Chapter 76

Brian’s words felt like an invisible thread trying to pull Mia back. What other option was there? If she didn’t divorce him, she might not even be able to keep her own life, let alone the child she carried. She didn’t want her baby to always be at risk, so as a mother, she had to protect her child with all her strength.
Mia’s hands clenched tightly. Her chest tightened as if someone was squeezing it tightly. She lowered her head and shook it gently. Her eyes were resolute yet incredibly weak.
“Brian… do you remember our agreement?”
Brian bit his lip and reluctantly spoke two difficult words, “I remember…”
At that moment, Mia forced a faint, sorrowful smile, full of melancholy and resignation.
“Now… I am here to fulfill that agreement… Let’s… get a divorce.”
As she spoke, Mia’s throat tightened, and she exhaled deeply, her gaze drifting away. She feared that if she looked any longer, she might lose her resolve.
Brian’s hands clenched tightly, and his eyes seemed increasingly confused, as if they were unable to convey his feelings. He stared blankly at the divorce papers on the table, unable to say a word, while Mia also stayed silent.
Why could he accept the divorce so easily? Although there was an agreement between them that no one should hold on to the relationship, he could have broken his promise. After all, he was the one who made the agreement and could certainly bend the rules.
But seeing Mia’s firm attitude, Brian genuinely didn’t know what to do.
Suddenly, he muttered, “Do we really have to divorce, Mia? I know you don’t want to.”
She blinked slowly, trying to hold back tears. She had to be steadfast—for her child, for a peaceful life ahead. Sacrificing a little was not wrong. Besides, she was the one who had intruded into their relationship a year ago.
If there was blame, it could only be directed at fate for being so cruel.
Mia took a deep breath, trying to control her emotions and force herself to be more resolute. She looked at him, her deep, dark eyes seemingly trying to absorb and contain her feelings.
“You’re wrong… I… want a divorce… I’ve thought it through… A year is enough. What doesn’t belong to me is better off…”
“No, I don’t believe it.”
Before Mia could finish, Brian cut her off, standing up and walking towards her. She instinctively took a few steps back, as if wanting to avoid facing him.
But before she could turn away, Brian’s hands grasped hers, holding her firmly.
In his eyes, she could see a mix of panic and doubt. If she were in his place, she would feel the same. Brian’s breath was heavy and labored. He knew Mia had feelings for him, so why did they have to divorce in the end? This made him feel deeply unsettled.
Brian shook his head frantically, his eyes showing the devastation within. He was deeply moved, quickly shaking her shoulders.
“Why? Why? You’re lying… I know you love me too!”
He spoke with fear, and Mia kept her head down, her clear eyes now clouded with distress, making her emotions hard to describe.
Brian’s lips tightened, his hands shaking as he continued to shake her shoulders, desperately seeking an answer. If she didn’t speak up, he might keep shaking her until he went mad.
In the end, Mia gathered all her courage and pushed his hands away from her shoulders. Did he need a reason? Should she say that she was pregnant with their child? Diana’s intentions were clear, and Mia knew she couldn’t stay any longer. Definitely not.
Mia exhaled deeply, unable to provide a satisfactory reason for him. Her forehead furrowed, her breathing heavy as if it was becoming difficult to breathe.
“Let’s get a divorce.”
She repeated her original intention, her voice sharp. Brian’s eyebrows were furrowed, never once easing his gaze from her.
“No.”
He spoke flatly, his eyes hardening quickly.
“If you won’t give a reason, I won’t sign…”
Mia was left speechless. Did divorce need a reason? Brian had insisted on knowing everything, and now Mia didn’t know what to do.
She instinctively took a few steps back, her lips twitching as if about to speak, but her words were silenced by Diana’s harsh voice.
“Divorce? Ha, I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time… Mia, you’ve finally come to your senses…”
Diana walked into the kitchen, her alluring figure and heavily made-up face making her presence known. She crossed her arms and smirked triumphantly. Yes, Diana had been waiting for this day—the day when Brian and Mia would divorce, and she would reclaim her position as the rightful wife.
Brian shot Diana a look of disgust. She noticed his attitude towards her but merely shrugged it off.
Diana’s urging voice cut through the tension once more.
“What are you waiting for? Hurry up and sign. Remember… the promises you made… and also… you should think about the kid. I already warned you.”
Diana smirked coldly.
Brian’s hands tightened even more. The room fell into silence.
Diana waited eagerly for every moment Brian would sign the divorce papers. Seeing him still standing there, she grew impatient and spoke quickly.
“Do you want to choose for her? Ha… Or Mia, or Cyrus Leonard, you choose… Surely you don’t want your son to be without a father… or a mother… or both…”
Diana’s words were like a knife stabbing him straight to the heart. One was his wife, and the other was his son. Their positions seemed balanced; losing either would make him deeply unsettled.
Mia, still silent, managed to force a heavy, strained smile. She spoke gently to Brian.
“Cyrus… cannot be without a father, and he cannot be without a mother… You’re already a father. You have a child… you can’t escape your promises and responsibilities.”
“Mia… if you can think that way… then why don’t you think that I can’t live without you?!”
Mia’s teeth clenched in confusion. She had considered it, but the circumstances had driven her to the point of divorce. Fate had always been unfair—giving something and then taking it all away was truly unjust.
Mia lowered her head, forcing herself to say a heartbreaking line.
“We’re out of luck. I… should return you to your regular life…”
As soon as Mia finished speaking, Diana couldn’t hold back and added a final push.
“Sign the papers quickly. If you don’t, I’ll take Cyrus and leave the city, making sure you can never find him…”
At this point, Brian’s hands tightened even more. His heart was tangled in a mess of confusion, standing at the crossroads of choice… Did he really have to let Mia go? She was his wife!
