Chapter 7: The Plea.

As I pulled into my driveway, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. Finally, I was home, away from the chaos of the bar and Lydia's unwanted advances. The quiet darkness of the night enveloped me, a soothing balm for my frazzled nerves.
But as I approached my apartment, a nagging feeling crept up my spine. Something didn't feel right. The air seemed charged with tension, like the moments before a storm.
I reached for the door handle, and my heart sank. The door was unlocked.
My mind racing, I pushed open the door and stepped inside, my senses on high alert. The apartment was dimly lit, the only sound the soft hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.
That's when I saw her.
Rachel.
Sitting on my couch, her eyes red-rimmed from crying. Her face was pale, her skin drawn tight over her cheekbones.
My anger flared, fueled by her audacity. How dare she show up here, uninvited?
"What are you doing here?" I demanded, my voice low and menacing. I stood tall, my feet shoulder-width apart, my arms crossed over my chest.
Rachel sprang to her feet, her hands extended like a supplicant. "Gabriel, please listen," she begged, her voice trembling.
"How did you get in?" I growled, my eyes scanning the room for signs of forced entry. Had she broken in?
Rachel hesitated before answering. "I still have a spare key," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
My anger boiled over. "You have no right to be here," I spat, my words dripping with venom. "You lost that right when you betrayed me."
Rachel took a step closer, her voice pleading. "Gabriel, I know I hurt you. But I love you. I want a second chance."
I laughed, incredulous. "A second chance? After what you did?" I repeated, my voice rising. "You think you can just waltz back in here and expect me to forgive and forget?"
Rachel's eyes welled up with tears. "I was blind, Gabriel. I didn't see what I had until it was too late."
"Too late?" I repeated, my voice heavy with sarcasm. "You think it's just a matter of 'too late'? You destroyed me, Rachel. You shattered my trust, my heart."
Rachel's face crumpled, but I felt no pity. Only anger and a deep-seated hurt.
"Leave," I ordered, my voice firm. "Now."
Rachel's hands grasped my arm, her touch sending a shiver of revulsion through me.
"Gabriel, please," she whispered.
I shook her off, my anger erupting. "Get out! You're not welcome here. You're not welcome in my life."
Rachel's eyes flashed with desperation. "Gabriel, don't do this. I'll do anything."
"Anything?" I repeated, my voice dripping with disdain. "You've already done enough. You've already hurt me enough."
With a sudden chill, I realized I needed to take drastic measures.
"Rachel, if you don't leave now, I'll call the police. I'll charge you with harassment."
Rachel's eyes widened in shock. "Gabriel, no."
"Yes," I said, my voice firm. "I mean it. Leave. Now. And don't come back."
With a sob, Rachel turned and fled, leaving me shaken but resolute.
I locked the door behind her, my heart still racing. I leaned against the door, my eyes closed, and took a deep breath.
But as I stood there, I knew I'd made the right decision.
I would protect myself, no matter what.
I would heal, and I would move on.
Without Rachel.
I paced back and forth across my living room, my mind racing with thoughts of Rachel's unexpected visit. My heart still pounded in my chest, and my anger simmered just below the surface, threatening to boil over at any moment.
The image of Rachel sitting on my couch, her eyes red-rimmed from crying, haunted me. Her words echoed in my mind: "Gabriel, I love you. I want a second chance." The audacity.
I couldn't shake off the feeling of unease that lingered long after she'd left. My apartment, once a sanctuary, now felt violated.
I needed to calm down, but my mind refused to cooperate. My thoughts swirled in a vortex of anger, hurt, and frustration.
That's when I remembered Jefferson's words of wisdom: "Whenever you need someone to talk to, I'm here." His calm and collected demeanor was exactly what I needed to counterbalance my turmoil.
I grabbed my phone and dialed Jefferson's number, hoping he'd answer. The phone rang several times, each ring feeling like an eternity.
Finally, Jefferson's calm voice came on the line.
"Hey, Gabriel. What's up?" he asked, his tone warm and inviting.
"Jefferson, I need your help," I said, my voice shaking, betraying my emotions.
"What's going on?" Jefferson asked, his concern palpable.
"Rachel showed up at my apartment," I explained, trying to keep my emotions in check.
"What? How did she get in?" Jefferson demanded, his voice firm.
"She still had a spare key," I replied, my anger flaring.
"Gabriel, that's harassment. You need to take action," Jefferson said firmly.
"I know. I told her to leave, and I threatened to call the police if she didn't," I said, replaying the confrontation in my mind.
"Good. You need to protect yourself," Jefferson said. "But how are you feeling right now?"
"Honestly? I'm a mess," I admitted, feeling a wave of emotion wash over me.
"Take a deep breath, Gabriel," Jefferson instructed. "Let's break this down. What's really bothering you?"
"I don't know... everything, I guess," I replied, feeling overwhelmed.
"Okay, let's start with Rachel. What did she want?" Jefferson asked.
"She wants a second chance," I said, the words tasting bitter.
"And what do you want?" Jefferson asked.
"I want her to leave me alone," I replied, my voice firm.
"Then that's exactly what you need to do," Jefferson said. "Set boundaries, Gabriel. Make it clear you're not interested."
"I did. I told her to leave," I said.
"Good. Now, let's focus on you. How can I help you calm down?" Jefferson asked.
"Just talking to you helps," I admitted.
"We'll get through this together, Gabriel," Jefferson promised. "You're not alone."
As I spoke with Jefferson, my racing thoughts began to slow. My anger and frustration ebbed, replaced by a sense of calm determination.
"You know, Jefferson, I realized something," I said.
"What's that?" Jefferson asked.
"I deserve better. I deserve someone who respects me, someone who doesn't betray my trust."
"Absolutely," Jefferson agreed. "You deserve someone who loves and appreciates you for who you are."
I nodded, even though Jefferson couldn't see me.
"Thanks, Jefferson," I said, feeling grateful.
"Anytime, Gabriel. Take care of yourself," Jefferson replied.
With a newfound sense of resolve, I hung up the phone and began to plan my next steps.
I would protect myself.
I would heal.
And I would move on.
Without Rachel.
The calm that settled over me was fragile, but it was a start.
