Chapter 69: Struggles in the Sands

"Is it possible to feel like you’re sinking even when you’re standing still?"
Aria’s voice was muffled beneath the layers of her scarf as she stared out across the vast expanse of desert before them. The wind had picked up, carrying with it a fine spray of sand that stung her skin. The world around them had become a swirling mass of golden dust, the horizon lost in the endless sea of dunes.
Liam, walking a few steps ahead, glanced back at her, his eyes narrowed against the wind. "If it’s not sand pulling you down, it’s the heat," he said with a wry smile. "Or maybe just the fact that we’ve been walking for hours and it feels like we haven’t moved at all."
Aria sighed, adjusting her scarf to shield her face from the biting gusts. "It’s like the desert’s testing us. Every step feels harder than the last."
Liam slowed his pace, falling in step beside her. "That’s because it is. We’re not just fighting the distance. We’re fighting this heat, this sandstorm. Everything’s working against us."
For a moment, they trudged forward in silence, their footsteps slow and heavy in the shifting sand. The sun beat down relentlessly, and even though the wind offered some relief from the heat, it was still oppressive. The constant battle against the elements was wearing them down, both physically and mentally.
Aria glanced at Liam, noting the strain etched on his face. His normally easygoing demeanor was shadowed by exhaustion, and she could feel it, too—the weight of this journey bearing down on them both. But even as she felt the pressure, there was a stubborn fire inside her that refused to let go.
"We’ve faced worse, haven’t we?" she asked, trying to inject a note of lightness into her voice.
Liam huffed a laugh, though it lacked its usual warmth. "You mean the collapsing temples, rogue magic, and cursed artifacts? Yeah, I guess we’ve had some fun."
Aria smiled faintly, but the truth was that this journey had been pushing them to their limits. Every new challenge felt heavier, more difficult, as if the desert itself was testing not just their physical endurance but their willpower.
"Do you think it’s supposed to be this hard?" she asked, her voice quieter now, more introspective. "Like… is this another test? Not just for the compass, but for us?"
Liam didn’t answer right away. He wiped the sweat from his brow and stared ahead, his brow furrowed in thought. "I think every step we take is a test, Aria. Whether it’s the compass or this desert or whatever we’re facing next… it’s all testing us. But I don’t think it’s about whether we pass or fail. It’s about whether we keep going, no matter what."
Aria nodded, his words settling into her chest like a quiet resolve. That was the thing, wasn’t it? The journey didn’t stop when things got tough. The real test was whether they had the strength to keep going, even when it felt like the whole world was against them.
"Then we keep going," she said softly. "No matter what."
Liam gave her a sidelong glance, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "That’s the Aria I know. I was starting to wonder if the desert had broken your spirit."
Aria laughed, though it was more out of determination than humor. "Not yet. Though ask me again in a few hours and I might have a different answer."
As they pressed on, the sandstorm began to intensify. The wind howled around them, whipping the sand into their faces and making it nearly impossible to see more than a few feet ahead. Aria tightened her grip on the compass, its needle still pointing resolutely forward, even as the world around them seemed to spin in chaos.
"We need to find shelter," Liam shouted over the roar of the wind. "This storm’s getting worse."
Aria squinted against the stinging sand, scanning the horizon for anything that might offer them cover. But all she could see were dunes upon dunes, shifting and swirling under the relentless wind. Her heart sank as the realization hit her—they were completely exposed out here, with no sign of refuge in sight.
Liam tugged on her arm, pulling her closer so she could hear him better. "We can’t keep walking in this! We’ll lose each other if it gets any worse!"
Aria nodded, her throat tightening with frustration. She knew he was right. The storm was too strong, too dangerous. But stopping here, in the middle of the desert with no shelter, felt like giving in. Still, they had no choice.
"Let’s dig in!" she shouted, motioning toward a large dune nearby. "We can use it to shield ourselves until the storm passes!"
Liam didn’t hesitate. Together, they scrambled up the side of the dune, the sand slipping under their feet, making every step a struggle. When they reached the top, they dropped to their knees and began digging, carving out a small trench that they could huddle in for protection.
It wasn’t much, but it would have to do.
As the storm raged on, Aria and Liam crouched in the shallow trench, their backs pressed against the sand as the wind howled overhead. The storm was deafening, the sound of the wind like a living thing, growling and snarling as it tore through the desert. Every now and then, Aria would peek over the edge of the dune, only to be met with a wall of sand and dust, the world beyond lost in the storm’s fury.
"How long do you think it’ll last?" Liam asked, his voice barely audible over the wind.
Aria shook her head. "Could be hours. Could be days. We just have to wait it out."
Liam let out a sigh, leaning his head back against the sand. "Great. More waiting. My favorite."
Aria smiled despite the situation. "You’re doing fine, Liam. This is nothing compared to what we’ve been through."
He shot her a sideways glance, a playful smirk on his lips. "You’re right. This is a vacation compared to rogue mages and cursed temples."
They fell into a companionable silence after that, both of them huddling together for warmth and protection as the storm raged on. The minutes stretched into what felt like hours, and the constant roar of the wind became a background noise, a reminder of the unforgiving world they had ventured into.
Aria found herself lost in thought, her mind drifting to the compass. She could feel its steady pulse against her chest, its warmth a comforting presence even in the midst of the storm. It hadn’t failed her yet. Every time she’d doubted it, the compass had led her to the right place, guided her through impossible situations. And now, more than ever, she felt connected to its history, its purpose.
But there was something more—something she hadn’t fully grasped until now.
"The compass isn’t just about finding a destination," she said suddenly, her voice quiet but filled with clarity.
Liam turned to her, his brow furrowed. "What do you mean?"
Aria hesitated, her fingers brushing against the compass’s cool surface. "It’s about understanding the journey. Every challenge we’ve faced, every step we’ve taken—it’s all been part of the same thing. The compass doesn’t just lead us to a place. It’s teaching us how to survive. How to trust ourselves."
Liam stared at her for a moment, the weight of her words sinking in. "So it’s not about the end. It’s about the process."
Aria nodded, her voice soft. "Exactly. The desert, the storm, everything—it’s part of the test. It’s not just testing our strength. It’s testing our resilience. How we handle the struggle."
Liam let out a low breath, a small smile tugging at his lips. "I should’ve known you’d find a deeper meaning in all this sand."
Aria laughed, the sound light and genuine. "Well, we’ve got nothing but time to think out here."
Liam shook his head, his smile fading slightly as he looked out at the storm still raging around them. "But you’re right. It’s about how we keep going. Even when it feels impossible."
Aria reached for his hand, her grip firm and steady. "We’ve come this far. We’re not giving up now."
Liam squeezed her hand in return, his voice filled with quiet determination. "No. We’re not."
