Chapter 7 - Last Stand

The search for Riley led them to a small, dimly lit room behind the infirmary, a place they hadn’t noticed before. Evelyn knocked on the door, but when there was no response, she pushed it open.
Inside, Riley was standing with Mara, speaking in low tones. The moment they saw Evelyn, both women stiffened.
“What’s going on?” Evelyn demanded.
Riley stepped forward quickly, her eyes darting nervously toward Mara. “We need to talk.”
Mara crossed her arms. “I think it’s time you understood exactly what’s happening here.”
Evelyn’s heart skipped a beat. She stepped inside the room, her eyes narrowing. “I don’t need any more games. What are you hiding?”
Riley hesitated, then spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. “There’s a group inside the settlement. They’ve been planning something. They’re gathering people, making promises of food, protection. But it’s all a lie.”
Mara’s eyes flickered with anger. “You’re wrong. We’re trying to keep everyone alive. No one else is coming to help us. If they don’t understand that, they’ll have to face the consequences.”
Evelyn shook her head. “You’re threatening your own people?”
“People have to be controlled to survive,” Mara said harshly. “You don’t get it, do you? It’s kill or be killed. You should be grateful I’m giving you a chance.”
Riley stepped between them. “We don’t have time to argue. They’re already moving. We have to stop them before it gets worse.”
Evelyn’s stomach churned. “Who is ‘they’? Who’s pulling the strings here?”
Mara’s lips tightened. “You’ll know soon enough.”
The settlement had begun to stir. People were gathering near the gates, and there was a palpable sense of unrest. Evelyn, Mason, and Riley hurried to join the crowd. As they approached, Evelyn saw a familiar figure, a man she hadn’t noticed before, standing tall among the group. His face was sharp, his eyes dark with determination.
That man was speaking to the crowd. “We’ve been promised supplies. We’ve been promised safety. And what do we get? More lies! It’s time to take control. We can’t keep waiting for someone else to save us.”
The crowd murmured, unsure, but it was clear they were listening.
Evelyn recognized the danger immediately. This wasn’t just an angry mob. This was a group with a plan and that plan wasn’t about surviving. It was about taking over.
Riley grabbed Evelyn’s arm. “That’s him,” she whispered. “His name is Kaleb. He’s the one who’s been spreading lies.”
Mara stood beside them, her expression grim. “He’s been stirring up trouble for days. He’s getting too many people to follow him.”
Evelyn’s heart raced. “How many people does he have behind him?”
Mara’s eyes flickered with unease. “Enough to start a fight.”
“Then we stop him before it gets worse,” Evelyn said, her voice steely.
The tension in the settlement grew as Kaleb and his followers continued to rally the people. But before anything could escalate, a loud crash sounded from the edge of the settlement. The gates, weak and poorly reinforced, buckled under the pressure.
Evelyn’s breath caught in her throat as a flood of infected poured through the opening, their grotesque forms charging forward like an unstoppable wave.
The group that had been rallying was immediately thrown into chaos. People screamed, running in all directions as the infected descended upon them.
“Get inside!” Mara shouted, her voice cracking with panic.
Evelyn didn’t need to be told twice. She grabbed Mason’s arm, pulling him toward the nearest building, her heart hammering in her chest.
But as they moved, Evelyn’s eyes caught Riley fighting her way through the chaos, determined to keep the people alive. She wasn’t running. She was standing her ground.
Mason pulled her away, his face pale. “We need to go!”
Evelyn hesitated for a split second, torn between the people she had come to care about and the overwhelming danger now closing in. She turned and ran, pushing herself harder as the sound of fighting filled the air.
They made it inside a sturdy building just as the gates were torn apart, the infected flooding the settlement. Evelyn’s mind raced as she realized just how bad things had become.
But as the doors slammed shut, the truth hit her harder than the fear of what was coming. Kaleb’s rebellion, Mara’s secrets, and Riley’s fight, they were all distractions. The real battle had only just begun.
And Evelyn wasn’t sure who would survive it.
The air inside the building was thick with the smell of dust and sweat. Evelyn could hear the chaos outside, the screams, the desperate calls for help. It was all happening too fast. She pressed herself against the wall, her breath shallow, trying to gather her thoughts.
“We need a plan,” Mason said, his voice low and urgent. He was crouched beside her, his face grim, his eyes scanning the windows.
