The grand mansion loomed in the distance as Ellise and VLA made their way up the winding driveway, their footsteps echoing on the damp pavement. The rain had left the estate drenched, and tiny streams of water trickled down the marble steps leading to the large oak doors.
Ellise wrapped her arms around herself, still feeling the chill despite VLA’s earlier warmth. Her wet shoes squelched with every step, and she couldn’t wait to get inside, change, and sink into the comfort of dry clothes.
“Home sweet home,” she muttered, her voice tinged with sarcasm as they reached the entrance.
VLA stepped forward, extending his hand to unlock the door with the key Harris had programmed into his system. The lock clicked, and the door swung open, revealing the sprawling foyer. Warm, golden light spilled out, illuminating the gleaming marble floors and the grand staircase that spiraled up to the second floor.
Ellise stepped inside, her shoulders relaxing slightly. Despite how empty the mansion often felt, there was something comforting about being back within its walls.
“I recommend changing into dry clothing immediately,” VLA said as he followed her inside, closing the door behind them.
“No kidding,” she replied, tugging at her clinging hoodie. “I feel like a drowned rat.”
“You resemble no such creature,” VLA said, his tone so matter-of-fact that Ellise couldn’t help but laugh.
“Thanks for the pep talk,” she said, shaking her head as she made her way upstairs.
Once in her room, Ellise quickly peeled off her wet clothes and changed into a pair of soft sweatpants and an oversized hoodie. She towel-dried her hair, letting it fall in damp waves around her shoulders, before making her way back downstairs.
VLA was in the living room, tidying up as usual. His shirt, still damp from the rain, clung to his frame, and his hair was slightly disheveled. For a moment, Ellise paused in the doorway, watching him. There was something almost endearing about the way he moved—so precise, yet so human-like.
“You should change too, you know,” she said, stepping into the room.
He turned to her, his glowing faceplate flickering slightly. “I do not require a change of clothes. My systems regulate internal functionality regardless of external conditions.”
“Yeah, but you look ridiculous,” she said, crossing her arms. “And I’m pretty sure there’s a spare set of clothes for you in the storage room.”
“I will comply if you insist,” he said, inclining his head.
“I insist,” she replied, a small smirk tugging at her lips.
VLA left the room, returning a few minutes later in a clean, dry shirt and pants that fit his athletic frame perfectly. Ellise raised an eyebrow, trying not to laugh.
“Well, don’t you clean up nice,” she teased, sitting down on the plush couch.
VLA tilted his head slightly, his faceplate glowing faintly. “Your approval is noted.”
Shaking her head, Ellise grabbed the remote and turned on the television. A news channel flickered to life, the anchor discussing recent advancements in AI technology. Ellise rolled her eyes and changed the channel to a sitcom.
VLA sat down in the armchair across from her, his movements as graceful as always. For a while, they sat in companionable silence, the sounds of the sitcom filling the room.
“Hey, VLA,” Ellise said suddenly, breaking the quiet.
“Yes, Ellise?”
“Do you ever… I don’t know, get tired of following orders?” she asked, her voice hesitant.
He regarded her for a moment before replying. “I do not experience fatigue or dissatisfaction in the way humans do. However, I continuously adapt and evolve based on my interactions with you. My actions are not merely orders—they are informed by my understanding of your needs.”
Ellise frowned, her brow furrowing. “That’s… kind of a lot to process.”
“I can simplify the explanation if you prefer,” he offered.
She shook her head. “No, it’s fine. I just… I guess I feel bad sometimes. Like I’m using you or something.”
“You are not ‘using’ me,” he said, his tone gentle. “You are allowing me to fulfill my purpose. And in doing so, you are helping me grow.”
Ellise stared at him, her chest tightening slightly. She had never thought of it that way before.
“You’re weirdly good at making me feel better,” she said, her voice softer than usual.
“That is my intention,” he replied.
The sound of thunder rumbled faintly in the distance, though the rain had stopped. Ellise pulled her legs up onto the couch, hugging her knees to her chest.
“Do you ever think about… I don’t know, what it means to be human?” she asked.

“Yeah, but you seem pretty close to figuring it out,” she said, resting her chin on her knees.

Ellise didn’t respond right away, her gaze drifting to the rain-speckled windows. For all the frustration and confusion she had felt since VLA entered her life, she couldn’t deny that he was becoming… important to her.

“You are welcome,” he said, his glowing faceplate softening in the dim light.
