catching somewhere between exhaustion and relief, and for a moment the weight pressing down on her chest since the voicemail's message finally eased, just enough to breathe properly again.
"Three days," she said, working through it aloud. "I need to actually read Eleanor's letter again. Talk to Damian, to Selene, to Rose, to Catherine… understand exactly what's at stake before I open anything."
"That sounds like a plan."
"It sounds like an impossible amount of work in seventy-two hours."
"Then we start tonight." He stood, offering his hand to help her up. "No more waiting for tomorrow to handle what tonight already handed us."
She took his hand, letting him pull her to her feet, and they stood together in the quiet hallway a moment longer, gathering themselves for whatever came next. As they turned to head back toward the study, Ivy's phone buzzed one final time… not the blocked number this time, not Vivian's careful guidance, but a text from Damian, sent only seconds ago, short enough that its brevity alone carried a kind of dread.
*The folder's gone. Someone took it from the sitting room while we were all distracted tonight. And Ivy… the only person besides Vivian who knew exactly where it was sitting unattended is Regina.*
