CHAPTER 52
RENZO’S POV
Fueled by anger and betrayal, I slammed my fist against the desk, sending a nearby vase crashing to the floor. The shattering sound echoed in the room, a reflection of the turmoil tearing through me. I yanked at my hair, feeling the sting of frustration and disbelief.
Why did Sam do this to me? The questions swirled in my mind, relentless and unyielding. How could someone I trusted so deeply be a part of something so destructive? The weight of Victoria's accusations pressed heavily on my shoulders, and I couldn't escape the crushing realization that my world was unraveling.
I paced the room, trying to clear my head, but the more I thought about it, the more I felt the ground shifting beneath me. Victoria's words echoed in my ears, the evidence she presented only deepening the chasm of doubt between Sam and me. This was more than just a family feud; it was a matter of trust, loyalty, and the very foundation of my beliefs.
The room felt too small, the walls closing in as I grappled with the betrayal and the potential loss of someone I had come to care about so deeply. My heart pounded in my chest, each beat a reminder of the chaos that had engulfed my life.
I reached for the whiskey bottle, pouring a generous amount into a small glass. The amber liquid swirled as I lifted it to my lips, the warmth of the alcohol a fleeting comfort against the pain gnawing at my insides. I took a deep gulp, feeling the burn as it slid down my throat, hoping it might numb the chaos inside me, even just for a moment.
As I set the glass down, I rubbed my forehead, trying to alleviate the pounding ache that had taken root. The conflict within me was unbearable—my love for Victoria as my sister, and my deep feelings for Sam, were locked in a brutal tug-of-war. How could I reconcile the fact that Sam’s father was the same man who had tried to kill Victoria? The very idea was enough to make my head spin.
The room was spinning with my thoughts, the evidence and accusations swirling like the whiskey in my glass. Victoria’s betrayal cut deep, but the idea of turning against Sam was even more excruciating.
I sat heavily on the edge of the desk, my gaze fixed on the remnants of the broken vase. It was a symbol of how fragile everything had become—relationships shattered and trust broken.
How could I choose between family and love? Victoria was my blood, but Sam had become a significant part of my life. The truth of Sam’s father’s actions was a cruel twist of fate, and the weight of it was almost too much to bear. I knew I needed to make a decision, but the emotional turmoil made it impossible to see a clear path forward.
The whiskey offered no solutions, only a temporary escape from the unbearable reality. As I stared into the glass, I was left with the agonizing realization that the path ahead was fraught with impossible choices and heart-wrenching decisions.
I needed answers—clear, undeniable truths. My mind was a mess, and the only way to find some clarity was to confront Sam directly. No more doubts, no more assumptions. I had to know the truth from her.
Despite the whiskey clouding my senses, I grabbed my keys and headed for the door, determined to go to Sam’s condo. The alcohol was already starting to take effect, dulling my thoughts and making my body feel heavy, but I didn’t care. The need to confront Sam overpowered everything else.
As I slid into the driver’s seat, I could feel the weight of my emotions pressing down on me. I gripped the steering wheel tightly, trying to steady myself as I pulled out of the parking lot. The streets were a blur of headlights and neon signs, but I focused on the road ahead, pushing through the haze.
Every second felt like an eternity, my mind racing with questions. Had Sam known all along about her father’s involvement in what happened to Victoria? Or was she just as blindsided as I was? The thought of her hiding something this big from me twisted my gut, but I couldn’t make a decision until I heard her side.
Finally, I pulled up outside her condo building, the familiar sight of it somehow both comforting and terrifying. I killed the engine and sat there for a moment, breathing deeply, trying to calm the storm inside me.
I needed answers, but more than that, I needed to know if I could still trust Sam.
The second she opened the door, Sam greeted me with a bright smile, her voice light and welcoming. "Renzo, it’s still early, I thought you’d come later—"
I didn’t let her finish. My frustration boiled over, and before I could stop myself, I grabbed her arm and pulled her into the condo. Seeing her cheerful face only made me angrier. How could she smile as if nothing was wrong? My grip tightened around her arm as I dragged her inside, shutting the door behind us.
"Renzo, what’s wrong? You’re hurting me," Sam winced, trying to pull her arm free from my grasp. Her eyes were wide with confusion and fear, but I couldn’t stop the anger flooding my chest. I loosened my grip slightly, but I didn’t let go.
“I need answers, Sam,” I growled, unable to hold back the frustration boiling inside me. "Tell me the truth, who are you really?"
I saw her shock when I asked her that, and she avoided my gaze. “W-what are you talking about, Renzo?”
“What’s the truth? I’ve found out everything, Sam. All the things shit you’ve been hiding, all the lies about your family... your father. Is it true? Is he the one who shot Victoria?"
