Chapter 3: The Wish

Chapter 3: The Wish
The transition into high school brought new challenges for Luke and Nova, but some things remained the same. The bullying continued, though Luke's growing confidence—thanks to Nova's constant support—had made it a little more bearable. Nova's presence in his life was a constant source of strength and comfort. She was his protector, his best friend, and the girl he secretly loved.
One crisp autumn afternoon, Luke and Nova were walking home from school, discussing their latest assignments. Nova, always full of energy and enthusiasm, was recounting a particularly funny incident from her biology class.
"And then the frog jumped out of the container and landed right on Mr. Stevenson's head!" Nova laughed, her eyes sparkling with mirth.
Luke chuckled, though his heart wasn't fully in it. He was distracted by the thought of how to finally tell Nova how he felt. As they rounded a corner, a group of notorious teenagers from a nearby high school blocked their path. Luke recognized them immediatel the gang led by Marcus, a hulking figure known for his violent tendencies.
"Well, well, look who we have here," Marcus sneered, cracking his knuckles.
"It's little Lukey and his bodyguard."
Nova stepped forward, her expression fierce. "Get out of our way, Marcus. We don't want any trouble."
Marcus laughed, a cruel sound that sent shivers down Luke's spine.
"Too bad. I do."
Without warning, Marcus lunged at Luke, sending him sprawling to the ground. Nova reacted instantly, launching herself at Marcus with a series of well-placed punches and kicks. She was fierce and determined, but the numbers were against her. The gang swarmed, and despite her best efforts, Nova was soon overpowered.
Luke struggled to his feet, his heart pounding in his chest.
"Nova, no!"
He tried to reach her, but Marcus's gang members held him back, delivering blow after blow. Pain radiated through his body, but all he could think about was Nova—how she was fighting for him, how he wished he could be as strong as her.
Finally, the sound of distant sirens reached their ears. The gang hesitated, then scattered, leaving Luke and Nova beaten and bloodied on the ground. Luke crawled to Nova's side, his vision blurred by tears. She was unconscious, her face bruised and swollen.
"Nova," he whispered, his voice choked with emotion.
"Please wake up."
He cradled her in his arms, tears streaming down his face. In that moment of desperation, he wished with all his heart to take her pain away.
"I wish I could take it all, Nova. All your pain, all your injuries. I wish I could take it all."
As his tears fell onto her wounded face, a strange light enveloped them. Luke blinked, trying to understand what was happening. He felt a strange sensation, a warmth spreading through his body. When the light faded, he looked down at Nova—and saw that her injuries were gone.
Luke's relief was short-lived as a searing pain coursed through his body. He gasped, realizing that all of Nova's wounds had transferred to him. He collapsed beside her, the agony almost unbearable.
A few moments later, Nova stirred and opened her eyes.
"Luke?" she whispered, her voice weak.
Luke forced a smile, despite the pain.
"Hey, Nova."
Nova's eyes widened as she took in his injuries.
"What happened? You... you're hurt!"
Luke coughed, wincing at the sharp pain in his ribs.
"It's okay. You're safe. That's all that matters."
"No, Luke!" Nova cried, tears streaming down her face.
"This isn't right! How did this happen?"
Luke's vision began to blur as darkness crept in.
"I... I made a wish. I wanted to take your pain away. And... it came true."
Nova's heart ached at his words.
"You shouldn't have done that, Luke. I can't bear to see you hurt."
Luke's consciousness faded, and the last thing he heard was Nova's voice calling his name.
When Luke awoke, he was in a hospital bed, his body wrapped in bandages. His parents were beside him, their faces etched with worry.
"Mom? Dad?" he croaked, his throat dry.
"Oh, Luke," his mother said, tears streaming down her face.
"We were so worried."
His father squeezed his hand.
"You're going to be okay, son. The doctors say you'll recover, but you need to rest."
Luke nodded weakly, his thoughts immediately turning to Nova.
"Where's Nova?"
His mother glanced towards the door.
"She's here. She hasn't left your side."
Nova stepped into the room, her eyes red from crying. She rushed to Luke's side, her expression a mix of relief and anger.
"Luke, why did you do it? Why did you wish for my injuries to be transferred to you?"
Luke took a deep breath, wincing at the pain. "I couldn't stand seeing you hurt, Nova. You've always protected me, and I wanted to protect you for once."
Nova's eyes softened, but her anger remained.
"But now you're the one suffering. It's not fair, Luke."
"I don't care," Luke said firmly.
"As long as you're okay, it's worth it."
Nova's resolve crumbled, and she burst into tears.
"I can't lose you, Luke. You're my best friend."
Luke reached out and took her hand, squeezing it gently. "You won't lose me, Nova. We'll figure this out together."
Nova nodded, wiping her tears away. "We will. I promise."
The next few days were a blur of pain and recovery for Luke. Nova stayed by his side, refusing to leave him alone. She was determined to find a way to help him, but for now, all they could do was wait and hope.
One evening, as Luke lay in his hospital bed, Nova sat beside him, holding his hand. "Luke, I've been thinking. Maybe there's something we can do to find a solution. I don't know what yet, but we'll keep looking."
Luke looked at her, his eyes filled with hope. "Do you really think so?"
Nova nodded. "I do. And I'm going to do everything I can to help you. I promise."
Luke smiled weakly. "I believe in you, Nova. If anyone can figure this out, it's you."
As the days turned into weeks, Luke slowly recovered from his injuries. Nova was true to her word, supporting him every step of the way. She was relentless in her pursuit, driven by her determination to find a way to help Luke.
One afternoon, Nova burst into Luke's room, a look of excitement on her face. "Luke, I think I found something. There's a story about a wish being reversed by a selfless act. It might be a long shot, but it’s something to go on."
Luke's eyes widened. "Where did you hear about it?"
Nova took a deep breath. "It was in an old book I found in the library. It’s a legend, but it’s worth a try."
Luke's heart swelled with admiration for Nova. "You're amazing, Nova. I don't know what I'd do without you."
Nova smiled, her eyes shining with determination. "You won't have to find out. We're in this together, Luke. Always."
Their friendship had been forged in the fires of adversity, and Luke knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, they would face them together. Nova had always been his protector, and now it was his turn to protect her. With their hearts united by a shared purpose, they continued to search for answers, their bond unbreakable.