Evelyn nodded, but her mind was racing. The settlement was overrun, the infected flooding in from every corner. And with Kaleb’s group still in the chaos, she didn’t know who would survive this. The idea of being trapped in this building, isolated from everyone, felt like a death sentence.
“Riley’s still out there,” she said, her voice tight with worry.
Mason’s eyes flickered toward the door. “We can’t wait for her. We need to get out now, while we still have a chance.”
Evelyn shook her head. “We can’t just leave them. We can’t leave anyone behind.”
Mason stared at her, his jaw clenched. “We don’t have time for heroics, Evelyn. We need to survive. That’s all that matters right now.”
His words stung, but she knew he was right. She had to make a choice.
“Fine,” Evelyn said, standing up and grabbing a nearby metal rod. “We get out, but we find Riley on the way.”
The building creaked as the infected drew closer. Through the windows, Evelyn saw the movement, dark figures in the distance, slowly closing in.
“We can’t go out through the front,” Mason said, moving toward the back door. “We’ll have to find another way.”
Evelyn followed him, her heart racing. She couldn’t lose anyone else. Not like this.
They moved quietly, staying low and sticking to the shadows. The infected were too close now. She could hear their guttural growls and shuffling feet.
As they reached the rear of the building, Mason pushed open a door, revealing an alley that led to the outskirts of the settlement. They were almost out... almost free.
But then, a familiar voice echoed through the alley.
“Evelyn! Mason!”
It was Riley. She was standing at the entrance to the alley, her clothes torn, her face streaked with dirt and blood. Behind her, Kaleb and a few of his followers were slowly advancing, their eyes wild with desperation.
“We don’t have time!” Riley shouted. “They’re right behind me! We need to go, now!”
Evelyn hesitated, the weight of the decision pressing down on her. Kaleb’s group had already shown they were willing to do anything to survive, but were they too far gone?
“Come on!” Riley urged, her voice cracking. “We have to leave or they’ll kill us all!”
Evelyn looked at Mason, who gave her a grim nod. They couldn’t stay. Not with the infected closing in and Kaleb’s group this close.
“Let’s go,” Evelyn said, her voice firm.
They moved quickly, staying ahead of Kaleb’s group and the infected. The town was in chaos, the streets crawling with the dead. Every turn felt like a gamble, but they kept pushing forward, determined to get out of the settlement.
Riley led the way, her eyes darting over her shoulder every few steps. She seemed to know exactly where she was going, though Evelyn didn’t trust her completely.
“Where are we headed?” Evelyn asked, keeping her voice low.
“To the old bridge,” Riley said. “It’s the only way out of here.”
Evelyn didn’t question it. The bridge was their only chance now. They had no other choice but to keep moving.
As they neared the bridge, the sound of footsteps behind them grew louder. Kaleb’s group was closing in, and the infected weren’t far behind. The narrow bridge was the only way out, but it wouldn’t hold both groups for long.
“Get ready,” Riley warned. “We need to make it to the other side before they catch up.”
The bridge loomed ahead, its wooden planks creaking under the weight of time. It was barely holding together, but it was their only escape route.
“Move!” Mason shouted.
They sprinted toward the bridge, adrenaline fueling their legs. Behind them, the sound of Kaleb’s group grew louder, and the infected were right on their heels. Evelyn’s heart pounded in her chest as they reached the bridge, the air thick with tension.
Just as they stepped onto the bridge, Kaleb’s voice rang out. “Stop! You’re not going anywhere!”
Evelyn turned to see Kaleb and his followers blocking the entrance to the bridge. There was nowhere to run.
“You think you can leave just like that?” Kaleb’s voice was twisted with anger. “This is our chance, and you’re not taking it from us!”
Riley stepped forward, her hands shaking. “This isn’t your fight, Kaleb. This is about survival.”
Kaleb laughed, a dark sound that echoed across the bridge. “Survival?” He sneered. “Survival means taking control, Riley. You should have known that by now.”
Riley’s expression hardened. “I’ve known it all along. But you—” She took a step closer, her voice growing louder. “You’re just a coward who’ll do anything to get ahead. You’re not about survival. You’re about power.”
Evelyn’s breath caught in her throat as Kaleb’s face twisted in fury. “You’re going to regret that, Riley. All of you are.”
