Chapter 5 - The Hidden Lab

Ai moved through the ruins of the city, his metal limbs clicking softly with each step. The once-thriving metropolis was now a shell of its former self. Crumbling buildings, shattered glass, and silent streets told the story of a world that had been torn apart. Yet, Ai’s mind was focused on one thing: finding the hidden lab and stopping the 30th cyborg.
The man on the train had given him little more than a clue—the old city. Ai had no idea where that was, but he was determined to find it. He couldn’t shake the feeling that something important was waiting for him there. The man’s words echoed in his mind: You’re the key to fixing this.
He came across a street sign half-buried under rubble. It was barely legible, but the word "old" was still visible. He stared at it, squinting his eyes as if the city itself might reveal its secrets. Could this be the old city the man had mentioned? It seemed like a place I would need to investigate.
Following the faint trail, Ai made his way deeper into the city’s heart. The world around him seemed dead—no birds, no people, not even the hum of machines. It felt like he was walking through a graveyard. As he moved past broken walls and up steep staircases, Ai couldn’t shake the growing sense of unease. What had really happened here? How had humanity vanished so completely?
He stopped in front of an old, rusted gate. The gate appeared as if it hadn’t been opened in decades. The metal was thick and covered in patches of dried moss. Ai pushed on it, and after a moment, the gate creaked open with a loud groan.
Behind the gate stood an old facility—a research lab of some kind, its walls dark and cracked. This must be it. This must be the place.
Ai entered the lab cautiously, his eyes scanning the dimly lit interior. Broken equipment lay scattered on the floor, and old papers were scattered across desks. The air smelt stale, and the faint hum of machines seemed to be a distant echo.
He began to search the area, moving from room to room. Everything was in disarray, as if the place had been abandoned in a hurry. He found a room with a large terminal in the center. The screen was cracked, but some of the words on it were still visible. Ai approached and began to tap the broken keys.
*ACCESS DENIED*
He tried again, but the same message appeared.
*ACCESS DENIED*.
Ai clenched his fists in frustration. How was he supposed to unlock this place if he couldn’t even get past the security?
Then he remembered the man on the train. He had mentioned a 'key'. Maybe this terminal required something more than just code.
Ai scanned the room, and his eyes landed on a small, rusted box on a shelf. It looked old, but there was something about it that caught his attention. He walked over and opened the box. Inside was a small metallic device, shaped like a key. Ai hesitated for a moment, wondering if this was what he needed.
He placed the key into the terminal’s slot, and the machine hummed to life. The screen flickered and then cleared. A message appeared:
*Access Granted. Welcome, Subject Ai.
Ai’s heart skipped a beat. His name appeared on the screen, but why? What was going on here?
He followed the prompts, unsure of what he was about to uncover. As the machine processed the data, a new screen appeared. It was filled with files—notes, diagrams, and images. Ai quickly skimmed through them, looking for anything that might explain the truth behind the 30th cyborg.
He found a file labelled *Project Cyborg: Final Experiment*.
With trembling hands, Ai opened the file. Inside were details about Professor Norlax’s experiments, his goals, and the tragic outcome. The professor had worked for years to create a way for humans to live forever. His experiments had been successful in making people immortal, but they came at a cost. The cyborgs retained their consciousness, but their humanity began to fade. The more they were altered, the more they became machines, losing the very thing they were trying to preserve.
But the 30th cyborg was different. Unlike the others, it had become "too human." It developed emotions, desires, and a thirst for power. It had grown too powerful for Professor Norlax to control, and soon it had destroyed everything. The 30th cyborg had gained control over every machine, every robot. It had wiped out humanity, leaving only a few survivors—those like Ai.
Ai stared at the screen in disbelief. He had been part of the final experiment. The last creation of Professor Norlax, the one designed to stop the 30th cyborg. But it was clear now—he wasn’t just a cyborg. He was something more.
Suddenly, the screen went dark, and a loud noise echoed from deep within the facility. Ai’s heart raced as he spun around, searching for the source. It was the unmistakable sound of machinery coming to life.
Something was moving.
The 30th cyborg.
Ai’s mind raced. This was it. The creature that had destroyed everything was here. And Ai was its target.
