Aria settled into her normal routine as an elementary school student, juggling her mischievous antics and hidden genius. She had almost forgotten about the Velasco family's interest in her work until one day, during math class, her teacher, Mrs. Delgado, called her to the front of the room.
“Aria, I’d like to talk to you after class,” the teacher said with a smile.
When the bell rang, Aria approached Mrs. Delgado, who beamed at her. “Aria, we’ve decided to select you as our representative for the upcoming Math Quiz Bee. Your scores are excellent, and we believe you have a strong chance of winning.”
Aria blinked. “Oh. A quiz bee?”
Mrs. Delgado nodded enthusiastically. “Yes, and it’s a great opportunity! It will be held at the district level, and if you win, you’ll move on to the regionals.”
Aria tilted her head, pretending to be hesitant. “Hmm… is there a prize?”
Mrs. Delgado was slightly taken aback. “Well, yes. There’s a cash prize for the top three winners.”
Aria immediately put on a pitiful expression. “Oh, that’s wonderful! You see, my father has medical expenses, and I want to help my family. If I win, I can use the prize money for his treatment.”
Mrs. Delgado’s eyes softened with sympathy. “Oh, Aria... That’s very thoughtful of you.”
Aria clasped her hands together, looking like a determined yet fragile child. “Then I’ll do my best, Mrs. Delgado!”
 
Later that afternoon, Aria walked home beside her older brother, Marco, a wide grin on her face.
“Marco! Guess what? I’m going to represent the school in the Math Quiz Bee!”
Marco raised an eyebrow, smirking. “Seriously? You’re a little monster, you know that?”
Aria pouted dramatically. “Hey! I’m an adorable little monster, thank you very much. Besides, I have a good reason for doing this.”
Marco crossed his arms, amused. “Oh? And what noble cause have you taken up this time?”
Aria puffed out her chest, a playful glint in her eyes. “The prize money! I can use it to help with Dad’s treatment.”
Marco blinked, caught off guard for a moment before ruffling her hair affectionately. “You really are something else, you know that?”
Aria huffed, fixing her hair. “I take that as a compliment!”
Marco chuckled. “Alright then, little genius. Let’s go tell Dad. He’ll be proud.”
Excited, Aria grabbed his hand and tugged him forward. “Then let’s hurry!”
As they walked toward the hospital, Aria swung their joined hands back and forth. “Do you think Dad will be surprised?”
Marco glanced down at her, grinning. “Surprised? Definitely. But more than that, he’s going to be proud. You know how much he loves seeing us do well.”
Aria sighed dreamily. “Then I have to win, no matter what.”
Marco shook his head, amused. “Just don’t forget to have fun, okay? It’s not all about winning.”
Aria looked at him incredulously. “Says the guy who cried for three days when he lost that basketball championship in middle school.”
Marco groaned. “Ugh, why do you always bring that up?!”
Aria giggled, sticking out her tongue. “Because it was hilarious!”
Laughing and teasing each other, the siblings continued toward the hospital, their bond evident in every word and gesture. Despite the struggles their family faced, moments like these reminded them that they always had each other. And for Aria, that was more than enough motivation to win the quiz bee.
Arriving at the hospital, they stepped into their father’s room to find him sitting up in bed, looking much better than before. Their mother, Rosa, was adjusting his pillows when she noticed them enter.
“Ah, you two are here! Your father was just asking about you,” Rosa said warmly.
Manuel Reyes gave his children a tired but happy smile. “Hey, kids.”
“Dad!” Aria ran up to his bedside, taking his hand in hers. “I have great news!”
“Oh?” Manuel chuckled, stroking her hair gently. “Let’s hear it, then.”
Aria straightened her back and announced proudly, “I’ve been chosen to represent my school in the Math Quiz Bee!”
Manuel’s eyes widened, and he looked between her and Marco. “Is that so?”
Marco nodded, smiling. “Yep. And she’s only in elementary school! Pretty amazing, huh?”
Rosa clasped her hands together in delight. “That’s wonderful, sweetheart! We’re so proud of you.”
Aria grinned before lowering her voice, her eyes twinkling mischievously. “And there’s a cash prize.”
Manuel let out a breathy laugh. “Ah, now I see the real motivation.”
Aria pouted playfully. “Hey, I’d still win even without the prize, but… this way, I can help with your medical expenses.”
A flicker of emotion passed through Manuel’s eyes as he squeezed her hand. “Aria… that’s really sweet of you. But don’t put too much pressure on yourself, alright?”
“I won’t, I promise!” Aria beamed. “I’ll win for you and for our family!”
Manuel chuckled, looking at Marco. “And you’re supporting her, right?”
Marco smirked. “Of course. Someone has to keep her from taking over the world.”
The room filled with laughter, warmth, and love. No matter how difficult things were, moments like these reminded them all of what truly mattered—family.
As they left the hospital that evening, Aria held Marco’s hand tightly, staring up at the darkening sky. She felt a deep sense of gratitude welling up in her chest.
“I’m really lucky to have you all,” she murmured, her voice unusually soft.
Marco glanced at her, surprised by the sudden change in tone. “Of course, you are. We’re an awesome family.”
Aria chuckled before her eyes grew serious. “One day, I’ll make sure we don’t have to struggle anymore. I’ll make sure we can live comfortably… maybe even in luxury.”
Marco raised an eyebrow, amused. “Luxury, huh?”
Aria grinned. “Why not? I don’t just want to survive—I want to give Mom and Dad everything they deserve. And you, too.”
Marco squeezed her hand reassuringly. “Well, if anyone can do it, it’s you.”
Aria nodded to herself, determination lighting up her face. She would win the quiz bee—not just for the prize, but as a step toward something bigger. Her family deserved the best, and she would make sure they got it.
