Chapter 67

Many problems confront the country now. Economic recession was beating the country hard. Only a hand full of people eats well. The commoners began to get restless and openly discuss rioting and revolution. Those in the parliament were getting disturbed, beefing up security in their homes and offices and avoiding public places.
For those infant days of democracy and beyond, Mr. President had some bad times with Mr. Zack. They had openly confronted each other, fought over words and got their wound in heart.  He knew he was the only rebellious son who could meet him up in match. He had been with Mr. President and the ruling party long enough and knew the entire secret. He was young and fearless but not new in the list of the nation’s strong and vibrant politicians. Mr. President at the intoxicating heights of presidency found him insurmountable and indestructible.
That year Mr. President without heraldry declared a shoot at sight order and imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew, and banned meetings. At roadblocks, local residents were severely beaten or detained to anyone found wanting to morality by police and other forces. Criminals who parade the street destroying lives and many properties. He had opposed the idea at the seating of the lawmakers in the country noticing that those who would be found guilty were those on Mr. President hit list. Mr. president believed that because he was the author of the new democratic system, he hardly agreed with anybody on anything. The gap between the two parties has narrowed considerably and a fierce battle of who should speak became a big problem.   Everyone admitted that his idea was worthy of encouragement but many could not speak out, and for a couple of personal preference to ideas, it got not a final nod. There were some dry disagreements.
There was division and in line with the president’s order, a search was put in place for anyone who was out to disobey the law and reward was offered by the police and security agencies to get anyone found wanting. They did not succeed. No one was out for this; no real conspirator was found or showed up. It only based on rumor. The country was the eyes of everyone. Anything strange, funny could happen. Corruption, cronyism, fight over words and division even in ruling party was all too common.
Mr. President, master of all tricks, had headed the country more than anyone else. When he was barely young ; a young office in the army, he gave everyone a dose of his trouble. No one spoke about him openly even in secret with his family member. He had informants and paid agents in almost every institution and polygamous and divided homes. It was better to be found guilty by the decree than to be found by him guiltily.
It was a night of high drama and cheers. At this setting everyone seemed so important and absorbed.  The county’s power brokers were all present. Each side was seeking attention, favour and recognition. They want their voice heard at this moment. They had long endured. Mostly were many people who had courted media with long profile on the political experience. The camera showed their faces in their order of seniority and popularity. On parade were virtually all the gladiators from the ruling party - from heavy weights to middleweights and then featherweight. Mr. President came in at last with the door shut and was flanked by a full retinue of bodyguards and attendants.
While the wait to be formally introduced retained its portents, the mood of the night changed. It was the voice of the contender echoing in the clear tone of the microphone. The question would have been, who influenced him? But it was no new news that they were molested bees from other ailing party who had been lured into the ruling party by Mr. President for less than three denarii’s. It was the last hope of the common renegades who needed power at all cost. Besides, the party’s constitution had been narrowed down to accommodate all sorts of persons.  Mr. Ribadau was the only standing tree that could say anything to anyone in the presence of Mr. President and go free. Others bought their freedom of expression and could not use it when it called for. He had been prepared for the night to humiliate anyone who if the President gave in to handover wills of the entire nation, that such person would continue with him. It would be for another tree belonging to the same bush, but on a distance apart by its stump and branches.
It was also reasonable to believe that he had his masters backing. Indeed he had. He walked around without any regard for those paraded at the high table, looking some eyeball to eyeball. After a while he said affirmatively to Mr. Zack:
