CHAPTER 80 Modesty vs mischief

Amy shivered slightly, the cool air mixing with the damp fabric of her hoodie. She hugged herself, trying to hold onto warmth, while Adrian slipped his arm lightly around her shoulders, just enough to offer protection from the chill.
Behind the reception desk, a young woman looked up. She couldn’t have been older than twenty-five, with sharp eyes and a friendly, professional smile. Her dark hair was pulled back in a neat ponytail, and she had a subtle glow from the soft overhead lighting.
“Good evening,” Adrian said, his voice calm, confident, yet carrying a warmth that seemed to ease Amy’s tension. “We need a room for the night.”
The receptionist’s eyes flicked from Adrian to Amy, noting the damp hoodie and slightly flushed cheeks. “Of course,” she replied smoothly. “Our deluxe rooms are available. That would be… $180 for the night, including taxes and service.” She gestured toward a small screen on the counter, displaying the total.
Adrian didn’t hesitate. “Perfect.” He pulled his phone from his pocket, opening the payment app. He scanned the QR code the receptionist provided, the transaction completed within seconds. The screen flashed green with a confirmation, and Adrian tucked his phone back into his pocket.
Amy, meanwhile, was hugging herself tightly, teeth chattering faintly from the cold. Her arms trembled under the thin fabric of the hoodie. Adrian’s eyes softened. He reached over and rested a hand gently on her back, squeezing lightly. “You’re freezing,” he murmured. “Here, lean on me.”
She hesitated, then let herself press closer, grateful for the warmth radiating from him. The hoodie clung to both of them now, damp and heavy, but the contact was comforting — intimate in a way that made her cheeks flush.
The young receptionist handed Adrian a keycard. “Room 312,” she said, smiling. “Elevator’s to your right. Enjoy your stay.”
“Thank you,” Adrian said, his gaze briefly meeting hers with a polite nod before he turned to Amy. “Ready?”
Amy nodded, her body still slightly vibrating from the cold. Adrian offered his arm, which she took, letting him guide her toward the elevator. Each step they took echoed softly in the polished lobby, the floral scent and quiet elegance of the hotel contrasting sharply with the storm raging outside.
Inside the elevator, the warmth of the confined space enveloped them. Amy pressed closer to Adrian instinctively, shivering lightly. He didn’t pull away. Instead, he let her lean against him, hand brushing his, the simple contact sending a subtle, electric thrill through both of them.
As the elevator doors opened onto their floor, Amy exhaled softly. “It’s… it’s really nice here,” she murmured, still half clinging to his arm.
--------
Adrian’s fingers pressed the keycard into the lock, and the door clicked open. The room beyond stretched spacious and pristine, the walls painted a soft white that made the ambient lights glow warmly. A large window dominated one side, offering a sweeping view of the city’s nighttime skyline — twinkling streetlights mirrored the stars above.
“Wow,” Amy whispered, stepping inside, her wet shoes leaving tiny puddles on the polished floor. She shook off droplets from her hoodie, glancing around. The room felt unexpectedly luxurious.
Adrian stepped in after her, closing the door behind them. “Make yourself comfortable,” he said, smiling softly. “You look like you could use a warm-up.”
Amy nodded, clutching her wet clothes against her. “Yeah… I need to change,” she muttered, heading toward the bathroom. The door clicked softly behind her as she stepped inside, the mirror fogged slightly from the ambient heat. Her soaked clothes clung to her skin, and she hung them carefully over the rack to dry.
Her phone buzzed on the countertop. She picked it up, and Sarah’s name lit up the screen.
“Sarah?” Amy answered, trying to keep her voice calm.
“Where are you? I’m back from the date!” Sarah almost yelled.
Amy hesitated, biting her lip. “I… I won’t be coming home tonight,” she said quietly, glancing at her reflection. The pink of her cheeks mirrored both the embarrassment and the awkwardness of the situation.
“Wait, what? Are you okay?” Sarah asked, a hint of panic creeping in.
“I’m fine,” Amy reassured her softly. “Just… staying over somewhere for the night. I’ll tell you tomorrow.” She ended the call and set her phone aside, switching it off with a quick press.
   ***********
Amy finished drying her clothes, shaking out the damp fabric before draping them neatly over a chair. Her eyes landed on the plush hotel robes hanging nearby — three of them, thick, soft, and inviting. Relief washed over her. Thank goodness, she thought, tugging one around herself and tying the belt snugly at her waist.
Stepping out of the bathroom, the warm glow of the room greeted her. Adrian stood in front of the large mirror by the window, his back to her. The city lights outside cast soft reflections across the glass, highlighting the contours of his shoulders and back.
She cleared her throat softly. “Uh… wear something,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady, but her gaze lingered longer than she intended.
Adrian didn’t turn immediately. Instead, he tilted his head, a teasing smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “Oh?” he said lightly, voice low, carrying a playful drawl. “And what happens if I… don’t?”
Amy’s cheeks heated instantly. She looked away, fumbling with the robe’s belt. “I… I mean, it’s just… you know… modesty,” she muttered, though her eyes kept darting back toward him.
Finally, Adrian turned, slow and deliberate. He faced her fully, arms relaxed at his sides, chest bare. His gaze met hers, sharp and teasing, and she could feel her pulse quicken.
“You’re staring,” he said softly, tilting his head in mock accusation. “I’m almost tempted to leave it like this just to see how long it takes you to look away.”
Amy groaned lightly, covering her face with one hand, though the robe slipped slightly at the shoulders, making her shiver. “Stop teasing me,” she said, her voice half-laugh, half-embarrassment.
Adrian chuckled, taking a step closer, the faint scent of his cologne mixing with the warm air. “You don’t need to hide your reactions,” he said. “It’s… cute. Admit it.”
Amy snapped her head toward him, eyes wide. “Cute?! I’m… I’m freezing, okay? And you—” she gestured vaguely at his bare chest — “you’re making it worse!”
“Am I?” he said, voice low and teasing. He leaned against the mirror’s edge, arms crossed casually. “Or are you just realizing it’s… not so bad to be this close?”
Her cheeks burned hotter. She huffed, trying to regain composure, but a small, reluctant smile crept onto her lips. Adrian’s grin widened, sensing the victory, though he didn’t press further — not yet.
“Alright,” she said finally, tugging the robe tighter around her. “Enough teasing. Let’s just… get comfortable.”
Adrian gave a soft laugh, taking a step back. “Fine,” he said, but the spark of amusement in his eyes never faded. “We’ll get comfortable… but don’t think this is the end of teasing.”
Amy groaned again, shaking her head, though a part of her couldn’t stop smiling.
