Chapter 15
Nina's Point of View
The following day felt like walking through thick fog. The weight of Daniel’s words echoed in my mind as I tried to make sense of the strange encounter in the library. He had said the game was over, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to it, something that he hadn’t told me, something I was still missing.
I kept replaying the image of Liam passing off that envelope, the way he treated it with such care and reverence. Whatever was in that envelope, it had to be important. I needed to get my hands on it.
The Web Tightens
As I walked through the school halls, my thoughts remained clouded with uncertainty. There were whispers in the air, the atmosphere thick with tension as if everyone knew something I didn’t. The hallways were full of students, but their eyes seemed to dart away whenever they caught my gaze, as if they were all in on some secret that excluded me. I didn’t like it.
And then, I saw her.
Charlotte was standing by her usual locker, flanked by her group of followers, her expression distant, her eyes cold. She hadn’t looked at me since our last conversation—her betrayal still hanging between us like a wall. But today, something was different. I could feel the storm brewing behind her icy facade. She wasn’t the confident leader anymore; she was guarded, like she was bracing for something.
I walked past her without a word, feeling the familiar pang of betrayal stab at my chest. But as I did, she called out to me.
“Nina,” she said, her voice almost a whisper. “You should leave this alone. You have no idea what you’re dealing with.”
I stopped in my tracks, my heart racing. “What do you mean?” I turned to face her, trying to read the expression in her eyes.
Charlotte glanced over her shoulder, making sure no one was paying attention. “I know what you’re doing. Trying to take down Daniel and Liam. But you don’t understand. They’re not the real threat. You’re playing into their hands, and you don’t even know it.”
The words hung in the air between us, heavy with unspoken meaning. “What are you talking about?” I asked, the panic rising in my chest.
Charlotte shook her head, her eyes filled with a mixture of regret and fear. “It’s too late, Nina. They already know what you’re planning. They’ll come for you soon. You need to stop, before it’s too late.”
Before I could respond, Charlotte turned and walked away, her followers trailing behind her like shadows. Her warning felt like a final attempt to pull me back from the edge, but I wasn’t ready to back down. I couldn’t. I had come too far to stop now.
Pieces Falling into Place
I spent the rest of the day in a haze, trying to process Charlotte’s cryptic warning while still wrestling with my growing doubts about everything. Was she trying to protect me? Or was this just another manipulation, a last-ditch effort to get me to stop digging?
I needed answers, and the only way to get them was to keep moving forward.
That afternoon, I decided to take a risk. I couldn’t just sit around and wait for Daniel and Liam to make their next move. I had to find that envelope. I had to get my hands on it before they did something irreversible.
The only way I could think to do that was to confront Liam. He was the key to everything—the one who held the strings, the one who had been the most elusive. And if I could get close enough, maybe I could figure out what the envelope was, and why it mattered.
I found him later that evening, sitting alone on the school’s rooftop, staring out over the city. The soft breeze stirred his hair, and for a moment, he looked almost vulnerable. But I knew better.
I approached him cautiously, careful not to alert him to my presence.
“What are you doing up here?” I asked, my voice casual but sharp with intent.
Liam didn’t turn around immediately. He just stayed there, staring into the distance. “I like the view,” he said softly. “It’s quiet up here. Peaceful.”
I stepped closer, studying him. “I thought you might be planning your next move.”
That finally got his attention. He turned to look at me, his eyes narrowed, calculating. “You’ve been following me, haven’t you?”
I didn’t answer. Instead, I crossed my arms, trying to keep my composure. “I want to know what’s in the envelope. What are you planning, Liam?”
Liam’s lips curled into a small smile. “You’re getting too curious for your own good, Nina.”
I took a step closer. “What is it? What’s in the envelope? I need to know.”
He stood up slowly, his posture relaxed but tense. “You don’t know what you’re asking. This isn’t a game anymore, Nina. If you want to understand what’s really going on, you’ll have to be prepared for the consequences.”
I swallowed hard, my heart pounding in my chest. “I don’t care about the consequences. I just want the truth.”
Liam’s expression darkened. “The truth is something you can’t unsee. Once you know, there’s no going back. Are you sure you want that?”
I nodded, my resolve hardening. “I’m sure.”
For a moment, he just looked at me, as if weighing my words. Then, without another word, he turned and started walking toward the stairs leading back into the building. “Fine. You’ll see soon enough.”
The Revelation
Later that night, I sat in my room, staring at the clock as the minutes ticked by. I was on edge, waiting for something—anything—that would tell me what Liam had meant. The atmosphere in the air felt suffocating, like the world was holding its breath, waiting for the next big move.
And then, it came.
My phone buzzed with a single message. It was from an unknown number.
“Meet me at the old warehouse by the docks. Midnight. If you want the truth.”
My pulse quickened. It was a risk, but there was no going back. I knew what I had to do.
I grabbed my jacket, slipped quietly out of the house, and made my way to the warehouse.
When I arrived, the place was eerily quiet, bathed in the dim light of a flickering streetlamp. The air smelled of salt and rust, the sound of distant waves crashing against the shore.
I stepped inside the dark building, the echoes of my footsteps bouncing off the cold concrete walls. And then, I saw him.
Liam was standing in the shadows, his figure barely visible against the darkness. But I could see the glint of something in his hand.
“You wanted the truth,” he said, his voice low and almost amused. “Well, now you’re going to get it.”
He stepped forward, and for the first time, I saw what he was holding—a file, thick with papers, and the envelope I had been searching for.
The air felt thick with tension as he handed me the file, and I knew that once I opened it, everything would change.
“Read it,” he said. “This is what you’ve been looking for.”
My hands shook as I opened the file, the truth written in black and white—hidden in plain sight all along. The pieces of the puzzle that had eluded me for so long suddenly clicked into place.
And what I found was more horrifying than I could have ever imagined.
The truth wasn’t just about Daniel, Liam, or even Charlotte. It was about something far darker, something deeper. The real game was just beginning.Download Novelah App
