Chapter Seventeen

Enoch
He stood before the open window with a worried expression on his face. Eli hadn't shown up all day. It was totally unlike him.
Had something happened?
He glanced at the night sky in question. Somewhere far away, loud upbeat music was played. Aside from that, only the shuffle of the hurrying feet of doctors and nurses disturbed the slightly quiet night. Enoch was grateful that his father had at least gotten him a personal ward else he'd have puked his guts out in the general ward. Sick people sickened him.

His hands trembled slightly. He let out a soft hiss and closed the window. His throat felt dry and his head hurt a bit. With shaky limbs, he stalked towards his bed, grabbed the jug on the bedside drawer and chugged the cool liquid thirstily. His heart palpitated wildly in his chest. If something had gone wrong with Eli, then Demi would come for him. He was certain. Enoch did the only reasonable thing he could think of, he laid on the bed and covered himself.
I can't be stressed. I must not be stressed.
Before he met Demi, his life had been awry enough. He had a mother who had died due to a mental disorder, a father who was afraid his son would end up like his mother and had stigmatised him. His father was a fickle man. A man that literally was suspicious of his own shadow. And when he was informed that there was a chance his son would inherit the mental disorder from his mother, he refused to get attached.

Enoch was six when he stopped receiving warm hugs. When his father stopped laughing at his jokes. When the cook made his meals instead. When he had to start seeing a therapist. His normal childhood was snatched away from his fingertips.

And when Demi came into his life; an innocent, goofy dark-haired twelve-year-old; Enoch had felt his world of grey turn colourful with a splash of rainbows. She made him forget. Literally. She got him hooked and then tore him apart into bits. Tore them apart.

A shiver ran up his spine and he knew he wasn't alone. He sat up immediately and his eyes collided with a rather familiar figure.
Think of the witch and she shall appear.
"Want some Morphine Nochie?" She asked in a sickeningly sweet voice that turned his stomach. She stood beside the slightly ajar door, the morphine sachet in her hand gleamed in the white hospital light.
" Of course, you don't. You might get addicted again, right?"
                 "L-Leave." He choked.

Demi gave a light laugh and walked toward him. "One time you used to crave my attention. What has changed Nochie?"
Enoch couldn't control his eyes from roaming her face and figure. She looked thinner. Her cheeks had hollowed in and her countenance made her look frail. But she was far from fragile.
"Get out Demi!" He spat suddenly feeling suffocated with her so nearby. He looked at the white bed sheets instead. He suffered from impulsiveness, she knew that. And she was toying with that knowledge.
"Tsk tsk, why Nochie? I'm even wearing your favourite dress. See?!"
From the corner of his eyes, Enoch saw her twirl, the red and orange dress looked like blood and fire to him. They held a memory. A deep dark memory that he planned to go to the grave with. The same memory she always held against him. Enoch gritted his teeth, laid back on the bed and turned to face the wall.
"Don't do this." He murmured clutching the bed sheet tighter.
"Don't do what? Play this video?" He heard the smirk in her voice as she brought out her phone. "Let me refresh your memory Nochie."
"Smile for the camera Nochie."
That day was two years before. They were in his room lounging. His father wasn't home and the cook had gone to the market. Just a very high Enoch and his precious Demi. He swallowed hard in anticipation.
                   "..Enoch?..."
                   "...You look good Demi..."
She laughed softly. Like music.
"You've said that like twenty times already. Now wave to the camera so we can upload it jor."
                      "... I love you, Demi..."
Enoch resisted the urge to groan. He had been stupid. Morphine had weakened his control and alighted his impulsiveness. And he would forever regret it. Demi would make sure of it.
"That's just the morphine talking Nochie... What...what are you doing?"
                    "I do. I do-"
                    "Enoch?! Enoch what..."
A rip filled the air. Enoch's head hurt at the sound.
"Enoch stop this instant? What is wrong with- Enoch!!!" She screamed.
"Stop.. stop the video. Demi please."
"Please? I had said that to that day hadn't I?" Demi hissed.
"I do love you Demi" He heard his pathetic self say.
"...I've heard you, Enoch. I've heard. Don't do this. Please, Enoch..."
He could take it no more.
"Stop! Stop it, Demi. I was sorry! I am sorry! Why won't you let it go?! Why won't you let me be Demi? I was freaking high on Morphine. I wasn't in control!" He was off to bed now, standing right before her, wide-eyed and breathing raggedly. His hands trembled and he fought the urge to hold her. She had been his stabilizer once, but never again.
"What do you want Demi?" His voice sounded weak and strained. He was tired already.
Her hands extended to his face and he closed his eyes in defiance of their warmth.
"You can run as much as you want Noche, but I own you. You forget that too well." She smirked.
He grabbed her hands off his face, his lips curled in an irritated sneer.       "Speak."
A wicked chuckle escaped her.  "Hasty are we? You will tell the police that Elijah orchestrated this incident."
The sneer on his face pulled into a frown.   "No!"
"No? I might as well send the video to the police then." She stated with a hollow laugh.
"Why are you doing this? You've turned into a mons-"
"Because that stupid girl stole everything! Vicky took everyone from me. What am I to do Nochie? I used to have everything, now I have nothing because of her! And what did y'all do? You all took her side. You all chose her over me. I will destroy her. I will ruin all of you, Enoch. I will take all she has one by one. " She concluded with a maniacal grin.
Enoch stared wide-eyed in pity and fear.
"You're crazy." He whispered.
"Pssh, I'm not the one who got hooked on morphine. So what's it gonna be, You or Elijah?"
