Chapter Two Hundred Eleven: Planning For The Future
The next morning, Amelia woke up earlier than usual.
The sun hadn’t fully risen yet, and the soft gray light seeped through the curtains. She lay there, staring at the ceiling, her hand resting on her stomach without realizing it. It still felt unreal. After years of hoping, trying, and crying quietly in the dark, there was finally a reason to believe.
Dean stirred beside her. He turned slightly, eyes still half-closed, and reached out to find her hand. “Why are you awake so early?” he asked, his voice still husky from sleep.
“I couldn’t sleep,” she admitted softly. “It feels… different today.”
He opened his eyes fully then, turning onto his side to face her. “Different, huh?”
Amelia glanced at him and smiled faintly. “We’re really doing this.”
Dean squeezed her hand gently. “Yeah. We are.”
For a while, they lay there in silence, listening to each other breathe. There was no rush, no loud declarations, just quiet understanding.
A week later, they went back to the clinic for the first ultrasound. Amelia’s heart raced as she sat on the examination table, her legs dangling slightly above the floor.
Dean stood next to her, his hand resting lightly on her shoulder.
The doctor entered, greeting them warmly before starting the scan. Amelia held her breath as the screen came to life, her eyes locked on the blurry image forming.
“Here,” the doctor said gently, pointing at the small flicker on the screen. “That’s the heartbeat.”
Amelia felt her throat tighten. A soft, rapid rhythm filled the room, and she couldn’t tear her eyes away.
Dean reached for her hand, his grip firm, almost protective. He didn’t say anything, but when she glanced at him, she saw his jaw clenched, his expression softer than she had ever seen it.
“That’s… ours,” she whispered, her voice cracking.
The doctor nodded with a smile. “Everything looks good so far. You’ll need to take it slow, Amelia. No heavy lifting, plenty of rest.”
Amelia nodded, still processing the sound of the tiny heartbeat echoing in her ears.
Life shifted subtly but significantly after that appointment.
Dean became more careful than ever. He insisted on driving her everywhere, even when she protested. Grocery bags disappeared from her hands before she could even lift them. He started keeping a mental list of what she ate, making sure she got enough nutrients without saying it outright.
“Dean, I can pour myself a glass of water,” she teased one afternoon when he hovered behind her in the kitchen.
He glanced at her belly instinctively — still flat, but somehow carrying more weight than before. “Just let me,” he said simply.
Amelia rolled her eyes but let him take over. “If you keep this up, I’m going to forget how to function.”
“Good,” he said without missing a beat. “Then you’ll have no choice but to depend on me.”
She laughed, shaking her head. “You’re impossible.”
By the sixth week, the morning sickness hit.
Amelia sat on the bathroom floor one morning, hugging her knees while Dean crouched beside her, holding her hair back.
“I hate this,” she muttered, wiping her mouth with a damp towel.
“I know,” he said softly, handing her a glass of water. “Small sips.”
She took it and leaned back against the wall, closing her eyes. “I feel like my body’s turned against me.”
Dean brushed his thumb over her knuckles. “It’s working hard. You’re working hard.”
Despite the exhaustion, Amelia managed a weak smile. “You always know what to say.”
He kissed her temple gently. “I’m just stating facts.”
From that day on, Dean stocked the kitchen with crackers, ginger tea, and anything the doctor recommended. He set reminders on his phone for her vitamins and quietly adjusted his work schedule to be home earlier, just in case she needed him.
At eight weeks, they finally decided to tell their families.
The Vescari mansion was filled with soft chatter when they arrived one Saturday evening. Kairo and Arielle greeted them warmly, unaware of the news waiting to be shared.
After dinner, Dean took Amelia’s hand under the table, giving it a small squeeze before clearing his throat.
“We… have something to tell you,” he began, glancing at Amelia for reassurance.
Her heart pounded, but she nodded slightly. “We’re… expecting,” she said softly.
For a moment, there was silence. Then Arielle gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. Kairo leaned back in his chair, a rare, genuine smile breaking across his face.
“You’re pregnant?” Arielle asked, her voice trembling.
Amelia nodded, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes.
Kieran, who was sitting nearby with Clara, let out a low whistle and grinned. “About time,” he teased gently, though his voice carried warmth.
Arielle rushed over to hug Amelia, her joy spilling over in quiet sobs. Dean stood behind them, his hand resting lightly on Amelia’s back, his expression calm but proud.
Despite the excitement, Dean and Amelia kept most of their days quiet. They avoided unnecessary outings, choosing instead to spend evenings on their balcony or curled up on the couch.
One night, Amelia sat cross-legged on the sofa, scrolling through a list of baby names on her tablet.
Dean came in from the kitchen with two mugs of warm milk and set one in front of her. “You’re already looking at names?”
She glanced up at him, smiling faintly. “It’s never too early.”
He sat beside her, leaning in to peek at the screen. “No to ‘Percival,’” he said immediately.
Amelia laughed. “That wasn’t even on the list.”
“It might’ve been,” he replied, sipping his milk. “We have to be cautious.”
She shook her head, amused. “You’re ridiculous.”
He looked at her belly again — still small, still unnoticeable to anyone but them — and his voice softened. “We’re really doing this,” he said quietly.
Amelia reached for his hand, interlacing their fingers. “Yeah,” she whispered. “We are.”
At ten weeks, Amelia woke up one night with a sharp cramp in her lower abdomen. Panic surged through her chest instantly.
“Dean,” she whispered urgently, shaking his shoulder.
He woke instantly, his instincts kicking in. “What’s wrong?”
“I… I don’t know. It hurts,” she said, her voice shaking.
He didn’t waste a second. Within minutes, they were in the car, driving back to the clinic. The silence between them was thick with unspoken fears.
The doctor examined her carefully and ran an ultrasound. Amelia gripped Dean’s hand tightly, barely breathing until the doctor finally looked up with a reassuring smile.
“Everything’s fine,” she said gently. “It’s normal. Your body’s adjusting.”
Amelia let out a shaky breath, tears sliding down her cheeks.
Dean pressed his lips to her temple, his voice low and steady. “You’re okay. The baby’s okay.”
That night, when they got home, Dean refused to let go of her hand until she fell asleep.
By the twelfth week, Amelia’s energy began returning. She and Dean started talking more about practical things — setting up a nursery, choosing a hospital, and figuring out how to balance work and parenthood.
One weekend, they walked through a baby store, moving slowly between rows of cribs and strollers. Amelia ran her fingers along a soft blanket, imagining the little life they’d soon be holding.
Dean stood beside her, quietly scanning the shelves. “We should get the safest car seat on the market,” he said thoughtfully.
Amelia smiled faintly. “Of course you’d start with safety.”
He glanced at her, one corner of his mouth lifting slightly. “That’s my job.”
Three months passed in a blur of appointments, medications, and small changes.
One evening, Amelia stood in front of the mirror, tracing the barely noticeable curve of her belly. It wasn’t obvious yet, but to her, it felt monumental.
Dean came up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.
“You keep staring,” he murmured.
“I still can’t believe it,” she admitted softly.
He kissed her shoulder gently. “Believe it,” he said simply.
In that quiet moment, with his arms around her and the promise of their future growing inside her, Amelia finally let herself breathe.Download Novelah App