Sam’s face paled, and for a moment, she didn’t say anything. Her silence felt like a punch to the gut. I couldn’t tell if it was guilt, shock, or something else entirely, but it was enough to make my head spin. She stood there, frozen, the color draining from her face. I could see the panic building in her eyes, and it made my heart twist in agony.
“Renzo, what are you—” she finally began, her voice cracking as she spoke.
I cut her off, my heart racing. “Don’t lie to me, Sam!” I shouted, my voice louder than I intended. “Tell me the truth. Were you hiding this from me? Were you playing me this whole time?”
“Sam, my sister almost died because of this! And you—you kept this from me the whole time? How could you?”
Tears welled up in her eyes as she struggled to find the words. I could see the pain, the guilt, but I was too consumed by my own feelings to process it properly. I wanted answers, and I wanted them now.
"Renzo," she said quietly, her voice shaking, "I didn’t know... I swear, I had no idea about what happened to Victoria."
I wanted to believe her. God, I wanted to believe her. But Victoria’s words were still fresh in my mind, and I couldn’t ignore the gnawing feeling of betrayal eating away at me.
Because she refused to tell the truth, I grabbed the evidence Victoria had given me earlier and threw it at her. Sam’s face paled further as I hurled the folder at her. The papers scattered across the floor, and she looked down at them in shock, her breath hitching.
“There,” I said, my voice cold. “All the evidence Victoria gave me. She says your family’s involved, that your father tried to kill her. You can’t lie your way out of this, Sam.”
She knelt down, hands trembling as she reached for the papers. Her tears began to fall, but I didn’t move. I couldn’t. I was too angry, too hurt to comfort her.
“Renzo…” Her voice cracked as she tried to speak. “I never knew about this… I never wanted this.”
“You didn’t know?” I snapped, stepping closer, my anger bubbling over again. “How could you not know, Sam? Your father nearly killed my sister! And you just stood there, keeping it from me this entire time.”
“I didn’t want to lose you,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “I was afraid that if you knew… you’d leave me.”
I clenched my fists, trying to control the storm raging inside me. "So you're telling me all of this is true? Do you even understand what you’ve done? You let me fall in love with you, knowing this secret could destroy everything."
Sam swallowed hard, stepping back slightly. “Renzo... I didn’t know how to tell you. I— I never wanted you to find out this way.”
“That’s not good enough,” I snapped, letting go of her arm. My hand trembled as I ran it through my hair, trying to regain some sense of control. “I trusted you, Sam. I loved you. But now... I don’t know what to believe.”
Her tears spilled over, her hands reaching out to me, but I stepped back, shaking my head. The hurt, the confusion, the betrayal—it was all too much.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. But right now, her apology felt like a hollow echo.
I stared at her, trying to make sense of the emotions swirling around inside me. Was she telling the truth? Or was she just trying to protect herself?
She rose to her feet, the papers still clutched in her hand, her tears falling freely now. “Renzo, please… I love you. I didn’t know how to tell you. I was scared.”
Her words hit me hard, but the trust we once had felt shattered beyond repair. I wanted to believe her—part of me still did—but the betrayal was too deep, the weight of Victoria’s accusations too heavy to ignore.
“I can’t…” I shook my head, taking a step back from her. “I can’t do this right now, Sam. I need time to think.”
Sam’s voice cracked with emotion as she spoke, her tears flowing freely now. “You said you loved me? I didn’t tell you everything because... I remembered all the pain, all the stories I told you—about losing my dad, about my family.” Her words came out in broken fragments, filled with pain.
I paused at the door, my hand still gripping the handle. Hearing her so vulnerable, so raw, made my chest tighten. Every part of me wanted to turn around and hold her, to comfort her like I always had. But the weight of what she kept from me, the lies, the secrets—it was too much.
“You think I don’t understand your pain, Sam?” I asked, my voice low but steady. “I lost my sister once… almost lost her again because of your family. And you stood there, letting me believe you were different.”
“Renzo, please,” she cried out, stepping closer. “It wasn’t supposed to be like this. I didn’t want you to hate me. I never wanted any of this to happen.”
I turned around, my eyes locking onto hers, filled with desperation and sorrow. For a brief moment, the love I had for her flickered in my chest. But the hurt, the betrayal, it was stronger.
“I don’t hate you, Sam,” I said quietly, the words heavy on my tongue. “But I don’t know if I can trust you anymore.”
She shook her head, her tears falling faster. “We can work through this, Renzo. Please, don’t give up on us.”
But the truth was, I didn’t know if there was still an “us” to save.
“I need time,” I whispered, turning away from her again. “I need to figure out what’s real and what’s not.”
But I couldn’t stay. Not after everything that had been revealed. Without another word, I turned and walked out of the condo, the sound of Sam’s sobs echoing behind me as I closed the door. My heart ached with every step I took away from her, but for the first time, I wasn’t sure if I’d ever be able to come back.Download Novelah App
