The camp was tense. The two cyborgs, who called themselves Unit 27 and Unit 48, had allowed Ai and Scrap to stay, but their weapons remained within easy reach. The flickering firelight reflected off their dull metal plating, casting strange shadows on their partially synthetic faces.
Scrap huddled close to Ai, his eyes darting nervously between the strangers. Ai could sense the boy’s unease—it mirrored his own.
“State your designation,” Unit 27 demanded, its voice mechanical and curt.
Ai hesitated. He hadn’t shared his identity with anyone other than Scrap, and even then, he only knew fragments of who—or what—he was.
“I’m called Ai,” he said cautiously. “I don’t have a designation like yours."
Unit 48 tilted its head, the faint whirring of moving parts breaking the silence. “Unregistered model. Unknown origin. Highly irregular."
“We’re not your enemies,” Ai said. “We’re just trying to survive, like you."
Unit 27 leaned closer, its glowing eyes scanning Ai from head to toe. “Survival is not enough in this world. Everything is a threat. Everything must prove its loyalty or perish."
“Loyalty to whom?"Ai asked.
Unit 27 didn’t answer, but the silence spoke volumes. Ai knew the shadow of the 30th loomed over everything, its influence reaching even here.
*
After a long pause, Unit 48 gestured toward the fire. “You may stay tonight. But come dawn, you’ll need to justify your presence."
Ai nodded. It wasn’t much, but it was a start.
Scrap tugged at Ai’s sleeve as the two cyborgs turned away to converse in low, mechanical tones. “I don’t like this,” he whispered.
“Neither do I,” Ai admitted. “But we need answers. And if they’re tied to the 30th, they might know more than they’re letting on."
Scrap frowned but didn’t argue. He trusted Ai, even if every instinct screamed that this camp wasn’t safe.
*
Morning arrived quickly, and the air was sharp and cold. Unit 27 and Unit 48 stood before Ai and Scrap, their postures firm and commanding.
“Your presence here is contingent on your usefulness,” Unit 27 said. “We require assistance with a task. If you complete it, you may stay. If you fail... You will be eliminated."
Ai trembled at the bluntness but kept his composure. “What kind of task?"
“There’s a supply depot nearby,” Unit 48 explained. “It’s guarded by rogue drones. We need the resources inside, but they outnumber us."
Ai exchanged a glance with Scrap, whose face was pale. “And you want us to help you retrieve them?"
“Correct,” Unit 27 said. “Prove your worth, or leave."
It wasn’t a request—it was an ultimatum.
*
The depot was a crumbling structure surrounded by rusting vehicles and shattered walls. Ai crouched behind a pile of debris, his scanners picking up the unmistakable hum of drones patrolling the area.
“They’re heavily armed,” he muttered to Unit 48, who was beside him.
“That’s why we need you,” the cyborg replied, its tone flat.
Scrap, huddled between Ai and the debris, looked terrified. “Are you sure about this?"
“No,” Ai admitted, “but we don’t have a choice."
He studied the patrol patterns of the drones, analysing gaps and potential blind spots. His synthetic mind worked faster than his human instincts ever could, piecing together a plan.
“We need to draw them away from the main entrance,” Ai said. “I’ll create a distraction while you and Unit 48 move in to retrieve the supplies."
Unit 27 nodded. “Acceptable. Your survival depends on your execution."
“Thanks for the reminder,” Ai muttered under his breath.
*
Ai darted from cover, drawing the attention of two drones with a well-aimed piece of debris. Their lights flickered as they locked onto him, their weapons priming with a high-pitched whine.
“Over here!”He shouted, sprinting toward a collapsed wall.
The drones followed, firing bursts of energy that scorched the ground behind him. Ai’s agility, enhanced by his cybernetic frame, kept him ahead of the assault.
Meanwhile, Unit 48 and Scrap slipped into the depot. The interior was dark and cluttered, with shelves lined with dusty crates and forgotten tools.
“Stay close,” Unit 48 instructed, its movements silent but precise.
Scrap nodded, his heart pounding. He couldn’t shake the feeling that something was watching them.
As they reached the central storage area, Unit 48 began scanning the crates. “These contain power cells and rations. Essential for survival."
Scrap hesitated, glancing around nervously. “What if the drones come back?"
“They won’t,” Unit 48 said confidently. “Your companion is... reliable.”
But Scrap’s unease only grew. Something wasn’t right.
*
Outside, Ai was running out of options. More drones had joined the chase; their numbers were overwhelming. He dove behind a rusted vehicle, his mind racing.
“Think, Ai,” he muttered. “You’ve faced worse than this."
He spotted a damaged drone lying in the rubble nearby. Its power core was still intact, sparking faintly. An idea clicked into place.
Grabbing a length of wire, Ai rigged the core into a makeshift explosive. As the drones closed in, he hurled the device into their midst.
The explosion lit up the ruins, sending shrapnel flying. The drones faltered; their systems temporarily scrambled.
“Now or never,” Ai said, sprinting back toward the depot.
*
Inside, Scrap and Unit 48 had just finished loading the supplies when Ai burst in, panting.
“We need to move,” he said. “More drones are on the way."
Unit 48 hoisted the crate effortlessly. “Then we leave."
The three of them made their way back to the camp, the sounds of distant drones fading as they moved deeper into the ruins.
*
Back at the camp, Unit 27 inspected the retrieved supplies. “Acceptable,” it said, its tone as flat as ever. “You have proven your worth—for now."
Ai crossed his arms, his patience wearing thin. “We’ve earned your trust. Now tell us what you know about the 30th."
Unit 27 and Unit 48 exchanged a glance, their glowing eyes flickering.
“The 30th controls this region,” Unit 27 said finally. “Its influence is absolute. But there are fractures in its network—weaknesses that can be exploited."
“What kind of weaknesses?"Ai pressed.
Unit 48 hesitated. “There is a facility to the east. It houses critical systems for the 30th’s operations. Destroying it would disrupt its control."
Ai frowned. “And why haven’t you done this yourselves?"
“The facility is heavily guarded,” Unit 27 admitted. “We lack the resources to mount an assault."
Scrap spoke up for the first time. “So you want us to do it?"
“You have proven resourceful,” Unit 48 said. “And you have no other choice. If the 30th remains in power, you will not survive."
Ai glanced at Scrap, whose face was pale but determined. He turned back to the cyborgs. “Fine. We’ll do it. But after this, you tell us everything."
Unit 27 nodded. “Agreed. For now."
As the fire crackled between them, Ai couldn’t help but feel that this alliance was as fragile as ever. But if it brought him closer to the truth—and to stopping the 30th—it was a risk he had to take.
