Chapter 26

The Quiet Before the Stage
The drive back to the Croft estate felt longer than usual, not because of the distance, but because silence had weight tonight. It pressed in from every direction, thick and suffocating, filling the space between the hum of the car engine and the thoughts clawing at the edges of my mind.
By the time the wrought-iron gates came into view, gilded with the family crest that had become both armor and curse, the sun had begun its descent. Long streaks of gold filtered through the tinted windows, bathing everything in an amber glow, warm, almost holy. I didn’t deserve the blessing.
The moment the car stopped before the main entrance, the doors opened in choreographed precision. The staff bowed their heads as I stepped out, my gown catching the fading light like spilled champagne. The smile I offered was thin and practiced, an old habit polished to perfection.
By the time I reached my suite, the light had shifted into something softer, more fragile. It spread across the marble floors like the last prayer of a dying day.
They descended upon me instantly.
Hands that knew the language of luxury, gentle, efficient, wordless. My heels were unbuckled, my jewelry unfastened, each diamond and pearl set aside with reverence, as though they were relics of a saint rather than trophies of a social performance. I stood there and let it happen, the ritual of my unmaking.
Every clasp undone, every fabric folded, stripped me further from her, the Montesque–Mclane heiress, the symbol, the puppet in couture. I needed the ritual. I needed to shed her skin before I could breathe again as Anastasia.
When the last maid curtsied and withdrew, I turned the key in the lock. The soft click sounded like a benediction.
Silence.
My sanctuary.
The air was faintly perfumed with roses, engineered perfection pumped through the ventilation system. It was supposed to be soothing. I found it cloying.
I crossed to the window, the cool glass beneath my fingertips grounding me. Beyond the gardens stretched the empire my family had built, geometric hedges trimmed within an inch of their lives, fountains catching the last of the sunlight. Every leaf, every petal was manicured into submission. Just like everything, and everyone, in this house.
Somewhere within these walls, Klaude existed.
The thought sent an involuntary ripple through me. Somewhere, the man who had humiliated me, who had kissed another woman in a way he once reserved for me, was likely rehearsing his lines for tomorrow, the devoted fiancé, the polished prince beside the perfect bride.
My reflection in the window met my gaze, sharp and unblinking.
“You are its queen.”
Mother’s voice drifted from memory, regal, cold, unwavering. I could still see her standing before me the day the engagement was announced, a crystal flute in her hand, her lips painted in the exact shade of power.
A queen does not lower herself to fight for her throne. She simply takes it.
Her words had sounded like wisdom then. Now they felt like prophecy.
Father’s warning, however, had come quieter, almost tender, behind the smoke of his cigar on a late evening years ago.
“A crown looks different when it starts to cut into the skin, Angelique. Wear it carefully.”
I hadn’t understood him then. Now, I did.
My crown had long since drawn blood.
The estate at dusk was a world of illusions, chandeliers flickering through the halls, footsteps echoing faintly like ghosts of past banquets. Somewhere, a piano played, soft, mechanical, perfectly timed. I used to love that sound when I was a child. Now, it reminded me of everything that had been orchestrated for me long before I learned to choose.
I pressed my forehead to the windowpane, the chill seeping into my skin. I tried to imagine what it would feel like to run through those gardens barefoot, to scream until the air burned my throat. The thought was ridiculous. I hadn’t screamed since I was twelve.
Tomorrow, the performance began again. The press would arrive. The families would mingle. Klaude and I would smile until our jaws ached. The perfect couple. The union of dynasties. The spectacle the world adored.
And I would stand beside him, flawless and hollow, the bride who would make empires rise and gossip die.
But tonight, for a few hours, I could be still.
I undressed the rest of the way and slipped into bed. The sheets were cool against my skin — silk imported from Florence, monogrammed and spotless. Everything here was pristine.
Untouched.
Unforgiving.
My body ached, not from the day’s events, but from the weight of constant performance. I could no longer tell where Anastasia ended and the act began.
Anastasia Angelique Mclane–Montesque.
The angel. The bride. The empire in heels.
But beneath all that porcelain polish lived something raw and unyielding. A pulse of defiance. The quiet, dangerous truth of who I really was.
I turned onto my back, staring at the ceiling. My mind drifted toward memories I had no right to keep, the curve of Klaude’s smile before it soured, the warmth in his voice when it was only for me. There had been a time when I thought he looked at me and saw me. Not the heiress, not the power play, just me.
What a fool I had been.
Did he think I had forgotten? That betrayal could be swallowed whole, buried beneath silk and etiquette, and left to rot quietly?
He underestimated me. They all did.
The Croft estate had always been a cage gilded in gold leaf, but now it was more than that. It was a battlefield dressed in chandeliers. Every corridor, every staircase carved from imported marble, they would soon bear witness to the war neither of us could admit we were already waging.
He wanted to play the devoted fiancé? I would let him. Let him think he was winning. Let him think I was still the dutiful bride who smiled on command.
But I knew what he had done. And I knew how to destroy him without ever raising my voice.
I reached for the velvet box on my nightstand, Mother’s latest gift. Inside lay a diamond hairpiece, cold and exquisite, its facets catching the lamplight like tiny knives. I turned it in my fingers, watching the light fracture across the ceiling.
A crown in miniature. Beautiful. Unforgiving.
Tomorrow, I will wear it. Tomorrow, the world will see the perfect bride. Tomorrow, Klaude would stand beside me, smiling, and think the crown made me gentle.
He wouldn’t see the blood beneath it.
I placed the hairpiece back into its box, shut it, and exhaled. The silence of the room shifted, heavier now, filled with promises I hadn’t yet spoken.
For a fleeting moment, I wondered what it might feel like to walk away. To leave it all, the wealth, the name, the expectations, and vanish into anonymity. To become someone who could breathe without thinking about posture, lineage, or legacy.
But that fantasy dissolved as quickly as it formed. People like me didn’t disappear. We didn’t get to start over. We were born into contracts, sculpted into symbols, paraded like saints.
No, escape wasn’t the story written for me.
Victory was.
And I would win, no matter how long it took, no matter how much it cost.
The lights dimmed automatically at nine. The automation system whispered good night in a polite tone. I ignored it and stared at the ceiling until my eyes blurred.
The ceiling mural, angels ascending, gleamed faintly in the dark. I used to trace their outlines when I couldn’t sleep. Now they looked less like angels and more like witnesses.
I closed my eyes, and the darkness felt alive. I could almost hear the echo of the ballroom where tomorrow’s celebration would unfold, the laughter, the champagne, the applause for a love that didn’t exist.
Let them all watch. Let them all believe.
I would smile, raise my glass, and play my part to perfection, until the time came to burn it all down.
Sleep crept in slowly and reluctant, curling around the edges of my thoughts. My last conscious breath carried a single vow, sharp and venomous as a blade hidden in silk:
No one steals a crown from me and lives to tell the tale.
Not him.
Not anyone.
