Kriiiingg! The bell rang loudly, signaling the end of the library period. Students quickly packed up their things, and the low murmur of chatter filled the quiet space. Lucretia stood, stretching her legs before heading to the librarian’s desk. "Can I borrow this book, please?" she asked with a polite smile as she approached Mrs. Nightingale, who sat behind the polished wooden counter surrounded by towering stacks of books. Mrs. Nightingale adjusted her glasses and returned Lucretia’s smile warmly. "Of course. Just sign it out here." She slid the records book across the counter. Lucretia took the pen and carefully wrote her details in the logbook. "Thank you, Mrs. Nightingale," she said, handing it back. "You're welcome, dear. Remember, it’s due in two weeks!" Mrs. Nightingale called after her as Lucretia turned to rejoin her friends. Lucretia hurried over to the table where Mimie and Crystal were waiting, waving her newly borrowed book. "Alright, let's go," she said, tucking it safely into her bag. They left the library, their laughter echoing down the corridor as they headed back to their classroom. The corridor was lined with lockers and decorated with student posters for upcoming events. Halfway to class, they suddenly spotted Daisy and her friends approaching, their expressions as icy as the fluorescent lights above them. "Well, well," Crystal muttered under her breath, rolling her eyes. "Just the person we were hoping not to see." Daisy sneered, her friends standing close behind her like bodyguards. "Don’t pretend, Lucretia," she said smugly, her voice laced with a challenging tone. Mimie stepped forward, crossing her arms defensively. "Cut it out, Daisy. Everyone knows Lucretia and Philip are close friends—since forever." Daisy’s eyes narrowed, her hand twitching slightly. But as she raised it, Lucretia caught her wrist firmly. “Oh no, you don’t,” Lucretia said, her voice calm but forceful. She leaned in, her tone dropping to a barely audible whisper. "Just so you know, I’m Philip’s best friend, and I know him better than you ever will. And let’s just say, he’s not a fan of… certain attitudes.” Lucretia released Daisy’s wrist and strolled away with her friends, leaving Daisy fuming in the hallway, her face flushed with anger. "I’ll get you back for this, Lucretia," Daisy muttered, her friends murmuring reassurances beside her. --- Back in class, Lucretia entered and noticed Jayden waving her over with a friendly grin. She smiled and started toward him, unaware of Philip watching her from his seat, his expression unreadable. "What the heck?" Philip mumbled under his breath. “What’s gotten into her?” Mike nudged him, noticing his reaction. “Chill out, Philip. Looks like your best friend’s just making new friends,” he said with a smirk. --- The hours ticked by until, finally, the dismissal bell echoed through the school. Students eagerly packed their bags as Mrs. Lily wrapped up her instructions. “Read pages 101 to 103 and complete the assignments for tomorrow,” she reminded the class before stepping out. Lucretia turned to Mimie and Crystal. "Are you two coming with me?" she asked, gathering her things. “Actually, we were thinking you might have different company today,” Crystal replied, wiggling her eyebrows suggestively and gesturing behind Lucretia. Lucretia turned around, surprised to see Philip standing in front of her. "Oh, Phil! What’s up?" He leaned in, his face mere inches from hers. “What? Can’t I walk home with my best friend anymore?” he teased, wiggling his eyebrows. She looked into his bright eyes, feeling her heart race. What is he doing? she thought, wondering if he could hear her pounding heartbeat. Philip reached over and ruffled her hair, breaking her reverie. “Um…?" she mumbled, blinking up at him. He chuckled. “What, no response?” he teased. Lucretia smirked, gently pushing him away. “Go away, you dork.” Philip laughed, but his smile faded slightly when she asked, “So… what about your sweet Daisy?” His expression shifted. “Uh… she had somewhere to be,” he replied, glancing away. A sarcastic voice interrupted them from behind. “No, actually, I didn’t.” They both turned to see Daisy standing there, arms crossed, looking less than pleased. Philip tried to mask his surprise and quickly grabbed Daisy’s hand. “Right… let’s go, Daisy,” he said hastily, tugging her along as they walked away. Lucretia watched them leave, her smile fading as they disappeared down the hallway. “Are you okay?” Jayden’s voice brought her back to the present. He was watching her with a look of concern. Lucretia forced a smile. “Yeah, I’m fine. Let’s head out before we miss the bus.” They made their way to the bus stop, sharing a light-hearted conversation as they waited. Philip watched from inside Daisy’s car nearby, his gaze lingering on Lucretia and Jayden as they boarded the bus together, a slight frown on his face. --- The bus ride was mostly quiet, with the afternoon sun casting a warm glow over the passengers. When the bus reached Jayden’s stop, Lucretia expected him to get off. But to her surprise, he stayed in his seat. “Jayden? Isn’t this your stop?” she asked, raising an eyebrow. Jayden shrugged with a small smile. “I thought I’d take you home this time.” “But it’s a forty-minute ride from here,” Lucretia replied, eyeing him skeptically. “Doesn’t bother me,” he replied. “Besides, last time I didn’t get to see you home.” She looked at him, unsure, but eventually shrugged. “Alright, suit yourself.” The ride passed quickly as they chatted and laughed together. When they finally arrived at Lucretia’s stop, they got off and strolled down the quiet street lined with trees and rows of quaint houses. Lucretia’s home came into view, a warm and welcoming two-story house with a tidy front garden. “Thanks for bringing me home,” she said, smiling. Jayden smiled back. “Nice place. I’ll see you tomorrow, then?” “Are you sure you don’t want to come in?” she asked, glancing toward her door. “Nah, I’d better get back. My mom just texted me.” She nodded. “Alright. Thanks again, Jayden!” He waved, heading down the street as she went inside. “Lucretia, is that you?” Her mom’s voice called from the living room, where she was sipping tea on the cozy couch. “Yes, Mom!” Lucretia replied, joining her. “Good afternoon.” She flopped onto the sofa beside her. “Good news, darling! Guess who’s coming to visit this summer?” “Who?” Lucretia asked, her eyes lighting up with excitement. “Your cousins, Lindsay and Anita! They’ll be staying with us!” “Really?” Lucretia’s face broke into a wide smile. She jumped up in excitement. “That’s awesome!” “I thought you’d be happy,” Mrs. Angelica chuckled. “Just be careful on the stairs!” she called as Lucretia dashed off to her room, already buzzing with excitement.
